Gas BBQ regulator UK: match pressure and connector

Updated: 16 October 2026

A gas BBQ regulator in the UK must match the pressure printed for the appliance and the valve on the cylinder. A part that clips on but supplies the wrong pressure is the wrong part. Many UK patio-gas barbecues use 37 mbar propane and a 27 mm clip-on valve. Butane, red propane and disposable cartridges differ. Read the data plate before ordering. The listings are in the [Taino gas barbecue comparison](/hub/grills-and-barbecues/taino-gas-barbecue). Once the kit is identified, the [how to connect a gas barbecue guide](/hub/grills-and-barbecues/taino-gas-barbecue/sub/taino-gas-barbecue-how-to-connect) covers the leak test and shutdown. The Products Compared editorial team did not fit these regulators.

37 mbar and a 27 mm clip

Green patio gas is propane with a clip-on valve. Calor specifies 37 mbar, a 27 mm clip and an 8 mm hose nozzle for its patio cylinders. Flogas also lists a 27 mm propane clip-on regulator at 37 mbar. Those numbers are more useful than a generic BBQ regulator label. Pressure controls the gas delivered. The clip size decides whether the regulator fits the valve. Both must match. A 37 mbar regulator with the wrong connector is not suitable because it is sold for barbecues, and a 27 mm clip is not enough if the plate specifies another pressure. When an amazon.co.uk listing omits the pressure, ask the seller for the manual. Missing data is a reason to pause.

Butane, red propane and cartridges are different

Butane barbecue setups commonly use 28–30 mbar. Calor identifies a 21 mm clip-on butane connection. That clip does not fit a 27 mm patio-gas valve. Butane also performs less readily in the cold than propane. You still follow the gases approved on the plate. Red propane cylinders commonly use a screw-on regulator. The gas may be propane, and the valve is physically different. Do not bridge that with an unapproved adaptor. Hamilton Gas Products distinguishes 37 mbar patio gas, propane screw connections and 28–30 mbar butane, and notes that UK and Irish connections can differ. The Grill2Go listing specifies a disposable 16.4 ounce liquid-propane cylinder sold separately. Gardeners' World notes an EN417 bottle unless a specialised regulator is added. Calor's help article treats Campingaz as a different 29 mbar regulator in that context. None of those is the patio-gas clip above.

Which products already list a hose?

The Compact includes a propane regulator and hose and does not state the millibar pressure. The Emberr lists a clip-on propane hose without the pressure. The George Foreman names a UK regulator and hose in the bullets and the box line. Inspect the part against the plate before you attach a cylinder. The Yamara bullets name a 37 mbar clip-on propane hose. The included-components field does not name the hose. Confirm the package before a £539.99 purchase. Original reviews say there is no gas pipe. The covered Pro Deluxe requires a 37 mbar propane or 28 mbar butane kit. The Campfire says the hose is not included. The gas barbecue buying guide puts the fitting before footprint. Never use a regulator whose markings disagree with the plate.

Two parts that look relevant but are not

The Taino 90007 regulator is specified at 50 mbar with a DIN inlet for Germany and Austria. It is not the ordinary 37 mbar, 27 mm UK patio-gas regulator. A shared brand name does not make the pressure or the bottle connection compatible. The Brando manual calls for a low-pressure regulator and screw-connection hose that are not included. The researched listing had no GBP offer on 16 October 2026. Do not import that 50 mbar accessory to fill the gap. A Char-Broil disposable cylinder and a refillable patio cylinder can both contain propane, and their connections differ. Use the cylinder or approved conversion Char-Broil describes. Once pressure, gas and connector match, leak-test outdoors with soapy water and turn the gas off at the cylinder first. If the plate is missing or a leak returns, a competent gas professional should take over.

Common questions

What regulator do I need for a UK gas barbecue?
Use the pressure, gas type and connector specified on the appliance plate and manual. A common patio-gas combination is 37 mbar propane with a 27 mm clip-on valve, but it is not universal. If the listing omits those details, ask the manufacturer before buying a kit.
Is patio gas the same as propane?
Patio gas is propane supplied in a cylinder with a convenient clip-on valve, commonly 27 mm in Great Britain. Red propane also contains propane but often uses a screw-on connection. The same gas family does not make the regulators physically interchangeable.
Can I use butane on a 37 mbar barbecue?
Only if the manufacturer explicitly approves butane and states the required regulator. Butane is commonly supplied at 28–30 mbar and may use a 21 mm clip, so a 37 mbar propane appliance cannot simply be moved to butane by choosing a bottle that fits.
Why will red propane not click onto my patio regulator?
Red propane commonly uses a screw-on valve, while green patio gas commonly uses a 27 mm clip. The difference is intentional. Buy the regulator specified for the cylinder and appliance rather than forcing the clip or using an unapproved adaptor.
Is a 50 mbar Taino regulator suitable in the UK?
Not by default. The researched Taino 90007 is a 50 mbar DIN product for Germany and Austria, not the common UK 37 mbar patio-gas part. Match the UK appliance plate and bottle valve instead of matching only the brand name.
What if the data plate is missing?
Do not guess from another model or an online photograph. Ask the manufacturer or seller for the exact manual and gas specification. If the appliance cannot be positively identified, a competent gas professional should assess it before any cylinder is connected.
