Broom for patio leaves

Updated: 21.10.2026

Wet oak leaves on a stone path are a slip under your shoes, and the same leaves left thick on a lawn smother the grass. A broom for patio leaves is the stiff outdoor broom you use on the route people walk, not a tool that makes the whole garden bare. This page follows one autumn: the patio and the drive first, then where the pile goes, then the deck and the artificial grass that punish the wrong bristle. The [Leaf broom](/hub/garden-tools/leaf-broom) table holds the heads, widths and prices. The page uses those listings and public UK sources, not a lab test. Paths and patios first

Sweep the walking line first. Reading Borough Council says wet leaves should be swept. That is not a claim that a broom prevents a fall. HSE guidance on wet leaves binds employers. You still owe a visitor reasonable care on your own path. A stiff broom is the regular patio step so leaves do not rot into the joints. Wet leaves want polypropylene or PVC. Flagged PET mats when soaked. A broom does not cure algae on a patio that never dries.

Lawn versus border

Thick leaves come off the lawn, or they smother the grass. What you lift can become leafmould or sit at the back of a border. A bed can keep a thin layer. The RSPB asks for one pile, off the path, for insects and hedgehogs. Black spot and scab go to green waste. Clear the path, then the lawn, then make that pile. A 61 cm head covers a drive only if you can push 1.58 kg.

Decking and artificial grass

Decking wants a broom, not a wire brush, and a pressure washer can damage boards. Artificial grass should be brushed with plastic or nylon, not metal. Keep the TidyBliss off both until you see the head: the spec says PET and many reviews describe wire. Flagged PET is a poor match for wet leaves in a groove. PVC names decking and can still mark a soft composite, so try a corner. The Scalnuvyyh has 38 ratings and two fibre lines.

What you do not have to sweep

The public pavement is a street-cleansing matter. Clear your own path, from the boundary to the door. Workplace routes stay with the employer. No broom here was lab-tested against slips. A head that falls off on first use is covered in how to use a yard brush. A small patio does not need the 1.58 kg head.

Common questions

Should I sweep wet leaves off the patio or wait until they dry?
Sweep the route people walk while the leaves are wet. Reading Borough Council's outdoor note says wet leaves should be swept. Waiting for a dry day leaves a slippery slab in the meantime. Dry leaves are easier, and they are not safer if someone uses the path tonight. A stiff polypropylene or PVC head moves wet leaves better than flagged PET, which mats when soaked. A broom does not remove the slip risk by itself.
Do leaves on the lawn need to come off?
Yes if they form a thick layer. The RHS says leaves left on the lawn smother the grass, and that you can turn what you lift into leafmould or move it to the back of a border. A thin scatter is not the same as a mat. A broom is a blunt tool on grass compared with a rake, so use it to lift the mat, not to scarify.
Can I leave a pile for wildlife?
Yes, off the path and off the lawn. The RSPB asks for a leaf pile for insects and hedgehogs. Put it where nobody walks, or in a leafmould cage. Do not build that pile from diseased leaves such as black spot or scab. The RHS sends those to green waste. One pile is enough. You do not have to strip every bed.
Will a stiff broom scratch composite decking?
A plastic broom used for dry debris is what composite-deck care notes describe. A wire brush is what they tell you not to use. The TidyBliss spec says PET and many reviews describe wire, so do not take it onto composite or timber until you have seen the head. PVC is stiff and can flick grit. Try a corner before you scrub the whole deck. A pressure washer can damage boards and is not the first step.
Can I use the same broom on artificial grass?
Use plastic or nylon, which is the As Good As Grass limit, and do not use metal. A stiff PVC or polypropylene head is in that plastic group. A head that reviews describe as wire is not. Flagged PET is gentler on fine dry dust and weaker on wet stuck leaves. The Scalnuvyyh names artificial grass in its bullets and has only 38 ratings, with PET and polypropylene both printed, so it is not the broom to trust for turf on the spec alone.
Do I have to clear the council pavement?
No. An unsafe public footpath is a street-cleansing matter for the council, which is how East Cambridgeshire describes it. Clear the path on your own ground, between the boundary and the door. A broom does not make you the highway authority. Report a blocked public path rather than treating it as a weekend chore with a 45 cm head.
Does a broom stop algae, or only move leaves?
It moves leaves and loose litter. Algae on damp, shaded paving needs more than a sweep, and the RHS treats that growth as a hard-surface problem, not as a pile you can push aside. Gardeners' World keeps the stiff broom as the regular step and a scrub for when the dirt has rotted in. No listing here is a treatment for shade or poor drainage.
