Spiral garden hose buying guide

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are on a balcony or a small courtyard with an outside tap, a line of pots, and a title that promises 7.5 m, 10 m, or 15 m. A spiral garden hose buying guide should settle length, bore, and the tap fitting before you care which brand is cheaper. If the furthest pot is beyond a comfortable pull, or you need a hard jet, leave the category. The four amazon.co.uk coils we kept are compared on the [spiral garden hose](/hub/garden-watering/spiral-garden-hose) page. This page is the method. It does not rank a winner and it does not give the watering sequence. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What you are buying

A spiral garden hose is a plastic tube formed as a spring. Gardena’s 10 m set, reference 4647-20, states a restoring force and warns that full length needs a pull, or the hose will not return. Amig’s polypropylene hose states a spiral shape for compact storage and does not use that phrase. Lecxin and Akiuhen put expandable in the title. Their bullets still describe a coil, not a latex core inside a fabric jacket. An expandable hose grows when water pressure stretches an inner sleeve, then shrinks when you empty it. Which? treats that construction as a different type from a terrace coil. If both tiles are open, use the spiral hose vs expandable hose page. Here, assume you want the spring.

Length you will use

Stated reach and comfortable reach are different numbers. Amig’s title says the hose extends up to 7.5 m. A separate item-length field says 100 cm, and the dimensions line says 7.5 m by 0.01 m. Akiuhen states 15 m stretched and about 1 m after use. The dimensions field is 8 by 4 cm, which is not the stretched length. Gardena’s UK range also sells a 7.5 m terrace spiral, reference 18401-20, with a bracket. Capital Gardens listed that set at £39.99. It is not our amazon.co.uk row. Our Gardena row is the 10 m set 4647-20 at £39.89. If you want the bracketed 7.5 m terrace set, that is a different product page.

Bore, gun, and the tap

A 9 mm or 3/8 inch spiral is a thin pipe beside a standard garden hose. Gardena prints 9 mm in the title and 1 cm in an outside-diameter field. Amig prints 0.38 inch. UK reviews of Lecxin and Akiuhen call the bore narrow, and Akiuhen reviews say the stream is poor on a normal outside tap. The carton does not always match the photo. Gardena’s title names a sprayer, a hose connector, a water stop, and threaded tap connectors. The included-components field says No. Amig states a spray nozzle, a tap adapter, and two quick couplings. Lecxin states a 7-pattern gun. Akiuhen’s bullets name a 7-function gun and two quick couplings, while the components field says No, and one UK review says the pictured tap connector was not in the box.

When to walk away

Leave this category when the job needs volume or distance a narrow coil will not give. A sprinkler wants a fatter bore. A pressure washer is a different hose. Washing a car or a patio with a hard jet is the job BBC Gardeners’ World found frustrating on a Gardena terrace hose. A border 12 m from the tap is a conventional hose, not a spiral you yank straight. A handful of pots and no outside tap is a watering can. If you do have a tap within a comfortable pull, the best spiral garden hose page names who each set is for. Before you order, read the stated metres, any second length field, the bore, and whether a components field says No.

Common questions

Is 7.5 m enough for a balcony?
For many UK balconies, a stated 7.5 m is enough when the furthest pot is within a comfortable pull, which is often shorter than the title. Gardena sells a separate 7.5 m terrace spiral for roof gardens and balconies, with a bracket. If you must cross a deep courtyard and still have the coil spring back, 7.5 m on the box can feel short.
Why does a 10 m spiral feel shorter?
The tube is a spring. Gardena’s listing says full length needs a pull, or the hose will not return. UK reviews of set 4647-20 describe a hard stretch to 10 m, or something nearer 5–7 m if recoil still matters. Mincost’s rule of thumb is that a 10 m spiral is usable nearer 7 m. That is a seller’s estimate, not a test-rig figure. The English Garden warns against pulling until the coils disappear.
Does it fit a UK outside tap?
Hozelock says most outdoor taps are 3/4 inch BSP, and some older taps are 1/2 inch BSP. Reviews still include taps that did not fit and a push-fit that blew off. If the components field says No while the bullets list connectors, do not assume every piece in the photo is in the carton. A double check valve is the usual protection for ordinary domestic watering. A trigger gun is not that valve.
What does the maximum bar figure mean?
It is the maximum the listing prints, not the pressure of a UK mains tap and not a spray we measured. Gardena states 22 bar. Amig states 10 bar. Do not read 22 bar as a harder jet on the herbs. Reviewers of the narrow coils often describe less water at the gun, because the bore is small.
Should the box include a bracket and a water stop?
Only if that exact listing names them. The maker’s separate 7.5 m terrace set is the one sold with a bracket. Amig names a nozzle, a tap adapter, and two quick couplings, and does not mention a wall bracket. Confirm a bracket or a water stop on the ASIN you are about to open, not on a photo of a different set.
