How to prime a pressure washer suction hose

Updated: October 2026

The washer clicks, the lance spits air, and the bucket is still full. You are trying to prime a pressure washer suction hose from a container, and the usual causes in this set are air in the inlet, a wall that has gone flat, or no valve to hold the water you just poured in. This page is the sequence for a washer the manual allows to draw, then a separate sequence for a surface pump. Prices and scores are on the [suction hose comparison](/hub/garden-watering/suction-hose). Products Compared used amazon.co.uk listings from 15 October 2026 and did not run a priming test. Prime a washer from a container

Start with the hose full, not with the motor. STIHL UK’s rainwater steps say to immerse the kit, flood it, keep a finger on the open end so the water stays in, and keep the intake off the bottom. That page limits that STIHL kit to 1 m of depth. The 1 m figure is for that kit, not every Kärcher or Bosch. A Kärcher K 4.130 GB manual tells you to fill suction hose 4.440-238, the one with a backflow valve, then screw it on and hang it in the butt. YUET reviews say the kit is not self-priming. Do not treat a jug of water as a fix for a model the manual says cannot suck.

When the hose collapses or the prime falls back

A soft wall under vacuum closes the bore, and the pump then runs on air. TOPWAYS is the concrete case: UK reviews say the three-layer hose sucks flat, even though the listing claims a check valve. If your hose does that, stop. A kink on arrival, which NAMOTEK reviewers report, blocks the bore the same way. Warm water for 1–2 hours, mentioned for a hose bent in the parcel, relaxes a packed coil. It is not a priming method. Water running back into the bucket is the missing-valve fault. WASH IT reviews say that happens because no check valve is claimed. YUET reviews say there is no non-return valve, so the hose cannot hold a pre-charge. SSEHCWAN’s bullets claim a valve; the only review does not mention it. Silt, and how long a butt lasts, are on the water butt page.

Prime a surface pump

A garden pump uses the same air problem and a different fill point. UK Flow Centre and waterpump.co.uk say to fill the suction hose, seal the threads, and look for bubbles at the outlet. Waterpump.co.uk mentions PTFE tape on those threads. Prime lost after you switch off points at the foot valve or at an air leak on the suction side. Gardena UK notes that a pressure hose on the suction side can contract. VEATON is the pump-inlet kit here: 4 m of corrugated hose, a strainer, a claimed non-return valve and fittings, not a Kärcher coupling. One reviewer cut the valve off because it let air in. Cutting it off leaves a strainer and no check. Lift still comes from the pump manual, not from a longer hose.

When to stop and get help

If the joints are tight, the hose stays round, the foot valve holds, and the pump still will not move water, stop and use a fitter or the maker’s service line. Bubbles with a clean mesh point at a joint or a valve letting air in. Leaves on the mesh are a blockage. Tighten the joint, flood the hose again, and only then restart. The buying guide separates a washer kit from a pump kit before you repeat this on the wrong inlet.

Common questions

Why take the lance off while priming?
The Kärcher K 6.50 manual says to run without the lance until water leaves the gun with no bubbles, then refit the lance. You are watching the inlet flow, not washing. Husqvarna’s version disconnects the high-pressure hose from the handle for its own “about 2 minutes” step. Use the step your manual prints. Do not leave a lance on and judge the prime by spray pattern alone.
What if the hose goes flat as soon as the pump starts?
Switch off. A flattened wall is closed to water, and more dry running will not open it. TOPWAYS reviews describe that fault on a three-layer inlet. A kink left from the parcel, reported on NAMOTEK, blocks the bore before the pump even starts. A steel-helix tube is the other construction in this set; it is not a cure you can claim for a fibre-mesh kit.
What if water runs back into the bucket when you stop?
The hose has not held a prime. WASH IT and YUET reviews describe that, and neither listing claims a non-return valve. You can refill before the next start. You should not expect the hose to stay full overnight. A claimed valve that leaks air, as on one VEATON review, is a different fault from a valve that was never in the box.
How do you prime a garden pump, as distinct from a washer?
Fill the suction side, seal the threads, and confirm water at the outlet without a stream of bubbles. UK Flow Centre treats lost prime after switch-off as a foot valve or a suction-side air leak. The washer routine of removing a lance does not map onto a booster pump. VEATON is the pump kit in this set; the yellow washer kits are not its fittings.
Is a 1 m depth limit true for every machine?
No. STIHL UK states no more than 1 m for that kit. Other manuals set their own lift, and a Kärcher helpline note about a K2 tells you the motor may not draw at all unless the butt is raised. Hose length is not lift. Read the manual for the machine you own before you drop a strainer to the bottom of a deep tank.
