Hand spreader buying guide

Updated: 21.10.2026

You are standing in front of a small UK lawn, a few bald patches, and a bag of seed or lawn feed, and the amazon.co.uk thumbnails all look like plastic pots. A hand spreader buying guide has to separate those pots before the price column matters. In this set the rows are carried tools only: shaker jugs, one handheld crank with a disc, a second crank that UK reviews often say jams, and one cordless fan sold without a battery. Shelf prices and the side-by-side table sit on the [Hand spreader](/hub/garden-tools/hand-spreader) comparison. What follows is the checklist those rows have to pass. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Three tools share this search

A shaker is a jug with holes. You tip it, and the granules fall where the jug is pointing. Fiskars lists the Solid as a glass-fibre shaker at £12.20 with three modes, pour, fast or slow, and about 280 g to carry. Four other rows are 2.5 litre plastic tubs between £14.44 and £17.95. None of those five states a spread width in metres. A crank throws a fan. The Gardena Hand-Held Spreader M, model 431-20, is the only listing here that states one: about 1–4 m, for lawn areas of up to about 100 m², with four quantity steps and a thumb shut-off. The third type is a cordless fan. LengSuaa's S8 is £39.99, and the bullets say a Makita 18 V battery is not in the box. The same listing's technical details say the power source is ac. If the jug-versus-disc choice is the only question left, the fork is shaker spreader or crank spreader.

What the listing must state

Capacity is the line people misread. Litres are not kilograms, and kilograms are not a spread rate. Gardena's bullets split one hopper into about 1.65 kg of fertiliser, 2.0 kg of salt and 1.0 kg of seed, and the volume field shows 1,800 ml. A UK review of that ASIN says a seed fill was about 400 g. Both figures belong in the decision: the bullet is the manufacturer's fill, the review is what one buyer actually got in. The 2.5 litre jugs tell you the tub size and stop there. Fiskars does not state litres at all. The second fact is a real way to stop the flow. Gardena's thumb control is an open-and-close on the listing. One UTMHGU review describes an off position on the selector; the bullets only promise three opening sizes.

When a handheld tool is the wrong size

About 100 m² is the handheld ceiling in Gardena's own claim, and Garden Ninja uses the same sort of cut-off before pointing you at a push spreader. It is a rule of thumb for an open lawn, not a British Standard, and it is not a promise that every jug covers that area. If your lawn is a long rectangle and refilling is the whole afternoon, you have left this category. A wheeled broadcast or drop spreader is the next tool, and this page does not rank those machines.

Lids, a rinse, and a dry granule

Lids fail in UK reviews more often than the thumbnails suggest. Yiddeoont has 4.2 from 11 reviews, and one of five UK texts says the lid would not lock and spilled grass seed. UTMHGU is stronger on paper, 4.4 from 68, and one reviewer still says normal road salt loosened the screw lid. Fill only until the lid locks, then shake once over the patio before you commit the bag. One tool can do autumn seed and January salt only if you empty and rinse it between jobs. If you only want the row to open first, that choice is on best handheld grass seed spreader.

Common questions

Is a 2.5 litre jug enough for a whole lawn?
A 2.5 litre jug tells you hopper volume, not lawn area. None of the Yiddeoont, LYAZKMY, UTMHGU or STOWBERRY rows states a spread width in metres. They are plausible for patches, pots and a short path, and they become a lot of refilling on an open lawn. Gardena's handheld M is the row that states about 100 m² and about 1–4 m. If your lawn is larger than that claim, a push spreader is the next category, not a bigger jug.
When should I leave this category and buy a push spreader?
Leave when the job is an open lawn beyond the about-100 m² handheld claim, or when refilling a carried hopper is the whole afternoon. UK guides such as Garden Ninja draw that line between a handheld rotary and a wheeled tool. A higher star rating on a jug does not change the missing width. This page does not compare push spreaders, so use the main table only to confirm you have outgrown the carried rows.
Does a higher litre number mean a more even spread?
No. Evenness comes from the mechanism, the hole or the disc, and how you overlap, not from hopper volume. Greenera lists 3 litres and no width, at 3.2 from 33 reviews, with UK notes that the spinner jams and seed clumps. Gardena lists about 1.8 litres and a stated 1–4 m fan. A 2.5 litre jug can be the right tool for a path and still leave stripes on a lawn if you pour without a pattern.
Why is the Gardena dearer than the jugs in this set?
You are paying for a stated fan, a thumb shut-off and 4.5 from 6,628 ratings, at £31.95 in this file. The jugs are about £12.20 to £17.95 and do not state metres. Older UK guides have put the same Gardena model nearer £18–£25. Those guide prices are not the amazon.co.uk shelf price captured here, so compare £31.95 with the jugs in the table, not with a blog from another year.
What if the crank jams on day one?
A new crank that will not turn can be a fault. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives 30 days to reject faulty goods for a refund, then a repair or replacement. That is a seller conversation, not a calibration trick. It is a different problem from a hole that is simply too small for the granule, which you fix by opening the gate or changing tool. Greenera's UK jam notes are why that £17.99 crank is not an automatic cheaper Gardena.
