How to light a barbecue with firelighters

Updated: 23 October 2026

The charcoal is still black, the matchbox is in your hand, and a bottle of accelerant is the wrong next step. How to light a barbecue with firelighters is a sequence for cold fuel outdoors: a solid starter, air, and a wait until the bed is ready for food. The [firelighter comparison](/hub/grill-accessories/firelighter) is where the boxes are listed. The Products Compared editorial team used public UK safety pages and the amazon.co.uk files as they stood on 20 October 2026. There was no timed test of these eleven packs. Set the firelighter on cold fuel

Put the piece on fuel that is not already alight. RoSPA and GOV.UK both say starters go on cold coals, and that you do not add more starter once the bed is burning. Log Barn’s bullet says not to hold the firelighter while you light it. One piece on kindling is the printed dose. Two or three is what that listing suggests with no kindling. KEPLIN prints one with kindling and three for dried logs. GOV.UK’s rule of thumb for a normal cook is about 5 cm of charcoal. If the piece is the high-density Ecoblaze, reviews say a household match is often not enough. That is solved with a long lighter and air, not with petrol.

A chimney or a small pile

Weber UK puts three of Weber’s own lighter cubes on the charcoal grate, stands the chimney on top, and waits until flames show at the top before you tip. Those are Weber’s cubes, not these ASINs. One Ecoblaze review describes a chimney taking a single piece. A KEPLIN review describes four to six. Start at the low end of what your listing prints, then add a second cold piece only if the first has not caught and the fuel is still unlit. Without a chimney, keep the pile modest and open the bottom vent before you strike the match. A chimney dose is on firelighters for barbecue.

The cue before food

Food waits until the charcoal has a light grey, powdery coat. That is the Food Standards Agency’s cue, and it matches Weber’s ash coating. BBC Good Food gives 20 to 30 minutes as a usual wait. Use the ash coat you can see. Wash your hands after handling firelighters and charcoal, before you touch food. Odourless is a smell claim. It is not a reason to skip soap, or to lay food on while the block is still flaming. Wool against cubes is on wood wool firelighters vs cubes.

When it will not light

Wet charcoal and a shut vent are the usual reasons a piece dies. High-density Ecoblaze reviews describe a compressed block that will not take from a match, then burns a long time once a longer flame reaches it. Do not pour petrol, paraffin or meths onto a sulking bed, and do not add lighter fluid once it is smoking. RoSPA’s line is suitable firelighters, never petrol or paraffin. If flames reach a fence, a shed or the house, leave and call 999. A barbecue in a tent, garage, balcony or awning is a carbon monoxide risk: fresh air, and 999 for breathing trouble, confusion or collapse.

Common questions

How many should I start with?
Use the dose printed on the box you bought. Log Barn says one on kindling, or two or three without it. KEPLIN says one with kindling and three for dried logs. Weber’s own method is three of their cubes under a chimney. Reviews in this set run from one Ecoblaze piece in a chimney to four or six KEPLIN sticks. Start low, on cold fuel, and only add another piece if nothing has caught.
When can food go on?
When the charcoal is glowing and covered in a light grey ash, and you have washed your hands. That is the Food Standards Agency’s cue. A 20 to 30 minute wait is a usual figure from BBC Good Food, not a timer for these eleven packs. Black coal with a firelighter still flaming underneath is not ready, however natural the listing sounds.
What if the piece will not light?
Dry the fuel, open a vent, and use a long lighter if a match will not catch compressed wool. High-density Ecoblaze reviews describe that pattern: slow from a match, long once it is alight. Do not reach for petrol. If the chimney never shows flame at the top, tip nothing onto the grate and start again with cold, dry fuel rather than feeding a half-lit pile.
Can I add lighter fluid after it is smoking?
No. RoSPA says never add starter once the barbecue is alight, and never use petrol or paraffin in place of a suitable firelighter. A smoking bed is already a fire. Extra fluid is how small flames become a spread to a fence or a shed. If it has gone beyond the bowl, leave and call 999.
What about a stove rather than a barbecue?
Use the same cold-fuel idea: firelighter on dry kindling, vent or door open until the log has taken, then shut down. One piece is the printed starting dose on Log Barn and KEPLIN when kindling is there. This page does not set your stove’s controls. In a smoke control area, an outdoor barbecue is allowed, and a chimney on a building needs an authorised fuel or an exempt appliance. Ask the council if you are unsure.
When do I stop and get help?
Call 999 if flames spread to a fence, a shed or the house. If someone has used a barbecue in a tent, garage or enclosed space and is short of breath, confused or collapsing, get fresh air and call 999. Do not treat another firelighter as the fix. Carbon monoxide is not a smell you can wait out in the room.
