How to connect a gas barbecue safely

Updated: 16 October 2026

Knowing how to connect a gas barbecue begins before you press the regulator onto the bottle. You need an outdoor position, the hose specified for the appliance, and a cylinder with the matching valve. This page follows the UK sequence for a typical 27 mm clip-on patio-gas connection: check, connect, leak-test, light and shut down. It is not a procedure for every cartridge. Which boxes name a hose is in the [Taino gas barbecue comparison](/hub/grills-and-barbecues/taino-gas-barbecue). If the pressure is still unknown, use the [UK gas BBQ regulator guide](/hub/grills-and-barbecues/taino-gas-barbecue/sub/taino-gas-barbecue-regulator) first. The Products Compared editorial team did not light these grills.

Check the hose is right before you click

Read the data plate and manual, then compare their pressure and gas type with the regulator. A common UK patio-gas setup uses a 27 mm clip-on propane regulator at 37 mbar. Butane may use 28–30 mbar and a different clip. Red propane commonly uses a screw-on connection. Never make an incompatible part fit with an improvised adaptor. Inspect the hose before each use and replace cracked or heat-affected parts as the manufacturer instructs. Every burner control stays off. Work outdoors, away from doors, tents, awnings and caravans. A garage with the door open is still not the cooking location. The Original and Pro Deluxe do not supply the hose in the listing evidence. The Emberr, Compact and George Foreman name one. The Grill2Go specifies a disposable cylinder, so this sequence is not its fitting procedure. If the manual and the kit disagree, do not connect them.

Clip the patio bottle on

Calor's instructions for its 27 mm clip-on begin with the regulator switch off. Check that the valve area is clean and keep your face away. Hold the regulator squarely over the valve and press down firmly until it clicks. Do not press at an angle. Calor describes a quarter turn anticlockwise to switch its gas on and clockwise to turn it off. Follow the markings on your regulator. Opening the valve is not permission to light. The connection must pass a leak test first. If it will not click on easily, remove it and recheck the connector. A 21 mm butane clip or a red-propane nut is not a stubborn 27 mm patio valve. Ask the gas supplier to identify the parts.

Leak-test with soapy water outdoors

Keep every burner knob off. Char-Broil UK recommends a roughly 50:50 mixture of detergent and water. Apply it to the cylinder-to-regulator connection, the hose ends and the other joints the manufacturer names, then open the bottle valve. Growing bubbles mean escaping gas. Do not use a match, lighter or any flame to search for a leak. If bubbles appear, close the cylinder valve and do not light the barbecue. Recheck the fit, then follow the manufacturer's procedure. If bubbles return, stop and have the system checked or replace the faulty component. Do not tighten unfamiliar gas joints by guesswork. Calor warns that if the flame does not go out when you turn its regulator off, leave the appliance alight and call Calor on 03457 444 999. That is Calor's instruction, not a substitute for your supplier's emergency procedure. Do not disconnect a flowing regulator to solve the fault.

Light, cook, then turn the gas off first

After a clear leak test, open the lid before lighting unless the manual gives another method. Follow the model's ignition sequence. If it does not light promptly, turn it off and wait for the period the manual states before trying again. Never lean over the cooking area while igniting. If you smell gas or see flame where it should not be, turn the controls and cylinder off if that is safe, and stop. GOV.UK outdoor fire-safety guidance says to turn the gas supply off first after cooking, then the barbecue control, so gas left in the line can burn away. Let the barbecue cool. Calor advises disconnecting its patio-gas regulator after use. A missing hose is covered in the gas barbecue buying guide.

Common questions

What if the barbecue did not come with a hose?
Do not connect a generic hose by appearance. Read the data plate and manual for gas type, pressure and connector, then buy a compliant kit that matches both the appliance and the cylinder. Ask the manufacturer or gas supplier if any part of that specification is missing.
How do I leak-test a gas barbecue?
With the barbecue outdoors and all burner controls off, apply a roughly 50:50 detergent-and-water solution to the specified joints. Open the cylinder and watch for growing bubbles. Close the gas if bubbles appear. Never test with a flame, and stop if a leak returns.
What do I turn off first after cooking?
Turn off the supply at the cylinder first, then the barbecue controls after the flame dies. This is the order in GOV.UK outdoor fire-safety guidance. Follow the supplier's instructions for disconnecting and storing the regulator once the appliance is cool.
Can I keep the bottle under the trolley?
Keep the cylinder upright beside the barbecue while it is lit, away from hot surfaces and with the hose protected. Do not assume a trolley cabinet is safe for an operating bottle. Use the location and clearances specified by the manufacturer.
Does this work for the Char-Broil disposable cylinder?
No. The Grill2Go listing specifies a disposable 16.4 ounce propane cylinder sold separately. Its fitting is not the same as the 27 mm patio-gas clip-on sequence described here. Follow the Char-Broil manual and use the specified cylinder or an approved conversion.
When should a professional take over?
Stop for a leak that returns, a valve that will not close, damaged pipework, a missing data plate or any installation involving fixed pipework or improvised adaptation. A competent gas professional, the manufacturer or the cylinder supplier should identify and repair the system before it is used.
