Cast iron griddle plate: what to measure before you buy

Updated: 23 October 2026

You want one flat top for a full English and burgers, on a UK gas hob or on barbecue bars, and the amazon.co.uk title makes the choice look simple. A cast iron griddle plate is a heavy reversible slab, and the listing often mixes length, metal, and care in one line. Measure the hob or the grate, then read the material line and the care line, before you sort by stars. The [cast iron griddle plate comparison](/hub/grill-accessories/griddle-plate-cast-iron) ranks the ten plates we kept. Shelf prices were captured on 19 October 2026. We did not run a lab test.

Hob plate or barbecue insert

A hob plate and a Weber insert do different jobs, even when both titles say cast iron. The hob plates here are rectangles meant to sit on burners or on bars you already have. A length of about 45–51 cm spans two gas burners. The two onlyfire plates are cut for a named Weber cookbox. If you want the plate to replace part of the grate, use the cast iron griddle for a Weber. Both inserts are about £59.99 and both print exclusions. A 50 × 25 cm plate can sit on barbecue bars. Weber part 6790 is porcelain-enamelled cast iron at £189.99, and it is not one of these bare half plates. OPSS alert 2502-0151 recalls named Emba cookware. Do not stretch that recall to every brand.

Size, weight, and handles

Write the burner spacing down before you trust a bullet. LDXDRU shows the trap: details say 33 × 20 × 2 cm and 2.5 kg, a bullet says 40 × 20 cm, at about £21.99. If the smaller figure arrives, it is a camping plate. nuovva is 50 × 25 cm and 5.36 kg. OVERMONT is 51.2 × 23.5 × 1.2 cm and 3.6 kg. Dayacoco is 42 × 25 cm and 4 kg. Mihoho cannot be planned: Round, 33 cm, and 42 × 33 cm appear in different fields, with no review text. Weight in the wider set runs from 2.27 kg to 7.07 kg. The two Velaze listings share one review pool, at 2.27 kg and 4.55 kg. Handles get hot. If you cannot lift about 5 kg in oven gloves, skip the 5.36 kg nuovva and the 7.07 kg Genesis insert.

Seasoning claim versus a coating

Pre-seasoned is a factory oil layer, not a non-stick coating. nuovva’s title says pre-seasoned and the non-stick field says no. Reviews still describe sticking until several oil cycles. Dayacoco’s non-stick field says yes, and one buyer’s pancakes stuck at first use. One Velaze field says yes. The other says coating-free. The shared reviews say food stuck until the plate was seasoned. Dishwasher is No except on Mihoho, which says Yes and has no review text. OVERMONT prints the useful step: dry the plate, then a thin coat of oil while warm. Oils and temperatures are on how to season a cast iron griddle. An oil claim does not answer induction.

What the price bands buy

These are shelf prices from 19 October 2026, not a promise that Amazon still shows the same figure. About £22–£30 holds a rust-heavy small file, a 22-review plate, the lighter Velaze, OVERMONT at 4.2 from 770, and Mihoho at 5.0 from two ratings with no review text. A cheap plate whose reviews cluster on rust is a different buy from one that prints a dry-and-oil step. About £31–£42 holds the heavier Velaze, nuovva at 4.4 from 1,077, and NutriChef at 4.0 from 4,421. Do not add the Velaze counts. The texts overlap. NutriChef’s feature bullets describe server shelves. Ignore them. The about £59.99 onlyfire line is a Weber-fit conversation.

Check it in the first month

Heat a new plate once while you can still reject it. Consumer Rights Act 2015 section 22 gives 30 days to reject goods that do not conform. Rust on arrival, a crack, a warp, or a broken handle are reasons to reject the plate, not to season harder. LDXDRU’s title says cast iron and the material line says Metal. If the goods match the Emba alert, stop using them. Confirm the length, dry the plate, oil it, and cook once inside those 30 days.

Common questions

What length spans two burners?
A hob plate about 45–51 cm long is the size this set uses for two burners. nuovva is 50 × 25 cm and OVERMONT is 51.2 cm long. Dayacoco at 42 cm may fall short, so measure the pan supports. A 33 cm plate sits on one burner.
Will it go in the dishwasher?
Dishwasher is No except on Mihoho, which says Yes with no review text. A wet cycle is a common way these plates rust. Wash briefly, dry on a low burner, and wipe on a thin coat of oil.
How heavy is too heavy to lift with oven gloves?
There is no official limit in these sources. The wider set runs from 2.27 kg to 7.07 kg, and the handles get hot. nuovva is 5.36 kg and the Genesis II insert is 7.07 kg. If you cannot lift that mass in gloves, choose a lighter listing.
Should I buy a Weber insert instead of a hob plate?
Buy the insert when your grill is on the printed list and you want the plate in the cookbox. Buy the hob plate when you cook on gas or you only want a slab on the bars. A 50 cm rectangle does not become a Spirit fit because it is also cast iron.
Is a plate under £25 a false economy if reviews mention rust?
It is a poor buy when rust is already there on delivery, as several LDXDRU texts describe. It can be a fair entry price when the listing tells you to dry and oil the plate and the file is large enough to show that owners do it. Budget for oil and a scraper either way.
