Which Hunter Hydrawise controller

Updated: 23 October 2026

The replacement has to drive the 24 V solenoids already wired to your lawn valves. Hydrawise is Hunter's cloud software on three products. Which Hunter Hydrawise controller you choose depends on how many valves you have, whether the app must work on the first evening, and whether the plate says 230 V. A bare X2 joins the cloud only after a WAND. A Pro-HC is a fixed count with Wi-Fi in the cabinet. An HPC starts at four stations and grows with modules. Count stations before you compare prices

A station is one valve output. A programme is a schedule that can water several stations in turn. If you treat Hunter's six programmes as six zones, you order a face that cannot open the bed you already planted. Walk the wires before you sort by price. In this set the X2 appears as a 4-station controller at £122.33 and an 8-station controller at £167.00, both without a WAND. Hunter's chart also lists X2 sizes at 6 and 14 stations. The Pro-HC comes as 6, 12 or 24 stations. Seven valves are a 12-station Pro-HC, because Hunter does not list an 8-station Pro-HC. The £122.33 X2 is a local dial at the lowest shelf price here.

Wi-Fi in the box or a WAND later

Pro-HC and HPC controllers in these listings have Wi-Fi in the cabinet. The X2 stays offline until you fit a WAND, which Hunter sells separately, even when a title prints Hydrawise. Two SPW bundles include the module at £262.22 and £312.94, and neither shows a star line. Before the WAND, Hunter gives the X2 three programmes and four start times. With the module fitted, Hunter enables six start times and disables the dial while Wi-Fi is on, so the schedule moves to the app. Hydrawise Home is $0 a year for up to three controllers. If the app has to work the day you fit the cabinet, buy a Pro-HC or an HPC.

Flow alerts and extra zones

A leak alert needs an HC flow meter and a controller that can read one. Hunter's chart gives that to the Pro-HC and the HPC, each with two sensor inputs. The X2, even with a WAND, sits outside the flow-meter column. What you cannot do later is clip a PCM module into a Pro-HC. The HPC starts at four stations when the garden will gain zones. Hunter's module page lists a conventional ceiling of 23 stations and a decoder path to 32. Amazon bullets on the HPC-400 rows stop at 16 zones, and these listings have no pound prices for the modules. That split is on the Pro-HC vs HPC page.

What to check on the UK listing

UK mains are 230 V, and a UK plug is BS 1363. Hunter's US Pro-HC page lists PHC-600, PHC-1200 and PHC-2400 as 120 VAC with a US cable. The European codes are PHC-601-E, PHC-1201-E and PHC-2401-E at 230 VAC. A blank voltage line does not prove the E code. One 6-station listing at £1,258.76 prints 120 VAC with a US cable. Refuse that supply for a British socket. Read the plate before you pay. Outdoor primary wiring stays with a qualified electrician. In England and Wales, regulation 5 of the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 covers a garden system that is not hand-operated, so you notify the undertaker. The plug check is the Hunter controller 230 V UK page. One outside tap belongs with a water timer.

Common questions

Does the X2 include Wi-Fi?
The bare X2 in this set leaves Wi-Fi to a separate WAND. Hunter sells that module on its own, and the £122.33 four-station and £167.00 eight-station listings follow that split. Bundles branded SPW at £262.22 and £312.94 include the module, though neither has a star line on amazon.co.uk. Until the module is fitted you run the dial locally.
Should I buy 6 zones or 12?
Count the valve wires, then take the smallest Pro-HC that covers them. Six valves match the £257 or £266 rows in this set. Seven to twelve valves match a 12-station Pro-HC, because Hunter does not list an 8-station model in that family. This amazon set has no 24-station listing. Spare terminals on a 12-station door are a normal result when you have nine valves.
When is the HPC worth it over a fixed Pro-HC?
The HPC fits when you may add stations later, because a Pro-HC will not take a PCM module. An HPC-400 starts at four zones, at about £226 to £239 here, and Hunter's module page takes conventional wiring to 23 stations. The amazon bullets say up to 16, so 16 is the claim on that listing and 23 is Hunter's module-page ceiling. Pound prices for the modules are not in these listings.
Do I need a flow meter on day one?
You need an HC flow meter when you want leak alerts. The Pro-HC and the HPC can take one, on Hunter's chart, and the meter is a separate part. The X2 stays outside that column even after a WAND. A rain or freeze sensor is extra hardware too. If you are only moving the old weekly programme onto a new face, you can leave the meter off until a leak is the problem you want to see.
What if the title says Hydrawise but the bullet says the WAND is separate?
Follow the bullet, and Hunter's WAND page. The software name in the title is how these dial controllers are marketed once a module can be added. It is not a packing list. Set a bare X2 price next to a Pro-HC only after you have added the cost of the WAND, or after you have decided the dial will run offline for now.
