Drip irrigation kit: what to check before you buy

Updated: 23 October 2026

Your outside tap is on the house wall, and the last tomato is often further than the bed looks. A drip irrigation kit on amazon.co.uk can still be a short mist coil, a long thin tube, or a two-diameter set whose wide pipe stops at about 12 metres. Check that before the [irrigation system comparison](/hub/garden-watering/irrigation-system): measure the route, see which coil is wide, match the nozzle, and buy the timer separately. What you are actually buying

A drip irrigation kit here is one small coil with push-on nozzles, or a wider main plus a thinner spur. Micro coils include Suyeah at 49.21 ft, Nuoyiman and Starrey at 100 ft of 1/4 inch, Pipihome at 30 m, MUXHEL at 50 m of 4 mm PVC, and QXZYJQL with a size field of 50 ft. Kalolary, LYMIN, Elderoaki and Forever Speed are the two-diameter kits. Drippers wet compost. Mist nozzles and 360 degree heads wet leaves and the path. Several titles say drip and still ship sprayers. Suyeah’s style field says atomisation. Settle that on the drip irrigation or mist spray page. Piece count is the weak signal. A bag can pass 200 parts by counting tees and plugs, and still leave the far plant dry.

Length and bore

Measure from the tap to the last plant, including the wall, then read the metres. About 15 m, Suyeah’s 49.21 ft, does not reach a greenhouse at the bottom of a long garden if the path uses most of the coil. If the tap is beside the bed, that short coil can be enough. A long 4 mm or 1/4 inch coil loses flow once many nozzles are open. The wider main, 1/2 inch or 8/12, has to reach the bed. On these listings 4/7 is the thin coil and 8/12 is the wider one. Forever Speed’s 60 m coil is the thin 4/7 and its 15 m coil is the 8/12. LYMIN and Elderoaki print about 12 m of 1/2 inch with about 60 m of 1/4 inch. If that wide section stops short, the thin coil is not a second main.

What the box does not contain

None of the ten listings put a timer in the included-components line. Automatic on the title describes the idea. Buyers who wanted timed watering on Suyeah added a clock themselves. Fit it only after a manual test, in the order on the how to set up a drip irrigation kit page. A timer that repeats a dry far end is the same fault on a schedule. A pressure reducer, a filter and a double check valve are also absent. Water Irrigation says micro-drip likes about 1.5 bar and a reducer, because outside-tap pressure is usually higher. That figure is their advice, not a rating on Suyeah, which prints a maximum of 10 kilopascals. Forever Speed prints 80 psi and QXZYJQL prints 3 bar. We have not put a gauge on those lines.

Rules before you connect the mains

In England and Wales, regulation 5 of the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 requires notice before a garden watering system that is not designed to be operated by hand. If the water company does not reply within ten working days, consent is deemed. A screw-on kit you open by hand sits on a grey edge. Scotland and Northern Ireland use their own fittings rules. The kit is not backflow protection. Water Regs UK puts that device on the hose-union tap. A hosepipe ban is separate, under section 76 of the Water Industry Act 1991. Southern Water’s July 2025 notice names dripper hoses and automatic irrigation with hosepipes, and words the fine as not exceeding £1,000. South West Water covers mains irrigation and leaves a water butt outside that ban. A mist nozzle is not an exemption. Check the notice for your postcode on the day.

Common questions

How long a kit do I need if the tap is on the house wall?
Measure the hose path from the tap to the last plant, including the wall and the greenhouse door. Bed length understates the job. A coil of about 15 m, such as Suyeah’s 49.21 ft, can be spent before a distant greenhouse. A two-diameter kit helps only if the wider section covers that path. Forever Speed’s wide 8/12 coil is 15 m, so the long number is still a short reach.
Does automatic mean a timer is in the box?
On these ten listings, automatic does not mean a timer is in the box. None print one in the included-components line. Add the timer after you have seen water at the last outlet with the tap turned by hand. Which? treats the timer and the adjustable outlets as different parts.
What is the difference between 4/7 and 8/12?
On these kits, 4/7 is the thin coil and 8/12 is the wider main, the usual inside and outside millimetre pair. Forever Speed’s 60 m coil is the 4/7 and its 15 m coil is the 8/12. The longer number is the thin bore. On LYMIN or Elderoaki, check that the half-inch section is the one that reaches the plants.
Can I run a mains kit from a water butt?
These kits are arranged for an outside tap. The Royal Horticultural Society says a water butt needs a pump before it can give hose pressure. Which? measured about 200 to 600 ml per dripper per day on solar butt kits, a slower product than a mains coil. Elderoaki’s Solar Powered field is not a panel in the box.
Do I have to tell the water company?
In England and Wales, give notice under regulation 5 before a garden system that is not designed to be operated by hand. No reply within ten working days means consent is deemed. A screw-on kit you open yourself is a grey edge. A new tap, buried pipe, solenoid, pump over 12 litres per minute, or a fertiliser injector is the point to stop. Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own rules.
