Hand spreader rock salt

Updated: 21.10.2026

You are looking at a short private path or a two-car drive after a frost warning, with a bag of rock salt and a plastic jug, and the temptation is to tip until the paving looks white. A hand spreader for rock salt is there to put down a thin coat, not a pile. Too much salt marks concrete, metal and the grass at the edge, and it does not melt a deep slab of ice any faster. This page stays on winter grit. Shelf prices and the full rows are on the [Hand spreader](/hub/garden-tools/hand-spreader) comparison. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

How much salt a path actually needs

Supplier guidance from IBT Merchants is the figure to start from, and it is guidance, not a result from these amazon.co.uk tools. About 10–15 g per square metre is the preventive rate when you are trying to stop frost bonding to a clear surface. About 20–40 g per square metre is the band they give when snow is expected or the ice is thicker. A parish reprint of a West Sussex hand-salting note uses about 20 g per square metre, which sits inside that snow band and is a useful check that a handful is already a lot. Weigh 20 g once, on the kitchen scales, and look at it. That volume, spread over a square metre, is the coat. A white drift in the middle of the slab is several times the rate. Shovel or brush loose snow first. Salt thrown on top of a thick layer does not replace the shovel, and more salt does not speed the melt of ice you could have lifted. Spread the weighed rate, wait, and add a second light pass only where the surface is still glazed. Leftover crystals after the thaw mean you used too much. Sweep them up. Do not treat Gardena's about 2.0 kg of salt bullet as a rate. That line is how much salt the hopper might hold. It is not 2 kg per square metre. A 2.5 litre jug is a volume, not a gram target either.

A handheld tool is for a short path

PreparedBritain's winter kit note points a long drive at a walk-behind such as the Gardena Spreader XL, quoted around an 800 m² class of job, and keeps a short path on a handheld shaker. That XL is not in this set. Do not swap the name onto the Hand-Held Spreader M, and do not treat LengSuaa's under-800 m² bullet as the same machine. The cordless row is £39.99, battery excluded, 4.5 from two reviews, and a poor first winter buy. For a path, a step, and a short drive, the plastic tools that actually name salt are the ones to open. Fiskars lists salt among the jobs for the Solid shaker, at £12.20 and about 280 g, with a large pour mode as well as slower flows. The 2.5 litre jugs name ice melt or salt: LYAZKMY, UTMHGU and STOWBERRY all have UK reviews that use them on a drive, at £15.69, £15.99 and £17.95. Gardena's M names salt and states a fan of about 1–4 m. A fan is useful on an open drive and risky beside a lawn. A jug lets you keep the granules on the paving. Yiddeoont names ice melt too, at £14.44, with only 11 reviews and a UK lid failure on seed. Greenera is a crank at £17.99 with UK jam notes and no salt-width claim.

Dry salt, a large hole, a lid that locks

Damp salt clogs every spreader in this category. Keep the bag shut, and do not leave yesterday's load in the hopper overnight in a wet shed. White de-icing salt is often finer and sold for paths. Brown rock salt is coarser and more likely to bridge in a small hole. The listings do not print a grain size. Open the largest aperture for coarse salt and test a metre of path before you walk the drive. A small seed hole will look broken when the product is simply too big to pass. BS 3247 is a specification people cite for the salt, on trade pages such as Slingsby's, not a mark on these garden jugs. Do not treat it as a rating of the spreader. The lid is the fault that UK reviews actually describe. One UTMHGU review says normal road salt loosened the screw lid until it fell off. Other UK reviews of driveway salt on that style of jug do not repeat it, so it is a known failure rather than the whole sample of 4.4 from 68. Fill with headroom, lock the lid, and tip once over the path. If the lid leaves on a sensible fill, stop and talk to the seller. Gloves belong on this job. Keep the pour off the grass. IBT notes that salt marks plants, grass, concrete and metal. A crank at the wide step will reach the lawn edge even when you meant to treat the slab.

After the thaw

When the ice has gone, look for crystals. A leftover scatter is the sign the rate was high. Sweep them off the paving, off the bottom of the door, and out of the bed at the edge. Do not hose them onto the lawn and call that dilution. A light sweep into a bucket beats a green-brown scar in March. Metal thresholds and car sills pick up the same residue. Rinse the hopper before it sees seed or fertiliser. Empty it, run clean water through the largest hole until it runs clear, and dry the jug open. Salt left in a Fiskars, a 2.5 litre tub or the Gardena will cake the gate and then contaminate the next sow. The how to use a handheld seed spreader page is the one to open before any seed goes back in the same tool. Do not reuse the winter dial mark as a seed setting. The hole that passed rock salt is too large for fine seed, and the gram rate is a different bag. Stop if the path is not yours, if the paving warranty or a listed surface forbids salt, or if you are looking at a long shared drive that needs a walk-behind and a salt bought for that scale. A handheld jug is the right tool for the short private path in this scenario. It is the wrong tool if you are trying to grit a street.

Common questions

How many grams of salt per square metre?
Use about 10–15 g per square metre to prevent frost on a cleared surface, and about 20–40 g per square metre when snow is expected or the ice is thicker. Those bands come from a UK salt seller, IBT Merchants, not from a test of these spreaders. A county hand-salting note uses about 20 g per square metre. Weigh one square metre before you walk the path. Gardena's 2.0 kg salt line is hopper fill, not the rate.
Should I salt on top of snow?
Clear loose snow first. Salt on top of a deep layer is a poor substitute for a shovel, and extra salt does not melt thick ice faster. Spread the light rate on the cleared surface, then a second light pass only where ice remains. If you cannot clear the snow, you are no longer in a handheld top-up job. Piling salt into the drift wastes the bag and leaves a crust of crystals when it finally thaws.
Will rock salt kill the grass at the path edge?
It can mark or kill grass, and it marks plants, concrete and metal as well. Keep the pour on the paving. A crank fan at a wide step reaches further than a jug, so shut the gate near the edge or use the shaker for that strip. Sweep leftover crystals after the thaw instead of washing them onto the lawn. If the edge is already a flower bed, do not treat that bed as part of the path.
Which tool in this set is meant for salt?
Fiskars names salt on a light shaker. The 2.5 litre jugs name salt or ice melt, and LYAZKMY, UTMHGU and STOWBERRY have UK reviews about driveway salt. Gardena's plastic M names salt and states a 1–4 m fan, which is easier to overshoot onto grass. The cordless listing mentions salt and is a weak first winter buy because the battery is extra and the review count is two. None of them prints a gram-per-metre rate.
Why did the lid fall off with road salt?
One UK review of the UTMHGU says normal road salt loosened the screw lid until it came off. Other driveway-salt reviews on that listing do not all say the same. Overfilling makes any of these lids unlock, so leave headroom and test one tip. If a locked lid still falls off on a normal fill, that is a seller issue. Do not replace the salt with table salt. Open the largest hole, use dry salt, and keep the fill below the lid.
Do I need a walk-behind spreader for a short drive?
Not for a short private path or a small drive you can cover in a few jug passes. A UK winter guide sends the long drive to a walk-behind such as the Gardena XL and leaves the short path on a handheld shaker. The XL is not in this comparison. The handheld Gardena M is a crank for about 100 m² of lawn claim, not that walk-behind. If refilling a 2.5 litre tub is the whole morning, you have outgrown the jug.
Can I put seed in the same jug afterwards?
Only after you empty it, rinse until the water runs clear, and dry it. Salt left in the hopper cakes the gate and will not do the lawn any favours at sowing time. The large hole that suited rock salt is the wrong hole for fine seed, so reset on a sheet using the seed packet. The winter dial mark is not a seed setting.
