How to set a Gardena sprinkler

How to set a Gardena sprinkler is the range, the width and one side, then the filter and the nozzles, before you decide the head is faulty. Set range and width before the tap is fully open

Open the tap a quarter turn first. A full-bore start on the longest throw will soak the path before you have seen the pattern. Set a smaller rectangle than you think you need, watch one sweep, then lengthen it. On an AquaZoom compact, Gardena's UK page gives range 3–18 m, width 3–12 m and flow on the sprinkler. The amazon.co.uk listing also says range 3 to a maximum of 12 m in one bullet. Set the slider and measure the wet edge. The AquaZoom M uses the same idea at width 3–14 m, range 3–18 m, and weighs 800 g. An Aqua S runs from 7 m to 17 m, and its width is a maximum of 13 m, not a control you wind down to 3 m. Water one side when a path is in the way

One-side watering saves the paving when the head sits near an edge. Gardena's UK pages for the AquaZoom compact and the AquaZoom M both describe watering to the left or the right. The Aqua M UK page offers one side too, on a bar whose width stays at a maximum of 14 m. Stand the head on the grass and point the closed side at the house. One side, with the range kept short for the first minute, keeps the pass on the turf. An Aqua S has no published minimum width, so you place the bar so the maximum falls on grass, or you move it twice. Flow on AquaZoom is a dial on the head. Clear the filter and the nozzles

A jet that looks like a dribble is often lime or grit, and the two families are cleaned differently. On the Aqua S, Gardena's UK page puts a cleaning needle in the screw cap, and the metal inlet filter comes off by twisting the connection. The Aqua M and Aqua L use that same needle. Clear one hole, then put the needle back in the cap. AquaZoom nozzles are soft plastic. Gardena's UK pages say you wipe them with a finger and rinse the filter under a tap. Do not push a pin, the Aqua needle or a paperclip into those holes. A poked nozzle throws a lance, and the width slider cannot undo that.

If it still will not sweep

Once the pattern is smaller, the filter is rinsed and the nozzles are cleared the way that family allows, a bar that sits still is no longer a slider problem. Look for a kink in the first metre of hose, a half-closed tap and a washer spraying sideways. If the throw is still a short fan, the limit is pressure in the hose. That case is Gardena sprinkler low water pressure. A longer bar on the same tap will not make the arm travel further. On a new lawn, the RHS says you can stop at about 13 mm in an open jam jar. That jar is not a rule for an established brown lawn, and it is not a reason to ignore a hosepipe restriction.

Common questions

How do I set the range on an AquaZoom?
Use the range slider, start shorter than the grass, and open the tap only part way. On the UK compact page the range is 3–18 m and the width is 3–12 m. The amazon.co.uk listing also says 3 to max. 12 m in one bullet, so measure the wet edge before you lengthen it.
How do I stop water hitting one side only?
Switch on the one-side control so the sweep stays on the grass, or move the head. AquaZoom compact, AquaZoom M and the Aqua M UK page all describe one-side watering. The Aqua S width is a maximum of 13 m, so placement does the work the slider will not.
Where is the cleaning needle on an Aqua S, M, or L?
On the Aqua S it sits in the screw cap at the end of the bar. Use it on the Aqua nozzles, then return it to the cap. The Aqua M and Aqua L are the same needle-cleaned family. Do not use that needle on AquaZoom soft nozzles.
How do I clean soft AquaZoom nozzles?
Wipe them with a finger, as Gardena's UK compact and AquaZoom M pages describe, and rinse the inlet filter under a tap. A pin or the Aqua needle will tear the soft plastic and leave a jet. If a hole stays blocked after a finger wipe, stop.
How do I rinse the inlet filter?
Twist the connection off, flush the metal filter under a tap, and refit it with the washer in place. Do this before the first spray of the season and again if the pattern goes stringy. A filter full of grit looks like low pressure. It is not the same fault as a weak mains supply.
The bar will not sweep. Is that a setting?
Check range and one side first, then the kink, the washer and the filter. A head set to full width on a weak tap can look stuck when it is only starved. If the arm still will not travel, treat it as pressure. Another twist of the width slider will not create flow.
