How to use a yard brush

Updated: 21.10.2026

The box looks half empty because the pole has arrived as rods, a head and no lock nut. If you have just opened a sectioned outdoor broom, this is how to use a yard brush without treating a loose joint as a technique you must invent, or a frayed tip as proof the broom is second-hand. The listings in this set that arrive in pieces are the CLEANHOME heads, the Eyliden, the Dustpan and Brush Store PVC broom, the Scalnuvyyh and the TidyBliss. The [Leaf broom](/hub/garden-tools/leaf-broom) table is where you check which head you bought. Not a lab test. A qualifying amazon.co.uk purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

What is in the box

Count the rods. The 48 in CLEANHOME is a head and four rods. TidyBliss is four poles and a head. The PVC handle is four pieces. Scalnuvyyh describes five rods. Eyliden arrives in sections. No listing includes a dustpan. A shredded, dusty head, as one 48 in review describes, is a fault. Newman and Cole lists no screws. The corn broom's thread would not start for one buyer. Fit a 45-degree face so the bristles meet the slab.

Tightening and shortening

Screw every joint until it stops, sweep a metre, and tighten again. Eyliden undoes unless it is tight. One Scalnuvyyh review says the head comes off despite tightening. That is a return, not a workshop job. There is no lock nut, and PTFE tape is not the fix. Shorten a metal pole by leaving a rod out. The 17.7 in bullets say 50 to 66 in that way. If a thread will not separate, do not force it. A 120 cm wooden handle cannot lose a section.

The first sweep

Brush debris into a pile, then clear it. Choose a light broom if your energy is limited. Push away from you, because stiff PVC or polypropylene can flick grit. Split tips on the 17.7 in CLEANHOME can look worn when new. A shredded head is different. Do not call the TidyBliss wire until you see it: the spec says flagged PET, and many reviews describe wire. Where the pile sits is on broom for patio leaves.

When to stop and send it back

Stop if the head comes off after every joint is tight. The Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 22, is the short-term right to reject faulty goods, generally within 30 days. Amazon's returns policy does not replace that right. Months of a walking thread is wear. A head off on the morning it arrives is a fault. Reject Newman and Cole if you will not add the missing screw, and stop if the corn thread will not start or the 48 in CLEANHOME arrives shredded.

Common questions

How do I put a four-rod handle together?
Lay out the four rods and the head, then screw each joint until it stops, with the grip at the top if the listing includes one. The 48 in CLEANHOME, the TidyBliss and the PVC broom are the four-piece handles in this set. The Scalnuvyyh bullets describe five rods. Sweep about a metre and tighten again. No listing here includes a lock nut or a dustpan.
How do I stop it unscrewing while I sweep?
Tighten every joint before you start, and again after the first metre. Eyliden reviews say the joint undoes unless it is tight. That is the ordinary limit of these threaded poles. If the head still comes off, as one Scalnuvyyh review describes despite tightening, stop and use the 30-day rejection right. PTFE tape and a screw through the neck are not the fix this page recommends.
Can I leave a section out to make it shorter?
Yes on the sectioned metal poles. That is how the 17.7 in CLEANHOME bullets get from 50 to 66 in, and how PVC broom reviews shorten a 120 cm handle. It is not a telescopic lock. One review says the 17.7 in broom cannot be adjusted. A one-piece wooden handle, at about 120 cm on Newman and Cole and the corn broom, cannot lose a section.
Are frayed bristles a used return?
Not by themselves on the split-tip CLEANHOME. The bullets say the tips can look worn when they are new. A shredded, dusty head, which one 48 in CLEANHOME review describes on arrival, is a different complaint. Look at whether tufts are missing or caked, not only whether the tips are split.
Does the bassine head need a screw I do not have?
On Newman and Cole, the reviews say yes. The included components list a broom handle, not screws, and several reviewers say the head comes off without a screw you add yourself. If you fit one, do it before you judge the bristles. If you expected the bracket to hold on its own, that mismatch is a description problem, not a sweeping technique.
Where do I put the broom afterwards?
Hang it, or take the sections apart, so the head is not standing in water. Wooden handles in particular should not be left wet in the head. The shed can stay damp enough to sit in metal threads, so a sectioned pole is happier indoors. Check the joint again on the next use before you start a long sweep.
When is a loose head a return rather than a technique?
When it will not stay on after you have screwed every joint tight, or when it arrives shredded, or when a thread will not start. That sits under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 22, generally within 30 days, for goods that are not of satisfactory quality or not as described. A joint you retighten after a long sweep is maintenance. A head on the patio five minutes after unboxing is a fault.
