How to use a dirty water pump

Updated: 22 October 2026

How to use a dirty water pump, on a first run, is mostly about where it sits, how the float moves, and when you unplug it. Dry running, a trapped float and a kinked layflat hose are the three faults in UK reviews of this set. The [Einhell dirty water pump comparison](/hub/garden-watering/einhell-dirty-water-pump) ranks the listings. This page stays with the first run. Peter F. used Einhell UK guidance, Electrical Safety First and amazon.co.uk review themes from 19 October 2026. We did not run the pumps in a lab. Before it goes in the water

Start with the supply, not the impeller. A mains pump needs a dry BS 1363 plug and a socket with 30 mA RCD protection. Electrical Safety First says to use an RCD, to uncoil an outdoor lead fully, and to unplug before you clear a blockage. A two-pin plug goes back. Do not cut it off. The GC-DP 3325 listing prints 120 V against Einhell’s 230 V family data, so read the plate before the first dip. The hose is usually still to buy. You need layflat or reinforced hose that matches the adapter, plus clips that will not blow off. Keep the open end where the water is allowed to go. Cool a hot tub below 35 °C. Einhell’s published maximum on the GC-DP 7835 is 35 °C.

Float and the first minutes

Put the pump on the lowest hard point you can reach, upright, with the intake clear of silt if you can. Einhell sets the float with the free length of cable. Too short, or caught on a wall, a step or its own chain, the pump runs on or never starts. Continuous mode keeps the switch on. Use it only while you are standing there, and switch off when the intake gulps air. If the housing smells hot, unplug it and leave it to cool. Do not open the impeller with the lead still live. On a 1 mm flat-suction setting, use a hard, level base. A soft liner can seal the intake.

When the flow is only a trickle

A trickle usually means head, a kink or a blocked outlet, in that order. Near maximum head the flow collapses, so an 8 m GC-DP 7835 can look feeble at the top of a long hose while the motor is still running. Re-check that lift on the buying guide. Walk the hose before you blame the head. Layflat kinks at the rim of a tub and at a step, and a kink heats water trapped in the housing. Take it out with the pump switched off. If the outlet is full of stones, unplug before you put a hand near it.

Water left at the end

When the float switches off, a film of water is normal. Ordinary models leave roughly 20 mm to 90 mm. GC-DP 3325 reviewers describe the last 20–30 mm. That remainder is the intake height, not a failed pump. The 1 mm claim on the LL models applies on a hard, flat base with flat suction selected. Do not lock the float and walk away. A repeating flood, water around a consumer unit, or anything near a metre deep is no longer a first-run problem. Use the basement page, and call an electrician before you energise a circuit that has been under water.

Common questions

Where does the pump sit?
On the lowest hard point, upright, with the intake off the worst of the silt if you can place it that way. A flat-suction mode that claims about 1 mm needs a hard, level base, not a soft pond liner. Give the float room to rise and fall without touching a wall. If the only low point is a pile of stones, move them before you lower the pump.
How do I set the float?
Einhell’s method is the free length of cable, which sets how high the water must rise before the switch trips. Too short, and the float cannot swing. Caught on a chain or a brick, the pump either runs dry or never starts. Test the swing by hand with the plug out. Use continuous mode only while you watch, and switch off as soon as the intake takes air.
Can I lock the float and leave?
No. Locking the float is continuous mode, and Einhell warns that the pump must not run dry in that mode. Standing beside it for the last shallow water on a hard base is reasonable. Leaving it while you answer the door is how the motor overheats. If it stops and the housing is hot, unplug it and let it cool before you look for a blockage.
Why is water still on the floor?
The intake sits above the floor on a normal dirty-water pump. About 20 mm to 90 mm left behind is the usual band here, and 20–30 mm is what GC-DP 3325 reviewers describe. A 1 mm claim applies to the LL flat-suction models on a hard, level surface. Mop the film if you need it gone. Do not dry-run the pump to chase it.
When do I stop and call someone?
Unplug and stop if the motor smells hot, if the circuit has been under water, or if you would have to stand in deep floodwater to place the pump. GOV.UK treats about a metre of water as a reason to speak to a structural engineer. An electrician should check a flooded installation before you use an electric pump. A cellar that refills every winter needs a designed sump.
