Pedestal BBQ vs trolley BBQ

Updated: 23 October 2026

Pedestal, kettle and trolley overlap on amazon.co.uk until you are not sure whether you need a charcoal stand or a wheeled cart. This page separates three shapes that share a wheel, then says when a stand is enough and when shelves or a gas hob change the choice. The [pedestal BBQ comparison](/hub/grills-and-barbecues/pedestal-bbq) assumes you already lean toward a freestanding charcoal bowl. Peter F., DIY and tools editor, used the nine pedestal listings in this set. This page does not score gas burners. Three shapes that share a wheel

A pedestal barbecue in UK shops is a charcoal bowl on a stand, usually a round lidded kettle with two wheels. The Weber Original Kettle 57 cm in this set is that shape: stand, lid, dampers, ash system, not a cabinet. A charcoal cart, such as Weber UK’s Performer 57 cm at £479 on the brand page, keeps the kettle idea and adds a side table and a shelf. That Performer is not in this set. A gas trolley is a different fuel: burners, often a side hob, and a cylinder stored outdoors. The FINE GARDEN 17 inch listing says portable trolley while the features still describe a round kettle. Wheels on a stand are not a gas cart. Freestanding means legs at standing height. Diameter sits on the pedestal barbecue buying guide.

When the stand is the one to keep

Keep a charcoal pedestal when you want lid-on flavour, two vents, and a smaller footprint than a cart. Which? frames charcoal as cheaper to buy, capable of hotter sears, slower to light and cool, and more cleaning. That matches a kettle on a stand if you cook a few times a month and will empty an ash pan. In this set the Weber, CosmoGrill, HOMION PHM0908 and FINE GARDEN 17 inch are stands or kettles, not gas trolleys. Choose the stand when a garden table already holds the trays and charcoal taste is the point. Skip it when you want shelves or instant ignition more than a dome of coals.

When a trolley earns the space

A trolley earns the width when you need a side table for trays and raw meat, or gas ignition without ash. Which? notes gas as easy to light and control, often with less char and a higher purchase price. If you leave charcoal for gas, GOV.UK still says store cylinders outside, not under the stairs. A charcoal cart such as the Performer keeps kettle cooking and adds shelves, at £479 on Weber UK. That is a different purchase from the Original Kettle stand at about £169.99. A data field that says Cart does not turn that kettle into a gas trolley. If you light three weeknights a week and hate ash, a gas trolley bought outside this comparison is the honest answer.

Folding stands are not a secret third winner

Folding legs solve packing, not the trolley question. The Tower XL at about £49.99 folds and still carries a lid; UK reviews call the build fiddly. The HOMION folding kettle at about £44.95 sits at 2.8 from 19 with toppling complaints. The FINE GARDEN folding grill at about £27.99 has no lid in the included parts, so it is neither a kettle nor a trolley. If you want charcoal flavour, a lid and two vents, and you already have a table, stay with a pedestal kettle. If you need weeknight lighting and no ash, buy a gas cart elsewhere. Who should skip each charcoal row is on best pedestal charcoal barbecue.

Common questions

What is a pedestal barbecue if it is not a trolley?
A charcoal bowl on a stand at cooking height, usually a lidded kettle with wheels. It is not a gas cabinet and not automatically a cart with side shelves.
When is a kettle on a stand enough?
When charcoal taste and lid control matter more than prep shelves or a side hob, and you accept lighting time and ash cleaning.
When do side shelves actually change the cook?
When you run out of clean space for trays and raw food beside the grate. If a garden table already does that job, shelves are optional width.
Is a charcoal cart the same choice as a gas trolley?
No. A charcoal cart keeps coals and ash; a gas trolley changes the fuel. Both are wider than a simple stand.
Does trolley in a kettle title mean a gas barbecue?
Often no. It can mean two wheels on a kettle stand. Read the fuel field and the photos before you assume burners.
Are folding legs a trolley?
No. They pack the grill away. They do not add shelves or a gas hob, and a lidless folder is not a kettle.
Which is simpler on a weeknight, charcoal or gas?
Gas is simpler to light and leaves no ash, which is why trolleys win busy evenings. Charcoal wins when flavour is the point and you have the time.
