Drip irrigation or mist spray: which outlet to use

Updated: 23 October 2026

The amazon.co.uk title says drip irrigation, and the photo shows a 360 degree nozzle. Drip irrigation or mist spray decides whether water lands on the compost or on the leaves. In this set, several boxes are the second kind even when the name says drip. Choose drip when compost should be wet and leaves dry, the usual case for tomatoes. Choose mist for seedlings or a short cooling burst. Do not run both on one open line. Prices are on the [irrigation system comparison](/hub/garden-watering/irrigation-system). Two different outlets

A dripper delivers water slowly at one point. The Royal Horticultural Society describes that as watering the root zone, and gives about 2 litres per hour as a public example. That figure is not a lab result for these nozzles, and it should not be copied onto a timer. A mist nozzle, including a 360 degree bendable head, throws a spray or a fan. It wets leaves, a tray, and often the path. Turning it down does not make it a dripper. Greenhouse Stores puts drip near the roots and mist on some propagation. Do not mix them on one line. Harvst and Hozelock both keep misters apart from drippers, because the more open head takes the flow. A 70% saving line on Nuoyiman is advertising copy, not a measurement.

When drip is the right tool

Use drip when the compost should be wet and the leaves dry. Tomatoes, cucumbers and pots on a greenhouse bench are the usual cases. Path and ventilation sit on the greenhouse irrigation system page. The RHS links uneven watering with blossom end rot. Drip can steady the roots. It is not a cure. The fitting shape is a wider main and a short thin spur. LYMIN’s split, about 12 m of 1/2 inch and about 60 m of 1/4 inch, is that layout. A long 4 mm coil with many open drippers drops the far-end flow. These boxes omit a pressure reducer. Water Irrigation’s 1.5 bar note is install advice, not a stamp on every ASIN. If the outlet word is mist, you need a different kit. Bore and missing parts are on the drip irrigation kit buying guide.

When mist is the right tool

Use mist for seed trays or a short burst on a greenhouse path. Water Irrigation treats overhead mist as a seedling and cooling tool. An hour on cropping tomatoes wets leaves in still air, which Greenhouse Stores flags as a disease risk. Keep the mist line to a modest number of heads, with the tap only partly open. QXZYJQL prints 3 bar and lists 16 mist nozzles. A UK review describes heads blowing off, so more pressure is the wrong cure. Suyeah prints a maximum of 10 kilopascals. Leave both figures as printed. Add a clock only after a manual test, in the order on the how to set up a drip irrigation kit page. None of the ten kits include that clock. MUXHEL lists 20 drippers and 50 mist nozzles. That is a mixed bag, not a reason to run both at once.

What these listings actually say

Read the style field before the title. Suyeah says atomisation, on a 49.21 ft coil, and a UK review calls it spray. Kalolary’s style field is also atomisation, at £15.99 with a small review count. QXZYJQL is sold with 16 mist nozzles and a printed 3 bar. Those three are mist kits for this decision, whatever the title’s first word is. MUXHEL lists 20 drippers and 50 mist nozzles on 50 m of 4 mm PVC, and it has no star line. Use one outlet on the line you are testing, and blank the other. Pipihome’s brass head can still sprinkle when the flow is heavier. A wide pipe on LYMIN or Elderoaki can feed either outlet, so confirm the heads in the bag. A mist kit is not a hosepipe-ban exemption. Southern Water’s July 2025 notice treats dripper hoses and automatic irrigation as hosepipe uses.

Common questions

What does a 360 degree bendable nozzle actually do?
It sprays. A 360 degree bendable nozzle throws a circle or a fan, and a twist often changes a fine mist into a heavier sprinkle. Water lands on leaves, seed compost and the path. Turning it down does not make a point-source dripper. That pattern suits a seed tray for a short time. On fruiting tomatoes it wets the foliage.
Can I use both in one kit?
You can own both and still run them as separate jobs. MUXHEL’s bullets include 20 drippers and 50 mist nozzles. Fit one type today and blank the other. Harvst puts drippers and sprayers on different zones because they want different pressure. On one open pipe the thirstier head takes the flow.
Which is better for tomatoes?
Drip is the better outlet, because the compost should be wet and the leaves dry. Greenhouse Stores treats overhead mist as propagation, and wet foliage in a closed house raises disease pressure. The RHS links uneven watering with blossom end rot, which argues for a steady root supply and for still looking at the plants. Mist is a poor daily system for a cropping row.
Which is better for seed trays?
Mist is the better outlet for seed trays and a short damping-down. A fine spray can cover a tray without washing compost out of the cells, if the burst stays short. A single dripper under one cell leaves the rest dry. Move to drip when the plants are in pots and you want the leaves dry, on a separate line or after the mist heads are off.
Does brass mean it is a dripper?
Brass is a material, not an outlet type. Pipihome’s bullets describe a brass head that can go from mist to a heavier flow. Heavier can still be a sprinkle. With the tap barely open, a circle on dry paving is spray. A slow bead in one place is closer to drip. The metal does not settle it.
