Wood Brightener Buying Guide

Updated: October 2026

A grey garden bench, a black mark on a teak arm, and a stripped oak top you want paler than it grew are three different jobs. A wood brightener buying guide starts with that mark, then with bare timber, then with a volume you can check. Star ratings come after those three. The Products Compared editorial team read five amazon.co.uk listings on 15 October 2026, with GOV.UK licensing guidance and the oxalic acid line in the Poisons Act 1972. There was no laboratory assay. Shelf prices move, and a qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. The five bottles are tabulated on our [wood brightener comparison](/hub/garden-furniture/wood-brightener). Name the mark before you compare the prices.

Name the job before the bottle

Grey outdoor timber has lost the colour it grew with. An iron, tannin or rust mark is a stain in the grain. A surface you want paler than the species grew is a bleaching job. Those three marks do not share a bottle when amazon.co.uk prints wood bleach on several titles. Oxalic acid, and a teak cleaner-brightener, are aimed at the wood's own colour. A two-part bleach is sold to make bare wood white or lighter. If varnish, oil or wax is still on the bench, none of these five is the first step.

Read the chemistry and the hazard line

Two generic bottles state oxalic acid at 9.9%: 300 ml at £7.97 and a 500 ml title at £9.97. A printed 9.9% sits under the 10% w/w line in Schedule 1A of the Poisons Act 1972, and it was not proved compliant here. The 300 ml listing warns of harm if swallowed, serious eye damage and respiratory irritation. That eye warning is H318 under GB CLP. HSE's EH40/2005 limits, 1 mg/m³ over eight hours and 2 mg/m³ over 15 minutes, bind employers under COSHH. At home you follow the label: gloves, eye protection, and no household chlorine bleach in the same bucket, because acid plus hypochlorite can release chlorine. The £56.18 Star brite bottle is labelled acid-free, and reviews still mention a sting on skin. Rustins, at £22.86, uses stabilised hydrogen peroxide in part B. No percentage is stated, so the 12% w/w licence line is not applied.

Buy a volume you can check

The 300 ml bottle agrees with a 300 g item weight, about £26.57 a litre. Model 52416 is £31.76 for 473.18 ml, about £67 a litre. The acid-free bottle is the top pick for neglected outdoor teak, and it states both 32 fl oz and 32 ml at 1.09 kg, so there is no price per litre. The 500 ml oxalic title is £9.97 and the item weight is 250 g, so that fill is not settled. Rustins is a 500 ml set at £22.86 and 1.19 kg. Do not force a price per litre onto two parts. It is the best value when the wood should go paler and you check the seals. Furniture Clinic's brightener, from £14.99, is not one of these five.

Leave the wrong products on the shelf

Stain, boiled linseed oil, wax and scratch crayons add a film. They do not lift grey weathering. Household chlorine bleach is a third chemical, and it must not be mixed with these acids. The 500 ml title mentions varroa. These wood listings show no VM number. Do not use them on a hive. Grey weathering on bare wood points to oxalic acid or a teak cleaner. Wood you want paler than it grew points to the two-part set, including the limit that applied dyes often will not lift.

Common questions

Do I want oxalic acid, a teak cleaner, or a two-part bleach?
Choose from the mark, not from the star line. Grey weathering, iron, tannin or rust on bare wood points to a stated oxalic solution or a teak cleaner-brightener. Bare wood you want paler than it grew points to the two-part set. A teak brand is worth it when you will still oil or seal afterwards. It is unnecessary when a small stain is the whole job.
Why do some bottles say 9.9%, and do I need a licence?
The 9.9% figure is what those two listings print. It was not assayed for this page. Schedule 1A sets the oxalic acid limit at 10% w/w, and GOV.UK requires an explosives precursors and poisons licence for a member of the public buying above that stated limit. Crystals are a different product. AG Woodcare does not sell them to a private buyer as a general retail line. Follow the hazard text on the bottle you receive.
Which pack size can I trust on the listing?
Use a fill the page can support with a second line. The 300 ml bottle agrees with 300 g, and model 52416 states 473.18 ml, so a price per litre is possible. The £56.18 listing states 32 fl oz and 32 ml together, so that volume cannot be used. The 500 ml title does not agree with an item weight of 250 g. The Rustins set is two parts, so it has no price per litre here.
Can I trust five stars from two reviews?
Treat 5.0 from two reviews, with no review text to read, as an almost empty file. It does not show how the 500 ml bottle behaves on garden timber. amazon.co.uk shows 4.5 from 1,305 on the acid-free Star brite bottle and 4.3 from 338 on model 52416. The reviews we read are mostly from outside the United Kingdom. Use them as a sample size, not as a UK trial.
The title mentions varroa. Can I use this on a hive?
No. The Veterinary Medicines Directorate authorises separate oxalic products as bee medicines. The wood listings here show no VM number, including the 500 ml title that mentions varroa alongside decking, rust and GRP. A garden-timber bottle is not a hive treatment because the word appears in the title. Buy an authorised medicine if the job is bees.
