Petrol earth auger buying guide

Updated: 21.10.2026

You are pricing a petrol post-hole borer for a UK garden, and the amazon.co.uk shelf in this set runs from £60.50 to £360. That figure does not say whether the bits are in the box, whether the page describes one engine, or whether a fuel ratio is printed anywhere you can follow. This petrol earth auger buying guide puts those checks in order, so a cheap listing does not pass as a kit. The six files sit on the [petrol earth auger comparison](/hub/garden-tools/petrol-earth-auger). The Products Compared editorial team read those listings and the public UK pages on 20 October 2026. Kit or powerhead

A kit you can specify names the bit diameters in a box list that agrees with the title. A UK dealer kit in this shape, such as the Sherpa STGD520 at £210 including VAT, lists 100 mm, 150 mm and 200 mm bits with the powerhead. The Donened 52 cc kit at £109.99 names three bits, an English manual, a tool kit, an extension bar, a mixing bottle, a funnel, a spare starter and goggles. The Donened 44F-A powerhead at £60.50 names the digger, a mixing bottle, English instructions and assembly accessories, and it does not name a bit diameter. The Generic page at £75.83 has no included-components list at all. Those two lower prices are powerhead money, or an unresolved page.

One engine description

Read the title, the bullets, the colour line and the attribute block as one document. The Generic listing at £145.99 says 63 cc and up to 3 hp in the title and bullets. The colour line and the model number say 52 cc and 1.98 hp. The title also says 80 cm bits, while the colour line names 4 inch, 6 inch and 8 inch bits. The £75.83 Generic page is a harder split. The bullets describe a 52 cc two-stroke at 1.8 kW and 6500 rpm, with augers up to 20 cm. The attribute block on the same amazon.co.uk file says corded electric, colour "Red 1 Battery", weight 1 kg and dimensions 10 × 10 × 10 mm. A 1 kg cube of that size cannot be a 52 cc engine, so one half of the page is the wrong product record. The Draper 30278, the Donened kit and the kyco 82 cc page each keep a single displacement.

Fuel, E10 and the numbers brands sometimes print

Buy two-stroke oil for the ratio in that model's manual. Draper Tools lists the 30278 at 40:1, and the amazon.co.uk title says that engine is E10 compatible. GOV.UK's E10 guidance tells you to check garden machinery before you fill it. Hyundai's HYEA5200X manual, a branded 52 cc kit outside this set, also prints 40:1 and a handle vibration of 18.8 m/s². It is not a specification for Donened, kyco or either Generic listing. An empty fuel line is not a reason to assume 50:1, and it is not a quiet-machine claim. Hyundai's declared 18.8 m/s² is a high handle figure beside the Health and Safety Executive's employer action value of 2.5 m/s² and limit of 5.0 m/s² A(8).

What you still have not checked

Weight belongs to one model. Amazon lists the Draper 30278 at 20.3 kg. Draper Tools lists the same model at 12.5 kg with a bit. The Donened kit lists 16.2 kg. The kyco page lists 18.1 kg. The powerhead at £60.50 has no weight in the saved listing. Diameter and handles come after the box and the engine, on their own pages. A 100/150/200 mm kit set against a wider hole chart is on the petrol auger for fence posts page. Twin handles, a one-person bullet and a four-handle claim are on the one man or two man post hole borer page. A listing passes this guide when you can name the bits, one engine, a fuel note from that manual, and a weight that belongs to the machine.

Common questions

Are the drill bits in the box?
Only when a box line names them. The Donened kit at £109.99 lists 100 mm, 150 mm and 200 mm bits with the engine. The Draper 30278 bullets name those three diameters, while the included-components line lists only the auger. The £60.50 powerhead and the £75.83 Generic page do not list bit diameters.
Is 52 cc enough, or do I need the 82 cc listing?
For a domestic fence, dealer kits in this shape are commonly about 52 cc with 100 mm, 150 mm and 200 mm bits, which is the class of the Donened kit and the Draper 51.7 cc file. The kyco listing is the 82 cc page, at £360, and its title names a 300 mm bit. Confirm the box before you treat £360 as a proved kit.
What fuel mix should I buy oil for?
Use the ratio printed for the model in your hand. For the Draper 30278, Draper Tools states 40:1. The other five listings do not print a ratio in the files we read, so the manual that arrives with the machine is the instruction.
Can I use E10?
The Draper 30278 listing says the engine is E10 compatible, and that is the only kept file that states it. GOV.UK tells you to check garden machinery before you use E10. Where a listing is silent, the manual decides. The Draper sentence does not transfer to Donened, kyco or the Generic pages.
Why do two weights exist for the Draper?
Amazon states 20.3 kg for the 30278. The manufacturer page for that model states 12.5 kg with a bit. Both lines are published, and they do not match, so neither figure should stand alone as the weight you will carry.
What is missing if the listing has no vibration figure?
You have no declared handle vibration to set against a day's work. None of the six kept listings publishes one. Employer action and limit values from the Health and Safety Executive are 2.5 and 5.0 m/s² A(8). A blank listing is not a low figure.
