How to use an electric patio cleaner

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have the brush, or it arrives today, and the first pass is the one that throws grit at your shoes. How to use an electric patio cleaner comes down to a dry joint, a guard that is actually on, and a pace you can walk. The tools on the [electric joint cleaner comparison](/hub/garden-supplies/electric-joint-cleaner) split into a 10 m mains lead and an 18 V pack, but the session order is the same. Which wheel belongs on sandstone is on the [wire brush vs nylon patio cleaner](/hub/garden-supplies/electric-joint-cleaner/sub/electric-joint-cleaner-wire-vs-nylon) page. This page is the first dry half-hour.

Before you plug in or click the pack in

Electrical Safety First says to unplug before you change or clear the tool, and outdoor leads should be fully unwound. HSE states the 30 mA trip threshold, and an IET note on BS 7671 points the same way for outdoor mobile equipment. None of the amazon listings prove a BS 1363 plug or an IP rating. If the far slabs sit beyond the claimed 10 m lead on Ark Mat or Ecobuild, add a fully unwound outdoor extension, not a drum of indoor cable. One kit reviewer expected two batteries and found one, and one solo delivery was missing a guard screw. Ark Mat claims 94–122 cm. Ecobuild claims 83–114 cm.

Guard, wheel, and a short trial

Einhell’s GE-CC 18 Li manual says to fit the guard with two screws and keep both hands on the tool. One kit reviewer could not get the screws in, so if the guard will not seat, stop rather than run the head open. Ryobi’s guidance asks for eye and hearing protection, gloves, boots and long trousers, a guard, and bystanders back about 15 m. Kärcher’s amazon bullets name walls. Do not lift a spinning head up a wall because a bullet mentioned it. The choice before you buy is on the electric patio cleaner buying guide.

How you move the head

If the wheel stalls, lift the pressure. Do not lift a spinning brush off the ground to move it sideways. The Einhell two-point switch has no lock. One kit reviewer reported a numb thumb after about 60 minutes. Kärcher’s switch is called too sensitive. Ark Mat’s is described as temperamental. An Ark Mat reviewer needed long-nose pliers after the tool was stopped, because stalks blocked the collet. Kärcher’s locking cap can stick, so change a strip with the battery off, not with the head live. Ryobi supplied an Allen key for a handle one reviewer says needs a star bit.

After the pass

Marshalls says sand pulled out with the weed should be replaced. The detail of narrow joints is on the electric weed remover for block paving page. Glyphosate remains approved in Great Britain until 15 December 2026, and this page is not a spray method. Call a paving contractor when blocks have sunk or the edge restraint has failed. When you finish, unplug or remove the pack before you clear the guard, and store the tool dry.

Common questions

What do you check before you switch it on?
The patio should be dry, the guard on, and the wheel the one you trialled in a corner. On Ark Mat or Ecobuild, the lead is unwound and the RCD test button has been pressed. On a bare Einhell, Ryobi or Kärcher, the correct brand of battery is fitted. On the Einhell kit, confirm the battery and charger are in the carton. Glasses, gloves and both hands on the tool are the minimum the manuals are pointing at.
Can you use a mains brush on a wet patio?
No. Electrical Safety First says not to use mains garden tools on dew or in the rain. That covers the Ark Mat and Ecobuild leads. A cordless pack does not make a wet joint a good idea either. The manuals describe dry surface growth, and a wet stone hides how hard the wheel is cutting. Wait until the paving has dried, including the joints.
Steel wheel or nylon wheel on the first pass?
Use nylon for the trial if the stone might be soft, then steel only where the corner is unmarked and the growth is on robust paving or concrete. Einhell puts steel on obstinate weeds on robust surfaces and nylon on sensitive faces. Kärcher gives you nylon only. Ryobi gives you wire only until a separate nylon wheel is fitted. Do not start with steel on sandstone to save a minute.
How fast do you walk the head?
Walk, with both hands, which is what Einhell’s manual asks for. Kärcher says not to scrub. If you have to lean hard, the weed is too thick or the wheel is too wide, and a later pass is safer than forcing it. Tight block paving needed several passes in the Einhell reviews. Do not lift a spinning brush clear of the ground to shift it along the slab.
What happens to the jointing sand?
It comes out with the moss. Brush it back the same day, while it is still on the blocks. Marshalls treats missing sand as a reason block paving starts to fail. If the joint was already empty, new kiln-dried jointing sand is a paving job. One Einhell reviewer did brush the thrown sand and soil back in after the pass. Soil and weed debris are not a fill.
Does the brush kill the root?
It does not. Kärcher’s manual says the work is superficial and the roots stay. Einhell and Ark Mat reviewers say the same about grass and dandelions. Keep on top of small weeds if a brush is your method. For a root in a narrow joint, use a knife. A second battery only buys more time on the surface. It does not change what the wheel can reach. Unplug, or take the pack off, before you clear a jam.
