Hose water meter or inline water meter

Updated: 22 October 2026

The folder title says garden water meter for both shapes, yet one screws onto a tap and the other is cut into pipe. Hose water meter or inline water meter is that fork: when a click-on LCD is the whole job, and when the DEWIN 15 mm dial is the object you are actually buying. Prices for all nine listings sit on the [garden water meter comparison](/hub/garden-supplies/garden-water-meter). The Products Compared editorial team read the amazon.co.uk files dated 19 October 2026, with no lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

A hose meter stays on the tap

Eight of the nine ASINs are hose LCDs or hose bodies with Bluetooth. You fit them between an outside tap and a hose, read litres or a flow rate on a local screen or in an app, and take the body off when the season ends. No pipe cut is required. Shelf prices in the saved listings run from Hoite at about £16.99 to Rainpoint at about £37.99. Use a hose meter when your job is a session total on a Hozelock-style run: watering a border, washing a car, filling a tank with the hose end kept out of the water. Fitting the arrow, washer, and first jug check is on how to fit a hose water meter. A hose meter can still feed a private notebook of outside-tap use. It does not become a company sub-meter because the title says water meter.

DEWIN is a 15 mm cold dial

DEWIN B07XNYMWJD at about £25.99 is the only inline dial in this set: copper, about 640 g, cold water, mechanical word wheel and pointer, first listed on 9 September 2019. The bullet allows vertical or horizontal mounting on 15 mm and claims a protective cover. There is no button cell and no litres-per-minute LCD. UK reviews fitted it on the pipe feed to an outside tap and still bought a Screwfix 3/4 inch female or a B&Q 15 mm female connector plus PTFE tape, even when the listing suggested fittings were included. One review reported a leak after about 11,000 litres; another said the dial arrived off zero. The file shows no WRAS or MID mark. Hot water is out of scope: the bullets describe a cold-water meter. Choose DEWIN only if you are prepared to make a pipe joint, or to pay someone who is. Do not score it as a weak hose gadget. It is a different object in the same category folder.

Neither one is the company’s revenue meter

Ofwat’s metering pages keep the company’s meter as the volume that sets a metered bill. South West Water’s meters FAQ describes an external-use sub-meter as their manifold and their meter, priced on that page at £154 plus VAT for the company fit, not a hose LCD and not DEWIN by ASIN. Anglian’s garden FAQ talks about a plumber-fitted private sub-meter on an outside supply when use is high. It does not name these nine listings. Whether a private reading can change wastewater charges is a company scheme question on garden water meter sewerage allowance. Schedule 6 of the Measuring Instruments Regulations 2016 sets trade-use errors for cold-water meters. These files do not show that approval. Do not treat a missing MID line as a minor footnote if your goal is a billing instrument.

Which to leave on the shelf

If you only want a counter between tap and hose, leave DEWIN on the shelf and pick among the hose LCDs on the main table. If you are cutting into 15 mm cold pipe on the outside-tap feed and you accept an extra connector and a mechanical dial, look at DEWIN, then still ask your water company before you call it a sub-meter. If you need hot water metering, skip both shapes in this folder. If you need Bluetooth history versus a local screen, that choice stays inside the hose group on the garden water meter buying guide. It is not a reason to buy the dial.

Common questions

Can I fit DEWIN by hand on the hose?
No. It is a 15 mm pipe meter. UK buyers fitted it on the feed to an outside tap with an extra connector and PTFE tape. A click-on hose LCD is the hand-tight job.
Why did UK buyers still need a connector?
The bullet language about fittings did not match what several reviewers found on the shelf. Plan for a 3/4 inch or 15 mm female connector and tape before you open the pipe.
Does DEWIN show litres per minute?
No. It is a mechanical dial with a word wheel and pointer. Flow rate on an LCD is a hose-meter feature, not this ASIN’s.
Is DEWIN WRAS or MID approved in the file?
No. The saved listing shows neither mark. A different 15 mm meter sold by a specialist may print MID and WRAS; that does not transfer to DEWIN.
When is a hose LCD the whole job?
When you want a removable counter on a hose tail for watering, washing, or filling, without cutting pipe. Choose litres, thread, and review notes on the buying guide and best page.
Who should not buy a 640 g dial meter?
Anyone who only wanted a Hozelock click-on counter, anyone who cannot make a cold-water pipe joint, and anyone who needs a hot-water range. Also skip it if you expected an LCD flow rate.
If I want a bill adjustment, is DEWIN automatically the sub-meter?
No. Company schemes describe approved apparatus and locations. South West Water’s own sub-meter route is a separate product and price. Ask your retailer before you cut pipe for billing reasons.
Hot water?
DEWIN’s bullets describe cold water only. The hose LCDs in this set are outdoor hose counters, not domestic hot-water meters. Look elsewhere for a hot range.
