How to use a spiral garden hose

Updated: 23 October 2026

You have a coil on the balcony, or a box you are about to fit to the outside tap, and you want the pots watered without a hose that stays stretched across the paving. How to use a spiral garden hose comes down to three limits: the thread on a UK tap, how far you pull while the spring still wants to return, and getting the water out before a frost. This page assumes you already own a spiral, not a fabric-covered expanding sleeve. The sets we compared are on the [spiral garden hose](/hub/garden-watering/spiral-garden-hose) page. Fit it to the tap

Most UK outdoor taps are 3/4 inch BSP. Hozelock says some older taps are 1/2 inch BSP, and those need the smaller adapter. Seat the washer and tighten by hand. A second wrench on a moulded plastic nut is how the collar splits. A Lecxin review describes a tap attachment that cracked, and another says a push-fit blew off under pressure. The photo is not always the carton. Gardena’s 10 m description names threaded tap connectors, a water stop, and a sprayer, while the components field says No. Amig states a tap adapter. One Akiuhen review says the pictured tap connector was missing. If the piece that meets the tap is absent, stop. Open the tap with the gun closed and look at the joint. A weep is a washer or a size problem, not a reason to pull harder. A trigger gun is not a double check valve.

Pull only as far as it still returns

Walk the coil out only while it still wants to come back. Gardena’s 10 m listing, reference 4647-20, says maximum length needs a pull, or the hose will not return to shape. The English Garden says the same thing: do not tug the spiral dead. Lecxin claims recoil to 1/20 of the extended length, and several UK reviews say a hard stretch ends that. Amig’s bullets claim a spiral shape for storage, not a restoring force. Do not haul that hose to a fictional 10 m. Pull towards the furthest pot. If the coils are still partly stacked and the hose tugs back, stop and water. If the tube has gone almost straight and slack, you are past the spring. Mincost’s seller rule of thumb is about 7 m of usable length on a 10 m spiral. Where that shorter reach still makes sense is on the spiral hose for a balcony page.

Shut off, walk it back, drain

Close the gun or the water stop before you let go. A spiral under tension can snatch back, and the gun turns that into a swinging weight. Walk the hose back, letting each loop settle. Disconnect it from the tap. Open the gun, lift the middle of the coil so water runs to the free end, and give it a minute. You will not get every drop out. You can get the slug of water that splits a fitting. Which? says drain a hose after use and do not leave water in it over winter, because a freeze splits the tube. Lagging the tap only delays freezing at the fitting. Do not pour antifreeze into a garden coil. Akiuhen’s frost-resistant line has no temperatures. Lecxin’s −40 to 165 °F line is a listing claim, not a reason to leave the hose full.

When to stop and call someone

Stop if a connector blows off, cracks, or will not seal after you reseat the washer. Replace the fitting or the hose. Do not tape a split collar. One Gardena review reports the hose splitting straight away. That is a return, not a storage trick. If the coil no longer returns after a gentle pull, hanging it will not put the spring back. Call a plumber when the job moves into the supply: a new outside tap, a double check valve on indoor pipework, or a leak from the wall that continues after the hose is off. Choosing a 1/2 inch adapter for an old bib tap is still a DIY step if the threads are intact. If this hose was the wrong reach, length and bore are on the spiral garden hose buying guide.

Common questions

What if it will not spring back?
If you pulled it straight, the plastic memory may already be gone. Walk it into the tidiest coil you can and accept a shorter hose, or replace it. Do not hang a dead coil and expect next Sunday to restore the shape. Amig never claimed a restoring force, so a neat hand-coil is the storage that listing describes.
Should I let go and let it snap to the tap?
No. Close the gun first and walk the hose back. A coil under tension can snatch towards the bracket, and the spray gun is heavy enough to swing. Recoil is for the last few loops after you have walked the length back, not for a release from the far side of the patio.
Can it stay outside in a frost?
Not full of water. Which? says a freeze splits water left in a hose, and lagging a tap only delays freezing at the fitting. Bring the empty coil indoors if a hard frost is forecast. Do not add antifreeze.
What if the connector blows off?
Turn the tap off at once. Reseat the washer only if the threads are intact and the collar is not cracked. If the plastic has split, replace the fitting or the hose. If water still runs from the wall with the hose removed, that leak is the tap.
When is this a plumber’s job?
Fitting the connector, choosing a 1/2 inch adapter, and draining the coil are ordinary use. A plumber is the right call for a new outside tap, a double check valve on indoor pipework, or a leak that continues after the hose is off. A trigger gun does not solve backflow.
