Soaker hose vs drip irrigation

Updated: 23 October 2026

You searched for a drip hose and the amazon.co.uk title might be a porous soaker, a tape, or a tube with emitters. Soaker hose vs drip irrigation is a choice of method: a wall that weeps along its length, or points that release water at set gaps. The five products on the [soaker hose comparison](/hub/garden-watering/soaker-hose) are soakers, even where Alederways and VReder say drip hose set. Specs stay on the [buying guide](/hub/garden-watering/soaker-hose/sub/soaker-hose-buying-guide). Ban hardware stays on the [hosepipe ban](/hub/garden-watering/soaker-hose/sub/soaker-hose-hosepipe-ban) page. None of these five is a pressure-compensating drip line. Two different hoses, one confusing name

A soaker lets water out through the wall, so you get a damp strip beside the tube. A drip line lets water out through emitters, often pressure-compensated when the ground is not level. After drip hose on a title, check for emitters. Alederways and VReder list barb fittings and a porous hose, not compensating drippers. MAMIZO, B2C and Gardena are porous hoses too. A drip title does not give you slope behaviour. A soaker joins ordinary hose fittings. A drip line wants a filter and a flush.

When the soaker is the simpler tool

Use a soaker on a short, level bed where a narrow wet strip is what the plants need. The RHS suggests the hose across the roots, or lines about 30–45 cm apart, with at least 5 cm of mulch. A 15 m title suits a short bed or a greenhouse bench. One Gardena text calls the sideways spread about two inches, so do not expect a sprinkler’s width. You still need an end stop, pegs and usually a timer, and none of the five boxes includes pegs or a timer. Laying steps are on how to lay a soaker hose. The CSA guide’s advice for a leaky pipe is a 0.5 bar regulator and runs under about 25 m along the contour. That length is their guide, not a test of MAMIZO’s 30 m coil. MAMIZO’s bullet still says not to run the pipe from a very low place to a high place.

When drip line is the one that stays even

Choose pressure-compensating drip line when the ground rises or a porous wall fades along a long run. The RHS gives two litres per hour per dripper as an example, not as a figure from these listings. You add a filter, because grit blocks small outlets, and you flush the line. A soaker does not become compensating because you turn the tap down. None of these five claims pressure-compensating outlets. Run a drip line across the slope, not straight up it.

Vegetables, hedges, and the rubber caution

For a flat vegetable row, a soaker is the simpler tool if you accept a strip rather than a point at each plant, and if you accept the material beside food. The RHS treats drip-line plastics as suitable for edible plants and tells you to avoid recycled-tyre rubber seep hose on crops you eat raw. These rubber listings do not prove a food-grade compound. Gardena’s capture is PVC, which is a different material, not a licence this page can invent. A level hedge is where buyers in this set already use B2C, Alederways and MAMIZO. A hedge that climbs is the drip-line case. Use a soaker on a short, flat run you can peg and cap, and use pressure-compensating drip line when the ground rises or the run is long. A pumped multi-zone layout, or any alteration to the mains, is where an irrigation fitter takes over.

Common questions

What is the actual difference if both are called drip hose?
A soaker weeps along the wall and wets a strip. A drip line releases water at emitters, often pressure-compensated. Alederways and VReder use drip hose for a porous set with barb fittings. If the box has no emitters, you have bought a soaker.
Which one on a slope?
Pressure-compensating drip line. MAMIZO tells you not to run its pipe from very low ground to high ground, and the RHS says seep hoses are uneven on slopes. The CSA guide keeps leaky pipe under about 25 m on the contour. That is not a reason to point a soaker uphill.
Which one for a flat vegetable row?
A soaker, if the row is short and level and you want one strip rather than an emitter at each plant. Add a filter and compensating drip line if the row is long. Neither choice includes pegs or a timer in these five boxes.
Which one for a new hedge?
A soaker on a level hedge matches how buyers here use B2C, Alederways and MAMIZO. Split a long coil so the far end still weeps. If the hedge runs uphill, use drip line with compensating emitters. A 30 m title does not cancel MAMIZO’s uphill bullet.
Which one is kinder on fittings I already own?
The soaker. Porous hose joins ordinary hose fittings more easily, and these sets include tap connectors or end fittings. Drip line usually wants a filter, a pressure regulator and a flush. Those parts are not in a soaker box.
Which one for salads I will eat raw?
The RHS treats drip-line plastics as suitable for edible plants and tells you to avoid recycled-tyre rubber soaker hose on raw crops. These rubber listings do not show they are food-grade. For leaves you eat uncooked, that caution points away from an unchecked rubber title.
Will a soaker reach as far sideways as a sprinkler?
No. One Gardena review calls the spread about two inches each side. The RHS calls it a narrow wet strip. Lay the hose where the roots are, or add another run about 30–45 cm away. A sprinkler wets more leaf and loses more water doing it.
