Stainless or painted BBQ table

Updated: 23 October 2026

Two listings sit side by side, one titled stainless and one coated steel, and the metal is the decision. A stainless or painted BBQ table choice depends on the winter you have, and on whether the listing named a grade. In this amazon.co.uk set only one cart prints 304. Several others say stainless and still draw UK rust notes aimed at screws. This page does not rank a winner. Prices stay on the [grill cart comparison](/hub/grill-accessories/grill-cart). Three different tops

The first material is a named grade. Yvsevnr H0133's bullets say a 304 stainless worktop and a powder-coated frame, at £99.98. That is the only kept listing that prints the number 304. The British Stainless Steel Association describes 304 and 316 as the grades used for most food-plant kit, with 316 the step people take when chlorides are harsher. Printing 304 is not a certificate. The line is 3.8 from 11 reviews, with one United Kingdom text. The second material is unnamed stainless. Onlyfire, Vivo, PARGRILL, MDDK, and YODOLLA use stainless without 304 or 430. If the bullet does not say, you do not get to assume 304. The third material is painted or powder-coated iron and steel. KHAMAL specifies iron and steel with a corrosion-resistant coating. Nomiou specifies lacquered or painted alloy steel.

What fails outdoors

Chlorides do the damage people blame on bad stainless. Salt air and some cleaners attack 304 as well as cheaper alloys. The British Stainless Steel Association points at carbon-steel contamination: a carbon-steel screw left wet leaves tea-coloured stains that look as if the whole top has failed. Mild steel rusts once powder coat is scratched. None of these kept carts claims 316. Painted steel fails on the chip. KHAMAL's UK texts, 4.6 from 24, do not repeat a rust theme in the file read here. That is a short sample, not a promise.

Who should pick which

If the cart lives on an inland patio, under a roof, and you wipe it after rain, a coated table can be the sensible buy. KHAMAL at £79.99 is that case: it folds, and no load is printed. The moment a corner chips to bare steel, that spot rusts. If the cart stands in salt air, pay for a grade the bullet actually prints, then read the sample. Yvsevnr is the only 304 claim here, and one UK review says the gas hole is too narrow for a regulator. Do not drill it. Unnamed stainless is what most of this set is. The order of the other checks is the BBQ trolley buying guide.

What a cover does and does not do

A cover keeps rain off a sound coating. YODOLLA includes a waterproof cover. Most of the prep carts here do not. A cover is not a rust-proofing step. Trapped damp can sit on ordinary screws. Take the cover off when the cart can air, and do not store a wet coated top zipped up for a month. Bleach and salt are the cleaners to keep off these tops. The first wet week after assembly is how to set up a BBQ trolley.

Common questions

Is stainless steel rust-proof on a patio?
No. Stainless resists rust better than bare steel and still stains, especially where chlorides sit or where carbon-steel screws touch the top. BSSA describes tea staining from contamination that looks like the steel has failed. UK reviews of Vivo and PARGRILL report rust within weeks on carts sold as stainless. Nothing in this set is rust-proof, food-safe certified, or NSF listed.
What is 304, and which listing actually says it?
304 is the common stainless grade BSSA cites for food-plant surfaces, with 316 used where chlorides are harsher. In this set only Yvsevnr's bullets say a 304 worktop, at £99.98, on a powder-coated frame. The listing is 3.8 from 11 reviews and one UK text about a gas hole. The number is a claim on that page, not a test certificate and not a recommendation by itself.
Is 430 good enough outside?
BSSA places 430 on drier duty, such as splashbacks and panels, rather than the wettest food-contact plant. Costway names 430 on a budget grill cart, which is honest labelling. Most amazon listings here do not name 430 or 304. If yours is silent, you cannot know which you are buying. For a covered inland patio, unnamed stainless or a sound coating can still be enough. For salt and standing water, silence is the problem.
When is painted steel the sensible buy?
When the cart lives under cover, you will wipe chips, and the rest of the spec fits. KHAMAL's coated folding table at £79.99 and 4.6 from 24 reviews is that case, with no stated load and no repeated rust theme in the UK texts read. Nomiou is also painted, at £69.99, and its UK reviews are about unfinished assembly rather than a season of weather. Painted steel is the wrong economy if the coating is already damaged in the box.
Why do stainless carts still rust at the screws?
Because the screws are often ordinary steel. Vivo reviews say the fixings are not stainless, and rust shows on those points within weeks, including under a cover. PARGRILL has a similar outdoor note. The top can be a stainless alloy while the hardware is not. Replacing a rusty screw with another carbon-steel screw repeats the stain. The listing rarely names the screw grade.
Does food law make me buy 304 for a home barbecue?
No. Regulation (EC) No 852/2004, as retained, binds food business operators to suitable contact surfaces. It does not set a grade for a household patio cart, and cooking at home on painted steel is not a hygiene offence described on that page. If you trade from the cart, read the regulation and keep a grade you can name. A home cook can choose on weather and on the bullet text.
