Booster pump water regulations UK

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have a surface pump and a supply pipe, a loft cistern, or a rainwater tank that sometimes gets a mains top-up. Booster pump water regulations UK are the reason to stop before any joint is cut. A pump drawing more than 12 litres a minute, connected directly or indirectly to a supply pipe, needs notice to the water company first. Every listing on the [domestic water pump comparison](/hub/garden-watering/domestic-water-pump) states a maximum above that line. Peter F., editor for DIY & tools, read those listings on 21 October 2026. There is no laboratory test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

The 12 litre line

In England and Wales the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999, regulation 5, require notice before a pump drawing more than 12 litres a minute, connected directly or indirectly to a supply pipe. If the undertaker does not answer, consent is deemed after ten working days. The five stated flows all sit above that line: 20, 25, about 33, about 58 and 76. A sealed rainwater tank with no mains connection is a different sentence, until a top-up exists.

Direct mains is a different product

Waterpump.co.uk say a normal booster does not go straight on the mains. The route they describe is a break tank and then the pump. Anglian Pumping limit that inline class to 12 litres a minute. Schedule 2 paragraph 15 is the backflow duty. A check valve does not perform it. Flow matching is on the domestic water pump buying guide, and which listing can suck from a butt is on the best domestic water pump page.

England and Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland

Notice goes to the company that supplies that property. Scotland’s byelaw 5 material includes a pump drawing more than 12 litres a minute, and a separate tick for rainwater harvesting. Northern Ireland’s 2009 regulations include the pump line and rainwater harvesting. None of these five shows WRAS, Kiwa Regulation 4 or NSF Reg4. A mains top-up on the water pump for a rainwater tank job uses the notice for the country the house is in.

What you still need a person for

The KATSU 260 W comes without a plug on a 220 V flex. Fitting a BS 1363 plug is electrician’s work. This page has no wiring sequence. Call a plumber when the pump would join a supply pipe, a combi boiler or an unvented cylinder, or when rainwater and mains can meet. If the pump has tripped, flooded a room, or will not stop, leave it isolated. Stated flow is not permission to install the pump on a supply pipe.

Common questions

Do I have to tell the water company before I fit this pump?
In England and Wales, regulation 5 requires notice before a pump drawing more than 12 litres a minute that connects directly or indirectly to a supply pipe. Every listing here states more than that: 20, 25, about 33, about 58 or 76 litres a minute. Scotland and Northern Ireland use their own lines at the same threshold. A sealed rainwater tank with no mains connection is a different case. A mains top-up brings the notice back.
Does the 12 litre rule apply if the pump is on a tank, not on the rising main?
It can. The regulation says directly or indirectly. Installer Online reads that as including a pump on a pipe fed from a cistern. A loft tank filled from the mains does not exempt the pump if it can draw more than 12 litres a minute. A rainwater tank with no supply pipe in the circuit sits outside that sentence, until someone adds a mains top-up.
Can I put the KATSU straight on the mains?
Waterpump.co.uk say a normal booster needs a break tank. The KATSU 260 W states 20 litres a minute and the KATSU 150 W about 33, both above the 12 litre inline class in Salamander’s HomeBoost brochure. The 150 W live listing says the pump is not suitable for drinking water, and neither shows WRAS. Putting either pump on the rising main is the installation those sources warn against.
Is a break tank the same as a loft tank I already have?
A loft cistern filled from the mains is still an indirect connection, so the notice can apply to a pump downstream of it. A break tank, in the booster brochures, keeps the pump off the rising main. For rainwater, Water Regs UK want a Type AA or AB air gap, at least 20 mm or twice the bore. An existing loft tank is not automatically that air gap. Ask which vessel you actually have before the pump is fitted.
What is different in Scotland and Northern Ireland?
Scottish Water’s byelaw 5 material includes the pump above 12 litres a minute and a separate tick for rainwater harvesting. Northern Ireland’s 2009 regulations add a pump delivery pipe from a supply pipe, and rainwater harvesting. NI Water say WRAS, Kiwa Regulation 4 or NSF Reg4 can show an appropriate standard, and that selling a fitting is not the same as installing it. England and Wales use regulation 5, including deemed consent after ten working days.
What if the undertaker does not reply?
In England and Wales, regulation 5 says consent is deemed after ten working days if the undertaker has not answered. Count working days, keep the notice, and do not start on day two. Deemed consent is not a waiver of the backflow duty in Schedule 2. Do not copy the ten-day English rule onto a Scottish Water or NI Water form unless that form says so.
Who fits a pump that arrived without a plug?
An electrician fits a BS 1363 plug to a bare 220 V flex. The KATSU 260 W listing says no plug is supplied. This page does not describe the wiring. A plumber is the person for a supply pipe, a combi, an unvented cylinder, or a place where rainwater and mains could meet. If the pump has tripped or flooded, leave it isolated until that visit.
