How to set up a drip irrigation kit from an outside tap

Updated: 23 October 2026

The coil is still curled in the bag, and it is tempting to cut where you stand. How to set up a drip irrigation kit starts with the route, an end plug that fits, a flush, and a jug under the last outlet before any timer runs the day. The ten kits sit on the [irrigation system comparison](/hub/garden-watering/irrigation-system). If the coil is already shorter than the path, use the [drip irrigation kit buying guide](/hub/garden-watering/irrigation-system/sub/irrigation-system-buying-guide) before you cut. Peter F. used the 19 October 2026 listings and did not time an install. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Before any tube is cut

Walk from the outside tap to the last pot, including the corner of the house and the greenhouse door. A 15 m kit that crosses 12 m of path has little left for the bench. Cutting first wastes the only continuous run. Unroll the tube while it is warm. Decide the outlet before you punch a hole. Drippers and mist nozzles want separate lines. MUXHEL lists both, and that is still one box of parts. The choice is on the drip irrigation or mist spray page. Open only the nozzles you need. A long 4 mm or 1/4 inch spur loses flow when every head is open.

From the tap to the first tee

Start at the tap. Backflow protection belongs there. None of these ten boxes list a double check valve, so the kit does not replace the device on the tap. Water Irrigation’s order is protection, then a timer if you use one, then a filter and a pressure reducer, then the supply tube. They suggest about 1.5 bar because tap pressure is often higher. Suyeah prints 10 kilopascals, Forever Speed 80 psi, and QXZYJQL 3 bar. Without a reducer, test with the tap barely open. Stop for a plumber or the water company for a new tap, a buried pipe, an unattended solenoid, a pump over 12 litres per minute, or a fertiliser injector. In England and Wales, regulation 5 requires notice before a system that is not hand-operated. Do not test against a live temporary use ban.

Lay, cut and flush

Lay the tube on the measured route and cut square. A crushed cut is how a push-fit joint slips off. LYMIN’s listing points to hot water for a stubborn barb: warm the tube end, push it fully home, and let it cool. Elderoaki reviewers found end stoppers that did not fit. Check the plug before you close the line. Flush before the nozzles go on. Run a little water through the open pipe until grit from the cut is gone, then fit the outlets and the end. If you nozzle first, the near head catches the dirt. Do not force a joint that will not seat. Forever Speed reviews show the far end staying dry while near heads spray. Shut the spare heads, and keep mist and drippers on separate runs.

Test, then store

Turn the tap by hand, with no timer yet. A jug under the first outlet and a jug under the last should both collect water in the same short test, with the tap only partly open. These listings do not share one measured dose, so do not copy a litre figure from another brand. If the far jug stays empty, shut nozzles and shorten a 4 mm run. Add the timer only after that test. Where you have a regulator, Which? places it between the timer and the pipe. None of these kits include the clock. Before frost, take the system off the tap. Water left in a push-fit joint splits the plastic. Drain the line and keep the small parts together.

Common questions

What do I attach to the tap first?
Fit the backflow device on the outside tap, then the timer if you use one, then a filter and a pressure reducer if you have them, then the kit’s connector. These boxes do not list a double check valve. Water Regs UK puts that duty at the hose-union tap. If the tap has nothing suitable, upgrade it before you lay tube.
Should I unroll the pipe in the sun?
Yes, if the coil is stiff. Leave it in the sun and lay it on the measured route before you cut. Cold tube holds the curve from the bag and pulls joints sideways. Warming one end in hot water, as LYMIN suggests for a barb, does not stretch a 15 m coil into a 30 m one.
When do I flush?
Flush after the tube is in place and before the nozzles go on. Run water through the open pipe so cuttings leave at the end, then fit the outlets and the end plug. If every head goes on first, the near nozzles trap the grit. Forever Speed reviews describe a dry far end when too many heads are open. Flush again after a recut, then start the jug test.
How do I know the far end is getting water?
Put a jug under the first outlet and another under the last, with the tap turned by hand and no timer running. Both should collect water in the same short test. There is no single litre figure for these ten kits. If the far jug stays empty, shut nozzles, check the end plug, and shorten a 4 mm run. The RHS figure of 2 litres per hour is a general example, not a score for this box.
Can I put misters and drippers on the same line?
Keep them on separate lines. The more open head takes the water. Hozelock’s layout notes say not to mix drippers and micro-jets on one line, and that split applies to these mixed boxes. MUXHEL can include both. Use them as two jobs, or blank the heads you are not using today.
Do I leave it outside in winter?
Take it off the tap before frost. Which? gives that advice, because a coil left connected splits at the joints. Drain the tube and keep nozzles and plugs together. Flush again in spring before you fit every head. A live hosepipe ban still applies on the day you reconnect, including for a drip or mist kit on the mains.
