Charcoal BBQ for a small garden

Updated: 23 October 2026

A two-person yard with a shed is not the same problem as a flat that only has a balcony, yet both searches land on a small charcoal BBQ. This page starts with the legal outdoor spot, then names which saved bowls are light enough to roll away, and stops if you have nowhere safe to light a fire. It refuses balconies. It does not teach a balcony method. The [pedestal BBQ comparison](/hub/grills-and-barbecues/pedestal-bbq) holds prices. Peter F., DIY and tools editor, followed London Fire Brigade and GOV.UK advice. A balcony is outside this category

London Fire Brigade’s BBQ guidance and the April 2024 leaflet say do not use a barbecue on a balcony. Position it on level ground, not on decking, and keep it away from sheds, fences and trees while it is lit. NHS advice: carbon monoxide from a barbecue in a confined space means fresh air, NHS 111 for symptoms, and 999 if breathing is hard or if there is confusion, collapse, weakness, or chest or muscle pain. GOV.UK says never in a house, tent, awning or caravan. Shop pages still print balconies. CosmoGrill bullets in this set mention them. A shop line is not clearance. OPSS restricted supply of disposable single-use trays in the August 2026 wildfire position; that did not allow charcoal on a balcony. If your only outdoor space is a balcony, stop here. A smaller pedestal is not a workaround.

What small means on the ground

Small, on this page, means a legal patch of level ground you can keep clear while the fire is hot, plus somewhere dry to store the bowl cold. Decking is the wrong base in the London Fire Brigade leaflet. Parks can ban any open fire. Neighbour smoke can be a statutory nuisance; pick wind and timing, and do not drag the kettle indoors to finish. A 3.5 kg kettle with wheels rolls in after it is cold. A 14.5 kg Weber needs a clearer path — Weber UK puts the 57 cm Original at about 100 cm high with the lid closed. The FINE GARDEN 17 inch kettle lists 45 × 45 × 100 cm at 4.5 kg, tall for a low shed. Measure the door before you fall for compact in a title. Wet ash under a cover rusts the bowl. Diameter stays on the pedestal barbecue buying guide.

Which saved bowls are the small-garden candidates

The HOMION PHM0908 at about £28.99 is the two-person kettle in this set: 43.5 cm in the title, 3.5 kg, lid, wheels, ash pan, 4.1 from 150 reviews. UK reviewers call it small and suitable for two. The bottom vent, reviews say, opens only when cold, the bowl is light enough to knock over, and some doubt a second season. It is a small-garden candidate with those conditions, not a balcony exception. The FINE GARDEN folding stand at about £27.99 weighs 1.8 kg and packs flat, yet the included parts do not list a lid. The Tower XL at about £49.99 folds with a lid at 5.3 kg if you accept a fiddly build. The FINE GARDEN 17 inch kettle can feed about four, but arrival damage shows up and the 100 cm height fights a low roof. Weber at 14.5 kg is the family lid-on kettle when the garden can take the mass. The folding HOMION at 2.8 stars does not become a small-garden winner. Who should skip it is on best pedestal charcoal barbecue.

Common questions

What charcoal barbecue fits two people and a shed?
In this set, the HOMION PHM0908 at 3.5 kg with a lid and wheels is the clearest two-person candidate, if you accept the cold-only vent notes. Measure the shed door before you step up to a 14 kg kettle.
Can you use a charcoal kettle on a balcony in London?
No. London Fire Brigade advice says do not use a barbecue on a balcony. A product bullet that mentions balconies is not permission.
Is decking an acceptable base?
The April 2024 London Fire Brigade leaflet says not on decking. Use level ground kept clear of sheds, fences and trees while the fire is lit.
Does a folding grill solve storage if it has no lid?
It solves packing. It does not replace a kettle for lid-on cooks. Decide whether storage or dome heat matters more before you buy the 1.8 kg folder.
Is the 17 inch kettle small enough?
Often for four people on a good day, though 100 cm height can be awkward for a low shed, and arrival damage shows up in reviews. Inspect the parcel.
Why does a product page mention balconies if the fire brigade says no?
Listings market outdoor use broadly. Fire-brigade and landlord rules still govern what you may light. Believe the safety page over the bullet.
Can you bring a cooling barbecue into a tent or kitchen?
No. GOV.UK and NHS both treat indoor and tent use as a carbon monoxide risk. Cool fully outdoors before you move the bowl to storage.
What if the only outdoor space is a balcony?
Do not buy a charcoal pedestal from this category for that space. The refusal is the answer; a smaller bowl is not a workaround.
