Rib rack for kamado: close the lid before the slots

Updated: 23 October 2026

You cook on a Kamado Joe or a Big Green Egg, and a rib rack for kamado has to clear the dome with the plate setter in. A frame that fits the bare grate can still stop the lid with the deflector in, and a rack titled for a Ninja Woodfire XL is a different cooker. This page stays with ceramic cookers. Prices are on the [rib rack comparison](/hub/grill-accessories/rib-rack). A link there can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Sizes are printed lines from maker pages, UK shops, and the amazon.co.uk files. They were not remeasured on a dome.

Kamado Joe KJ-RR on a Classic or a Big Joe

The KJ-RR is the rack in this set that Kamado Joe aims at a Classic and a Big Joe. The maker’s page says stainless, those two cookers, grate or heat deflector, and it showed £27.99 when that page was read. The amazon snapshot is £23.72, with 4.8 from 229 reviews. One line is 26 × 38.1 × 11.4 cm and the same file also prints 10.3 × 15 × 4.5 cm. Order against the larger line. Indirect means the deflector is in and the rack sits above it. The rack is not the deflector. The bullets say up to six slabs. Great Outdoors BBQ Co says five, and a UK review held five on an 18-inch kamado. Sauce and the pork check are on how to use a rib rack.

Big Green Egg size is part of the name

Big Green Egg sells its ribs and roasting rack in two codes, and the code is the fit. On the European page, 117564 is for 2XL, XL, and Large. 117557 is for Medium. It is a flip V for a roast up to 5 kg, and the page says the size is not universal across eggs. A Large frame in a Medium, plate setter underneath, is the usual way the lid fails. A large V used as a roast cradle may not let a Medium lid close. The same frame turned over as a rib rack can sit lower. If you own a Medium, start from 117557 and try the lid cold with the setter in. If you own a Large, XL, or 2XL, 117564 is the code the maker publishes. A rack that only says “18-inch” is not that code.

The other racks in this comparison

VBOYL names an egg, and it is not Big Green Egg’s own rack. The bullets claim six rib plates and 18-inch grills, including a Large or XL Egg. The file shows £19.99, 4.3 from seven UK reviews, and 34.8 × 25.4 × 11.9 cm. One review says it is too small for the turkey in the title. Do not treat the 18-inch line as code 117564. Amazon Basics is a four-slot rack at £15.11, 27.71 × 29.21 × 7.59 cm, 4.6 from 115 reviews. The bullets do not name a kamado. A review says the frame was too big for that cooker’s kamado. If your egg is small, put the 29 cm side against the grate and the setter before you assume four slots will hide.

A Ninja rack is not a kamado rack

Huanniu is the false friend. The title says a Ninja Woodfire XL, OG850 and OG901, at £18.69, 35 × 20 × 9.5 cm. A UK review says it fits a Ninja smoker and misses a non-XL Ninja, and that it still worked in an oven and on a gas barbecue. SharkNinja’s own XL rib rack is a separate product for the OG850UK and OG901UK. Neither is a kamado accessory. For a gas barbecue or a Q, use the rib rack buying guide.

Common questions

Does the Kamado Joe rack fit a Classic and a Big Joe?
Kamado Joe’s page and the Appliances Direct listing say Classic and Big Joe, grate or heat deflector. The useful size is 26 × 38.1 × 11.4 cm. The amazon file also prints 10.3 × 15 × 4.5 cm, so measure the parcel. A UK review held five slabs on an 18-inch kamado. That does not extend the claim to every 18-inch ceramic cooker.
Do I cook on the grate or over the deflector?
Both appear in the KJ-RR description, and they are different cooks. On the grate the rack is closer to the fire. Over the deflector the zone is indirect, which keeps the wires off a direct flame for a long rib cook. The deflector plates are a separate accessory. The rib rack does not replace them.
Will a Large Big Green Egg rack fit a Medium with the plate setter in?
Often it will not, if you use the large V as a roast stand with the setter underneath. Egg’s page splits the rack into 117564 for 2XL, XL, and Large, and 117557 for Medium. Forum owners say the same large frame, turned over as a rib rack, can sit lower. Try the lid cold with your setter in.
Why does amazon say six slabs when shops say five?
The amazon bullets for the KJ-RR say up to six racks of ribs. Great Outdoors BBQ Co says five, and a UK review held five on an 18-inch kamado. The shop figure and the review are the cautious count. Six is the bullet. Neither number changes the lid clearance.
Is the VBOYL rack the Big Green Egg one?
No. VBOYL is a separate listing at £19.99 that mentions 18-inch grills and a Large or XL Egg. Big Green Egg’s racks are 117564 and 117557. VBOYL has seven UK reviews, and one says it is too small for the turkey in the title. Read it as a third-party V, then test the lid.
