How to Use Wood Brightener

Updated: October 2026

The bottle is already on the bench, the timber looks grey or stained, and the useful question is the order of work. How to use wood brightener means keeping the liquid on the fibre, stopping it drying to a crust, rinsing it off, and protecting the wood only when it is dry. The Products Compared editorial team used the Rustins 2024 label and data sheet, HSE notes, and the amazon.co.uk snapshot of 15 October 2026. Shelf prices move, and a qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. The five products are on our [wood brightener comparison](/hub/garden-furniture/wood-brightener).

Stop before you open the bottle

Coatings have to be off. Varnish, lacquer, oil and wax keep the liquid on the film, and the colour underneath stays patchy. A two-part bleach and a ready oxalic solution are not interchangeable mid-job. Do not start if the wood is soft under a thumbnail, or if a joint rocks. Old paint may contain lead, and sanding that film is not a weekend bottle task. A staircase, a fitted floor, or a large deck with employed staff sits outside this page, because COSHH binds the employer. Hive treatment is out as well: these listings show no VM number.

Protect yourself and what is around the furniture

Wear eye protection and gloves before you open either family of bottle. The 300 ml oxalic listing says the liquid is harmful if swallowed, causes serious eye damage and may cause respiratory irritation. Never mix these products with household chlorine bleach. Acid plus hypochlorite can release chlorine. Do not mix the oxalic bottle with the two-part set either. HSE's EH40/2005 figures for oxalic acid are workplace limits. At home you follow the label on the bottle in hand.

Use a brightener or oxalic solution to lift grey and stains

Test a patch on a leg or the underside of an arm, then look once it has dried. Furniture Clinic's teak kit excludes exterior oak. Not every bottle here prints that line, so the patch is how you find out. Keep the surface damp. If it flashes dry in the sun, you are making a crust, so rinse with clean water while it is still wet. No dwell time is stated for the 300 ml bottle, the 500 ml bottle, or either Star brite listing. If your label has no time, do not borrow one. Do not dissolve crystals into these ready 9.9% bottles.

Use the two-part set only when the wood should go paler

The Rustins set is the best value when bare wood should go paler than it grew. The 2024 label specifies a synthetic-fibre brush. Apply part A and leave it 10 to 20 minutes, then wash the brush and apply part B for about two hours. Wash with clean water two hours after the final B. Leftovers must not go back into either bottle. Before oil, wax or polyurethane, wash with white vinegar, one teaspoon in a cup of water, and let that dry. If the next coat is Rustins Quick Dry Varnish, do not use vinegar. That vinegar step is not for the oxalic bottles. The acid-free Star brite bottle is the top pick for neglected outdoor teak.

Rinse, dry, then protect

Whichever bottle you used, rinse it off. Do not oil or seal a wet, unrinsed surface. A slat that is still cool underneath is not dry, even if the top looks matt. The brightener is not a finish. This page only requires a dry surface before any film goes on.

Common questions

What should I wear, and what must I never mix it with?
Wear eye protection and gloves, and keep the work ventilated. The 300 ml oxalic page warns of harm if swallowed, serious eye damage and respiratory irritation. Never mix oxalic acid or the two-part set with household chlorine bleach. Acid plus hypochlorite can release chlorine. Do not combine the two product families to chase a stronger result. EH40 limits for oxalic acid are workplace figures for employers. At home you follow the label.
How long do I leave a 9.9% oxalic solution on the wood?
No dwell time is stated for the 300 ml and 500 ml listings in this snapshot. Do not insert 5, 15 or 60 minutes from another brand's page. Star brite's five-minute note belongs to a different brightener on the brand site, and AG Woodcare's longer dwell belongs to crystals. Keep this ready solution damp, test a patch first, and rinse before it dries to a crust. If your own label prints a time, that label wins over this page.
What is the order for Rustins part A and part B?
On bare wood, use a synthetic brush. Part A stays on for 10 to 20 minutes and part B for about two hours, then wash with clean water. Repeat both only for very dark wood or severe weather stains. Before oil, wax or polyurethane, use one teaspoon of white vinegar in a cup of water, and skip vinegar if the next coat is Rustins Quick Dry Varnish.
When can I oil or seal?
Only when the wood is dry, and only after you have rinsed the brightener off. Oil on a wet, unrinsed surface can trap moisture. The brightener itself does not protect the timber. This page does not choose between teak oil and a water-based protector. That choice sits on the teak page. The shared rule here is the dry surface, not the brand of finish.
When should I stop and call a professional?
Stop if the wood is soft or a joint has failed, if you are facing a staircase, a fitted floor or a large deck with employed staff, or if the existing paint may contain lead. Employed work is a COSHH assessment for the employer, not a bottle from this comparison. Stop as well if the real job is a hive. These listings are not authorised bee medicines, and they show no VM number.
