What a pedestal barbecue is in a UK shop

In UK shops a pedestal barbecue is a charcoal bowl on a stand, and the usual keeper is a round lidded kettle with wheels. People buy one when they want charcoal flavour without the width of a gas trolley. A square bowl with folding legs is a weaker match than a round dome, and an open stand without a lid cannot do indirect cooks.

Diameter and the numbers that do not agree

Weber UK puts a 47 cm Original Kettle at 1,548 cm² and the 57 cm at 2,342 cm², framed as six to eight people. Those headcounts are opinions, not a standard. In this saved set the Weber Original Kettle 57 cm is about £169.99. The brand page states 2,342 cm² at 14.5 kg. The amazon.co.uk listing also prints 62 × 62 × 39 cm and 2,552 square centimetres. Write that as a conflict. Do not average the two areas. CosmoGrill’s 54 cm kettle at about £79.99 prints 54 square centimetres in the cooking-area field — the diameter copied into the wrong unit. AUUIJKJF and BOWEKAM sit near £155–£172 with dimension fields of a few centimetres or millimetres. A 43.5 cm bowl such as the HOMION PHM0908 at about £28.99 is enough for two if reviewers calling it small match your meal. Jump to 54–57 cm for lid-on family cooks. If two size lines disagree, open the brand page when one exists. Who should skip each listing is on best pedestal charcoal barbecue.

Vents, enamel, ash and a bowl that stands

Lid plus two dampers is the control check. Without a lid you cannot hold heat. Without a bottom vent you can move while the bowl is hot, you cannot feed oxygen mid-cook. UK reviews on the HOMION PHM0908 say the bottom vent sits inside the drum and opens only when the bowl is cold. A lid thermometer reads the dome, which is cooler than the grate. A removable catcher matters because ash blocks the bottom vent if it piles up. Porcelain enamel is fired glass on steel, not paint. Weber UK’s page for model 1502202 splits the warranty into ten, five and two years by part. The saved Amazon field shows only 2. Quote the brand page when they disagree. A 4.4 from five reviews is not the same evidence as 4.4 from 70 or 4.1 from 150.

What the standard does not prove

BS EN 1860-1:2024 covers reusable solid-fuel barbecues; single-use trays sit under EN 1860-4. None of the nine listings states BS EN 1860-1:2024. A missing mark is not a published fail, and you should not invent a pass. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 still applies: satisfactory quality, and thirty days to reject. GOV.UK still bars charcoal indoors, in a tent, an awning or a caravan. If a cart might be wiser, read pedestal BBQ vs trolley BBQ before you buy shelves you will not use.

Common questions

What should you check on a pedestal charcoal barbecue before you pay?
Confirm it is a freestanding bowl with a lid and two vents you can move hot, a cooking area that is not a copied diameter, an ash path you can empty cold, and a stand that does not rock. Then read the review count at that price. Prices live on the main comparison.
Is a 43 cm kettle enough, or do you need 54–57 cm?
A bowl around 43–45 cm suits two people for short cooks if the lid fits and the stand is stable. Weber UK frames the 57 cm kettle as six to eight people on its page; other writers say one to four. Pick diameter for the meal you actually cook, not for a single headcount claim.
Why do lid and bowl vents both matter?
The bowl vent feeds oxygen to the coals. The lid vent lets smoke and heat leave. Both open at the start; change one a little, then wait about five minutes. A vent that only moves when the bowl is cold cannot do that job mid-cook.
Is porcelain enamel the same as painted steel?
No. Porcelain enamel is a glass coating fired onto steel. Paint is a thinner film. Enamel resists rust-through better in damp storage, though you still dry the bowl and keep wet ash out from under a cover.
What is an ash catcher for?
It collects ash below the grate so the bottom vent stays clear and you can empty the pan when everything is cold. Leaving ash packed against the vent chokes the fire.
Does a lid thermometer tell you the grate temperature?
It reads the dome air, which runs cooler than the grate surface. Use it as a trend, then check the food with a probe if the cook is long.
Does a missing BS EN 1860-1 mark mean the grill failed the standard?
No. It means this listing does not claim that standard. Absence is not a published fail, and you should not invent a pass either.
