Charcoal barbecue buying guide

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are staring at twelve charcoal listings on amazon.co.uk and the numbers already disagree with each other. One field prints 47 square centimetres. The bullet next to it claims 1,548 cm². This charcoal barbecue buying guide is the decision order before you open the table, not a ranking of a top pick and not a lighting lesson. The Products Compared editorial team wrote it on 21 October 2026 from these listings and public UK sources. We did not cook these grills in a lab. Shelf prices move, so the pounds sit on the [barbecue comparison](/hub/grills-and-barbecues/barbecue). A qualifying purchase through our links can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

What you are actually buying

Every row here burns charcoal. Gas burners, hoses and electric plates belong in sibling categories, so a burner-count size guide does not map onto these pages. What you are buying is a fuel bed, a cooking grate and, on most listings, a lid you can close. BBC Good Food still puts size, vents and a thermometer near the front of that choice. Dunelm adds that charcoal often needs about twenty minutes before you cook and is harder to turn down than gas. Treat those lines as orientation. The open Amig AZKAR at £17.89 is the exception. A UK review states the main limit: there is no lid, so you can sear outdoors but you cannot run closed-lid heat. Shape, round kettle versus long barrel, is kettle or barrel barbecue.

Lid, vents and a gauge

Closed-lid cooking needs a lid that seats and vents you can move. Weber UK describes air in through the bowl damper and heat out through the lid damper, and tells you not to shut both while food is on. The Weber Compact 47 cm at £49.49 lists dampers and a lid, and it does not claim a thermometer in the bullets. One UK review expected a gauge from the description and did not find one. The Weber Original 47 cm at £111.24 and the Premium 57 cm at £239.00 do claim a built-in lid thermometer. That is the Compact-versus-Original split: same grate claim on the 47 cm models, different gauge line. A gauge reads air under the lid, not the middle of the food. Do not skip the vents. A HOMION 43.5 cm review says the bottom vent sits inside the drum and opens only when the grill is cold, so set it before you light.

Grate claims that contradict the field

Trust the bullet that names a real area, and treat a square-centimetre field that merely repeats the diameter as noise. Both Weber 47 cm kettles print 1,548 cm² in the bullets, while a field prints 47 square centimetres. The Premium prints 2,342 cm² against a 57 square centimetre field. Big Smokey’s bullet states a 71 × 35.3 cm main grill. KEYO listings print 537 and 469 square inches as claims, not as measured tape. Headcount on a bullet is a seller line, not a count of burgers on these ASINs. A shortlist from stars, lid and shelf price is best charcoal barbecue.

The box, the standard and the smoke rule

Price is the last check. Match it to the included-components line. The HOMION kettle lists a grill cover, lid and spatula there; the bullets add an ash pan, wheels and a lid hook. Warranty text often truncates to “2.”, “10.”, “12 months.” or “2 years.” Do not invent a decade of cover from a truncated digit. Only Big Smokey’s bullet claims EN 1860-1. BS EN 1860-1:2024 is the solid-fuel barbecue standard BSI published on 28 February 2025. A bullet with no edition and no certificate is a claim, not a document you have checked. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 9, goods must be of satisfactory quality given the price and the description. GOV.UK says you can use an outdoor barbecue in a smoke control area; the restricted case is a chimney on a building. Outdoor smoke can still be a statutory nuisance. The same outdoor fire guidance bans petrol or paraffin on the coals, bans charcoal indoors, in a tent, under an awning or in a caravan, and puts cold ash on bare soil, not in a wheelie bin.

Common questions

Do I need a lid?
You need a lid if you want closed-lid heat and indirect cooking on a windy patio. Most of the twelve listings describe one. The Amig AZKAR does not, and a UK review names that as the main limit. An open box can still sear for a couple outdoors. It will not behave like a kettle.
How do vents change the heat?
More open vents mean more air and a hotter fire under a closed lid. Weber UK starts with both vents open, then makes small changes and waits about five minutes. Do not close both vents while food is cooking. If your bottom vent only moves when cold, set it before you light.
How many people does a 47 cm kettle claim to feed?
The Weber 47 cm bullets claim four to six people and 1,548 cm². That is a seller line. UK reviews on the Original still split between four to five people and running out beyond two. Plan the meal from the food, not from the bullet alone.
Does “EN 1860-1” on a bullet mean the grill is certified?
Not on the evidence here. Only Big Smokey prints that line, with no edition and no certificate saved. Treat it as a claim until you see a document.
What if the included line is narrower than the bullets?
Believe the narrower included-components line when you open the box, and keep the bullets as advertising. The HOMION oil drum is the clear example: lid only on the included line, gauge and ash pan in the bullets. Missing described goods engage the Consumer Rights Act process with the seller.
