Root barrier roll or panels: bamboo line or hardscape

Updated: 22 October 2026

The category name is the same and the objects are not. A smooth HDPE roll is a continuous wall you close around running bamboo. A ribbed panel pack is a guide you set beside a path or a drive, with the ribs facing the tree. If the plant is bamboo, the roll is the tool, and only when it is tall enough. If the job is paving, the panels are the tool, and only at the depth you measured. The listings and prices are the [root barrier comparison](/hub/garden-supplies/root-barrier). DeepRoot’s manual and two sidewalk studies were read with the listings on 20 October 2026. No trench trial. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What each form is for

A roll is one sheet you cut to the run. West Bay is 20 ft by 24 in by 60 mil at about £52.92. Gainspra is 25 ft by 30 in by 60 mil at about £141.04. You overlap the ends and seal them. There is no zipper in those boxes. The RHS growing guide is written around that continuous sheet, with a lip left above the soil. DeepRoot is five panels, each 18 in by 24 in, 10 linear feet, at about £68.52, 4.6 from 304, 90 per cent reprocessed polypropylene, with a zipper. The bullets name sidewalks, drives, patios, and trees. They do not name bamboo. Ten linear feet is about 3 m, a kerb, not a 2.5 m bamboo circle. The height check for the roll is the buying guide.

Ribs and the smooth face

DeepRoot’s manual puts the ribs at 90 degrees, facing the tree, because roots that meet the smooth face can girdle along it. A panel installed backwards is the girdling case. A smooth HDPE bamboo roll has no ribbed face to reverse. The amazon.co.uk row has no thickness figure. The listing states 18 in deep, 24 in wide, and a zipper. On a surround, the manual shows the top about half an inch above grade. On a linear detail beside pavement, it shows the top at least 2 in below the paving. Match the detail you are building. One UK review snapped a panel with a mallet. Which product is the pick is on the best root barrier page.

What the sidewalk studies actually compared

Smiley’s 2008 paper compared DeepRoot UB 18-2 panels with a polyethylene sheet 0.15 mm thick, beside pavements. At that harvest the thin sheet let large roots over the top in three of five plots. The panels did not. That sheet is closer to a heavy rubbish bag than to a 60 mil roll. The study did not test West Bay or Gainspra, and it was not a UK soil. A 2009 note found roots over every type, including DeepRoot, once soil and mulch covered the top edge. Gilman’s 2006 work found 30 cm vertical barriers weak beside paths. Forest Research says roots can turn up again once they have passed the wall. Read those papers as a warning about a thin sheet and a buried top.

A conditional pick

Choose the roll for a bamboo line: a continuous HDPE sheet, a sealed overlap, and enough height for the trench plus a visible lip. West Bay is the tallest reviewed HDPE roll, at 24 in and about £52.92, and it still cannot do 60 cm plus 7.5 cm. Gainspra states 30 in at about £141.04 and has no reviews. Choose the panels for an 18 in hardscape, ribs toward the tree. Ten linear feet at about £68.52 is a short run. Choose neither when the hope is to protect a house by plastic alone, or when the plant is Japanese knotweed.

Common questions

When do I choose a roll?
Choose a roll when you are containing running bamboo and you need a continuous sheet with a lip above the soil. You seal the overlap yourself. A short roll is the wrong default for a 60 cm trench with a 7.5 cm lip.
When do I choose panels?
Choose panels when the line is a path, a drive, or a patio, and about 18 in of depth is what you measured. The DeepRoot pack here is about £68.52 for 10 linear feet. The bullets do not name bamboo.
Which way do the ribs face?
Toward the tree. DeepRoot’s manual sets the ribs at 90 degrees on the tree side so roots do not girdle along the smooth face. A smooth HDPE bamboo roll has no rib to point.
Will a smooth sheet girdle a tree?
A smooth face can, if roots meet it and run along it, which is why the panel manual puts ribs toward the tree. That warning is about a panel installed backwards. It is not a finding that every HDPE roll girdles.
Did a study prove HDPE rolls fail?
No study cited here tested these amazon.co.uk rolls. Smiley’s 2008 comparison used a 0.15 mm polyethylene sheet, not a 60 mil roll. A later note found roots over every barrier once the top was buried.
Can I use the 18 in panels for bamboo?
Only if you have accepted a depth of about 46 cm, which is short of the RHS trench of about 60 cm plus a lip. The pack does not name bamboo. A review described roots going under an 18 in install.
What fails if the top edge sinks?
Roots and rhizomes cross over a buried top. Smiley’s seven-year note found that on every barrier type, including DeepRoot, once soil and mulch covered the edge. Do not mulch the edge under.
Do roots stay down after they pass the barrier?
Not necessarily. Forest Research notes that roots can turn up again past a trench or a barrier. A panel or a roll can shift where roots travel at the kerb. It does not replace a proper distance from a building.
