Yard brush buying guide

Updated: 21.10.2026

A first outdoor broom is easy to buy in the wrong order. You see a 4.6-star push head, click the widest one, and then find it heavy on a small patio or useless in a corner behind a pot. This yard brush buying guide sorts the job, the width, the fibre and the handle before the star line. Prices in the nine amazon.co.uk listings run from £9.99 to £18.99, and the heads run from about 27 cm to about 61 cm. The [Leaf broom](/hub/garden-tools/leaf-broom) table holds the locked prices, stars and review counts. Not a lab test. What you are sweeping

Start with the surface, not a title that lists leaves, gravel and stables together. An open drive wants a wide push head. Pots and corners want a 45-degree head. Fine litter is closer to a straw corn broom. The English Garden says outdoor bristles are stiffer than indoor ones, and the handle should let you stand upright. That is a shopper's rule, not a British Standard. A rake, a blower and a dustpan set are different tools.

Head width and weight

Horse & Hound, writing for stables, publishes widths from about 36 cm to 61 cm. Use that only as a range. Newman and Cole's 12 in head is 30.5 cm, and reviews treat it as the light-duty end of a heavy-duty title. Eyliden prints 14.1 in and 32 cm, so treat about 32 to 36 cm as the band. The PVC broom never prints a width.

Handle length without a telescope

Adjustable here means you leave a screw-together section out, not a lock that slides. Try one section removed before you decide the pole is too long. Newman and Cole's bracket needs a screw the box does not include, or the head comes off. Fit that fixing before you judge the bristles.

What to ignore on the listing

Four listings print 4.6, and that tie is not one broom. The 17.7 in CLEANHOME has 2,072 ratings. The 23.6 in openings repeat that file. The Scalnuvyyh at 4.5 from 38 is not the same scale. On the TidyBliss the spec says PET and many reviews describe wire. One review denies the stainless claim on the 48 in CLEANHOME. The bestseller page showed £12.99 against £13.99 here. Entry is about £9.99 to £11, mid about £12 to £16, and the top of this set is £17.99 to £18.99.

Common questions

How wide a head do I need for a patio versus a drive?
A small patio or a path with pots is closer to 30 cm, which is Newman and Cole at 30.5 cm and the angle heads around 32 cm. An open drive is where 45 cm or 61 cm earns the extra width, if you can push 1.34 kg or 1.58 kg. Shetland's guide uses about 300 mm for pottering and a wide head for open ground. If the listing does not print a width, as the PVC broom does not, you cannot make that comparison from the title alone.
Is 120 cm of wooden handle enough if I am tall?
It is enough for some people and short for a reviewer at 6 ft, which is the limit already in this set. A one-piece wooden shaft cannot be shortened by leaving a section out. Stand it beside you before you decide. Sectioned metal poles in this folder change length by omitting a rod, not by a telescopic lock.
What does adjustable mean on a screw-together pole?
On these listings it means the handle arrives as threaded sections and you use as many as you need. The 17.7 in CLEANHOME bullets state 50 to 66 in that way. It is not a sliding lock with a numbered scale. One review on that broom says it cannot be adjusted, so check the live questions if length is the reason you are buying it.
Will a 1.58 kg broom be too heavy?
The 61 cm CLEANHOME is the 1.58 kg listing, against 1.34 kg on the 45 cm model and 760 g on the PVC broom and the Scalnuvyyh. On a long open slab the extra width can be worth the weight. On a small patio, or if you tire quickly, the lighter head is the one to try first. Thrive's outdoor sweeping note makes the same point for anyone whose energy is limited: choose a light broom.
Do I need a stiff broom or a softer one for dry leaves?
Wet leaves and concrete want a stiff polypropylene or PVC head. Fine dry dust is where flagged PET holds on, and it mats more readily once the leaves are wet. Bassine is the traditional stiff yard brush and can distort when soaked. Pick the surface first, then follow bassine or plastic broom before you treat every stiff title as the same fibre.
Should I buy a rake or a blower instead?
Buy a rake if the job is leaves on a lawn, and a blower only if you already know you want blown piles rather than a swept line. This category is a stiff outdoor broom for patio, path and drive debris. A broom will not scarify grass, and it will not replace a rake in a border.
Is a corn broom the same decision as a yard brush?
No. The Dustpan and Brush Store corn broom is straw on a 120 cm wooden handle at £12.91, with 4.6 from 408 ratings. It is a different sweep, useful on fine litter in a yard, not a flat platform head for a wet drive. Choose it when you want straw. Choose a push broom when you want width on paving.
