BGS socket set: buy the drive and the size list

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have two amazon.co.uk tabs open, both called a BGS socket set, and the bigger piece count looks like the safer spend. A 192-piece case, an 11-piece rail and a cabinet tray can share that name and still differ in drive, opening, and whether a ratchet is included. This guide uses the eleven chrome vanadium listings we compared, plus public UK guides, and it is not a lab test. Figures below are the raw snapshot unless a later shelf price is named. The full table stays on the [BGS socket set comparison](/hub/hand-tools/bgs-socket-set). A qualifying purchase through our links can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Case, tray or rail

BGS 2292 and BGS 2243 are 192-piece cases with three drives. Raw prices were £67.06 and £53.88. On 20 October 2026 the 2292 showed £104.81, so check the live price. Both weigh about 8.8 kg, and 2292 includes 72-tooth ratchets. 9106, 2226, 9107, 2267, 9105, 2755, 2433 and 1105 are rails without a ratchet. Under about £15, 9106 was £12.90 and the 3/8 inch 9105 was £12.70. BGS 4036 is a tray, 567 × 408 × 48 mm, at £188.51, with no UK review text. If the ratchet is already yours, the best BGS socket set page is the shorter route.

Opening and the size list

Drive size is the square on the ratchet. Socket size is the millimetre across the nut. The RS guide puts 1/2 inch sets roughly in an 8–32 mm band, as a rule of thumb. BGS 2267 at £27.33 runs to 36 mm and has no ratchet. 2292 is a Super Lock wave profile. 2243 and 9106 are hexagon. 2226, 2267, 9105 and 9107 are 12-point. We do not claim Super Lock cannot round a fastener. Openings are compared on BGS Super Lock or hexagon. 9106 and 9107 are labelled 10–21 mm and both skip 20 mm. 2226 at £18.14 includes 20 mm. A 192-piece headline is not every deep socket to 32 mm.

Steel, origin and impact

Every listing we kept says chrome vanadium. None says chrome molybdenum, and none cites an impact standard. Toolstation’s guide keeps a standard socket off an impact wrench. The listings do not claim BS ISO 1711-1:2019 or BS ISO 1711-2:2019. 2292 and 2243 say Germany. The rails and the 4036 tray say China. 1105 says Taiwan. A Germany mark on the cases does not apply to a £12 rail. If a wheel or hub nut will not move and the car has to be driven, that is a garage job. At work, PUWER duties sit with the employer.

What to skip

BGS 1105 at £31.76 is slotted for sensors and bent pipes, not a first set of ordinary nuts. 2433 at £5.13 and 2755 at £15.19 are inch rails. The 2755 title says 12 pieces while the bullet names eleven and omits 1/2 inch. A £12.90 rail can beat a 192-piece case when you already own the ratchet and 20 mm is on the list. It fails when the nut is 20 mm and the rail is 9106 or 9107. Wheels and brakes are on BGS socket set for car repairs.

Common questions

Is a 192-piece BGS set the one to buy if I have no tools?
If you own no ratchet and you want 1/4 inch, 3/8 inch and 1/2 inch in one box, 2292 or 2243 matches that job better than a bare rail. Raw prices were £53.88 and £67.06, and 2292 showed £104.81 on 20 October 2026. Skip the case when you already own the only drive you use. Those 192 pieces do not add up to every deep socket up to 32 mm.
What is the difference between BGS 2292 and BGS 2243?
Both are 192-piece cases with three drives. 2292 is Super Lock, a wave profile, with 72-tooth ratchets in the manufacturer description. 2243 is hexagon Pro Torque, at £53.88 against £67.06 in the saved listing, and both showed 4.6 stars. The openings differ. Choose between them on the Super Lock versus hexagon page.
Do the cheap BGS rails include a ratchet?
They do not. 9106, 2226, 9107, 2267, 9105, 2755, 2433 and 1105 are sockets without a handle. £12.90 for 9106 makes sense when a 1/2 inch ratchet is already yours. If you still need the handle, compare that pair of prices with a cased kit. The rail is the lighter buy for one size band, against a case of about 8.8 kg.
Why does a 10–21 mm BGS rail skip 20 mm?
9106 at £12.90 and 9107 at £20.73 are titled 10–21 mm and both omit 20 mm. The title prints the ends of the range, not every step between them. 2226 at £18.14 covers 8–24 mm and includes 20 mm. If that size is the nut you expect, buy the rail that lists it. The cheaper 11-piece rail leaves you one fastener short.
Are these BGS sockets for an impact wrench?
They are chrome vanadium hand sockets. None is described as chrome molybdenum, and none cites BS ISO 1711-2 for impact use. Toolstation’s guide keeps a standard socket off an impact wrench. A product-question reply does not change the steel. If the nut will not move and the car must be driven, use an impact-rated socket or a garage.
Is every BGS socket set made in Germany?
Only 2292 and 2243 say Germany in this sample. The rails and the 4036 tray say China, and 1105 says Taiwan. Read the origin on the amazon.co.uk listing, because the brand does not copy the case’s country onto a rail. A China-made rail can still be the size list you need.
