Circular vs oscillating sprinkler

Updated: 22 October 2026

Most back gardens in Britain are rectangles, and a circular sprinkler still draws a circle. That mismatch is the whole decision. An oscillating bar sweeps a rectangle. A circular head, whether it clicks or spins, waters a disc or a slice of a disc. If you have not bought either yet, choose the shape before you compare stars. Peter F. updated this page on 22 October 2026. The [circular sprinkler comparison](/hub/garden-watering/circular-sprinkler) only ranks circular heads. What each one waters

Stand at the back door and look at the grass, not at the hose reel. A circular head in the middle of the lawn covers a round patch. The four corners stay dry unless you move the head, or you set it so far that the spray crosses the path, the fence, and the neighbour’s washing. A sector from a corner covers a slice. It still has a curved edge. It does not fill a 4 m by 12 m strip in one pass. An oscillating sprinkler is a bar of jets that swings left and right. The wetted patch is a rectangle, or a part of one if the swing is limited.

When a circle is the right purchase

Buy a circular head when the ground is open, irregular, or round, or when you need one long throw from a corner. A roughly circular lawn under about 80 m² is the Hozelock 79 m² dial or a cheap rotary, not a 450 m² claim. A large open lawn is where the GRÜNTEK spike’s maximum of 452 m², or a metal impact sled, is the shape that matches, and you still move the head for the corners. A sector is the circular trick that saves a fence. STYDDI and FANHAO list 20° to 360°. The GRÜNTEK spike lists 30° to 360°. Set in a corner, a quarter-circle keeps a lot of water on the grass. It does not become a rectangle. FANHAO’s Amazon style field says Oscillating. The title and the arc bullets are an impact head on a metal sled. That field is a bad attribute. It is not a reason to treat the FANHAO as the rectangular tool on this page. If the lawn is open and you want a named pick inside the circular set, use best circular sprinkler. If you are still choosing type, base, and a realistic area, use the circular sprinkler buying guide.

When an oscillating bar is the right purchase

Buy an oscillating bar when the lawn is a rectangle and an edge needs protecting: a path, a bed of annuals, a newly painted fence, a neighbour’s window. Masseys DIY is explicit that a round head reaches further and then either misses corners or wets the path. Leave this category for that purchase. The comparison table you came from does not contain an oscillating bar you should buy from these files. A long narrow plot, the sort of 3 m by 15 m strip beside a terrace, is the case where a circle is the expensive mistake. If the only grass is the rectangle, the bar is the purchase and the circular listing can wait. Setup of a head you already own stays on how to set a circular sprinkler.

Reach, wind, and new seed

Reach is where a circle earns its place. Easy Garden Irrigation talks about impact throw of roughly 6 m to 15 m, depending on the head and the pressure. In a breeze the heavier drops hold their line better than a bar’s finer fan, which can drift onto the path. Keep an impact head for a large open lawn on a windy site, and keep the bar for a sheltered rectangle. If the lawn is a rectangle with an edge you must keep dry, buy an oscillating bar and leave this category. If the ground is open, irregular, or you need a sector from a corner and a longer throw, buy a circular head and accept the corners or move the sprinkler. When you are unsure, follow Masseys and choose the oscillating bar.

Common questions

Will a circular sprinkler water a rectangle evenly?
Not in one position. The wetted shape is a circle or a sector. Corners outside that curve stay dry, and anything inside the curve that is not grass gets wet. Moving the head fills the corners and also risks the path. A rectangle with a path on one side is an oscillating bar.
Which one reaches further?
In this circular set the printed extremes run from the Hozelock dial at 79 m², about 10 m across, up to the GRÜNTEK spike’s maximum of 452 m². Impact guides talk about throws of roughly 6–15 m. Hozelock’s rectangular Plus maxima are 180, 200, and 260 m². Further on paper is not further on a long hose, and further is useless if the extra distance is the patio.
Are oscillating sprinklers gentler on seed?
A swinging fan is gentler than a hard impact jet. An impact head with the diffuser screw set for a fine spray is closer to that fan. For a new lawn, measure about 13 mm in a jar whichever shape you use. For an established lawn, the RHS advice is to leave it.
Are the oscillating bars from the saved listings in this comparison?
No. Two WASH IT! oscillating listings were removed because they are bars, not circles. Do not reconstruct them as recommendations from this folder. Buy a rectangular sprinkler from a range that states a rectangle, such as Hozelock’s Plus models, and read that listing’s own maximum.
Do the printed areas survive a 30 m hose?
Both shapes shrink. Masseys DIY says hose length and a narrow bore reduce the area you actually see. Treat 452 m² and 260 m² as manufacturer or listing maxima. If the pattern looks tired at the far end of a long half-inch hose, the hose is part of the tool, not a fault in the shape you chose.
