Gardena loppers buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are in front of a shrub that has outgrown the secateurs, and the page seems to offer one Gardena lopper that cuts up to 50 mm. That line is a ceiling on the brand hub, not the diameter on every listing. A Gardena loppers buying guide starts with the wood, then the millimetres on that listing, then reach and weight, then whether a gear is named, and only then the warranty year. The [Gardena loppers comparison](/hub/garden-tree-and-hedge-shears/gardena-loppers) keeps the price table. Prices are amazon.co.uk snapshots from 20 October 2026. Start with the wood, not the price

Gardena's UK lopper hub assigns a bypass, two blades passing each other, to fresh green wood, and an anvil to hard, dry wood. If the stem is still alive, open the EasyCut L or a TeleCut Pro. If it is dead or dry, open the SmartCut, the only anvil here. A cheaper bypass still misses the job if you needed the anvil, and a dearer anvil still crushes living tissue if the shrub is green. This year's green philadelphus and last year's grey stub are two tools. The ratchet helps you close on hard wood. It does not turn an anvil into a clean live cut.

Read the millimetres on that listing

EasyCut L and the SmartCut both state 45 mm. Both TeleCut Pro listings state 50 mm. The SlimCut's cutting-width field states 28 mm, and the title prints no millimetre figure. A hub line of up to 50 mm fits the TeleCuts and not the SlimCut. The SmartCut's four-stage ratchet and the SlimCut's 1:12 and 1:6 gears change how hard you squeeze. They do not add millimetres. A stem that will not sit in the jaw, or that makes the tool twist, is past the stated cut, and a saw takes over. Newer amazon.co.uk model fields often end in -88. Gardena's pages often use -20. Treat them as one family only where the name, the head and the diameter agree.

Match reach and weight to where you stand

The EasyCut L's size field says 68 cm and the item weight is 1.02 kg. That is a chest-height bypass, with no telescopic arms. If the green stem is further in, the Gardena telescopic loppers page is the next click. TeleCut Pro S lists 520–670 mm at 1.54 kg and £51.37. TeleCut Pro L lists 650–900 mm at 1.86 kg and £66.55. Both state 50 mm of green wood. The titles say 670 cm and 900 cm. Those are description errors. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, goods must match the description, so trust the millimetres. The SmartCut listing weight is 798 g against about 1.3 kg on the catalogue page. Show the amazon.co.uk figure. The SlimCut is 117 cm at 1.22 kg, a fixed narrow head, not a 45 mm anvil.

Treat gear and the warranty year as last

EasyCut L and both TeleCuts name no gear. You close them once, inside the stated millimetres. The SmartCut's ratchet takes the close in stages, which two UK reviews say can stop engaging. The SlimCut resets from 1:12 to 1:6 inside 28 mm. Only the EasyCut bullet states an extended 10-year warranty. Only the TeleCut Pro S bullet states 25 years. The Pro L, SmartCut and SlimCut bullets do not. Gardena's UK conditions, updated 31 January 2023, ask you to register within three months. Blades are wear parts and are excluded. The spare-part field is a different line, 2 years on the SlimCut, and it is not the warranty. The best Gardena loppers page assigns each listing to one job.

Common questions

Should I buy a Gardena bypass or anvil lopper?
Buy a bypass if the wood is green and living: the EasyCut L or a TeleCut Pro. Buy the SmartCut anvil if the wood is hard, dry or dead. Gardena's UK hub makes that split, and a ratchet does not move the SmartCut onto the green-wood side. A border with both is two tools, or a choice of the wood you cut most often.
What cutting diameter do these five listings actually state?
EasyCut L and the SmartCut state 45 mm. Both TeleCut Pro listings state 50 mm. The SlimCut's cutting-width field states 28 mm. There is no single Gardena diameter for all five. Up to 50 mm on the hub is the top of the range, not the SlimCut and not the EasyCut. A style line that says 4.5 cm is the same 45 mm.
Does a gear let me cut thicker than the printed millimetres?
No. The SmartCut ratchet and the SlimCut's 1:12 and 1:6 gears change the effort of the close. They do not raise the stated diameter. If the handles will not shut, or the tool twists, that stem is past the listing and a saw is next. A geared model is not a way to get a bit more than 45 mm.
Which listing states a 10-year warranty and which states 25?
Only the EasyCut L bullet states an extended 10-year warranty. Only the TeleCut Pro S bullet states 25 years. The other three bullets do not state a year. Gardena asks you to register within three months, and blades are excluded as wear. A catalogue page that says 25 years does not fill a blank bullet.
Is the spare-part field the same as the warranty?
No. Spare-part availability is a separate field. On the SlimCut it says 2 years, which is easy to misread as the warranty. On other listings it says 10 or 25 years beside a bullet that may not mention a warranty at all. The field is about parts being listed, not a free blade when the edge goes.
