Match the 1/2 inch square first

The 1/2 inch figure is the square on the ratchet, the extension and the back of the socket, not the size of the nut. BS ISO 1174-1:2011 covers driving squares on hand socket tools: the square has to match or the socket will not click on. A 3/8 inch ratchet needs an adaptor. WORKPRO at £59.99 has a 1/4 inch and a 1/2 inch 72-tooth ratchet. Hilka at £39.78 is 1/2 inch only. A sockets-only tin leaves you short if the ratchet on the bench is the wrong square.

Read the millimetre list, not the span

Most cars on UK roads use metric fasteners. A span such as 10–24 mm is not every step. KIRXST prints 10, 12, 13, 14, 16, 17, 19, 21, 22 and 24 mm and skips 15 mm and 18 mm. HOYETO prints the same ten sizes. Alitamei includes 15 mm and jumps from 19 mm to 22 mm. Hilka says six-point sockets from 8 mm to 32 mm and does not print every step. Draper’s 12-piece rack set prints no sizes. Bahco’s S240 at Halfords cites ISO 1174, and that set is not in this comparison.

Hand set or impact tin

Toolstation treats chrome vanadium as hand-tool steel, and impact sockets as typically chrome molybdenum. Hilka, the Draper 12-piece, WORKPRO and KATSU’s steel-case set at £17.99 do not claim a gun. Deep tins often say impact while the material line still says chrome vanadium, alloy steel, or, at £9.99, carbon steel. None prints chrome molybdenum. A title is not BS ISO 1711-2. The shatter detail is on impact socket or normal socket.

Case, teeth and standards

Hilka’s plastic case has thin latches. Draper’s 12-piece set is a hanging rack, poor in a boot. WORKPRO’s case is 37 × 8 × 28 cm, and sockets fall out once a screwed sheet is removed. Hilka and WORKPRO state 72 teeth. KATSU’s hand set states 24 teeth and also claims a 5-degree swing, which does not match. None of these ASINs cites BS ISO 1174 or BS ISO 1711. Who the top pick is sits on the best 1/2 inch socket set page.

Common questions

Do I need 1/2 inch or 3/8 inch?
You need 1/2 inch when the square on the tool you will turn is 1/2 inch, which is the usual drive for wheel nuts and suspension bolts. A 3/8 inch set is lighter for smaller engine-bay bolts and will not click into a 1/2 inch socket without an adaptor. If you only own 3/8 inch, either buy a 1/2 inch ratchet in the set or accept the adaptor and the extra length.
Are UK cars metric?
Most fasteners on modern cars in the UK are metric, so a 1/2 inch set for the driveway should be sold in millimetres. The 1/2 inch is the drive square, not an imperial nut. Older British machinery and some bike parts can still be imperial. Hilka has no imperial version in this listing, and a WORKPRO buyer who searched for imperial received the metric kit.
Is a 108-piece set more complete than a 32-piece set?
Not for every job. WORKPRO’s 108 pieces include a 1/4 inch ratchet, a 1/2 inch ratchet and screwdriver bits, and the millimetre list is not printed. Hilka’s 32 pieces are a 1/2 inch hand set from 8 mm to 32 mm with a ratchet. If the missing tool is a 19 mm socket and a 1/2 inch ratchet, the smaller set can be the more complete one. Count openings, not the number on the lid.
What does 10–24 mm leave out?
It can leave out any size the seller did not pack. KIRXST’s deep set skips 15 mm and 18 mm. Alitamei includes 15 mm and skips 21 mm. A reviewer of KATSU’s deep carbon-steel set says 16 mm was not in a 10–24 mm tin. Read the contents line. If the page only prints the span, treat the steps as unknown until you see a photo or the tray.
Do I need a ratchet in the box?
You need a ratchet, or another 1/2 inch driver, somewhere. You do not need a second one if a sound ratchet is already on the bench. Hilka, Draper’s 12-piece, WORKPRO and KATSU’s steel-case set include one. The deep tins and Draper Expert do not. Buying sockets only, then discovering the old ratchet is 3/8 inch, is an extra order and a delay.
Is black paint the same as an impact socket?
No. Black oxide, phosphate and paint are finishes. Impact sockets are defined by the steel and the way they are made for shock, and UK trade guides point to chrome molybdenum rather than a colour. Several black sets in this sample still say chrome vanadium or carbon steel. Use the finish as a clue to look harder, not as proof.
What if the listing does not cite a British Standard?
Then you cannot claim the set meets one. BS ISO 1174 covers the driving square on hand socket tools, and the impact and hand socket specifications are separate British Standards. Bahco’s shop listing cites ISO 1174. These amazon.co.uk ASINs do not. Judge them on the printed sizes, the ratchet, the steel line and the reviews, and do not borrow another brand’s citation.
