Garden storage box leaking

Updated: 23 October 2026

You opened the lid after a wet week and the cushions feel damp. A garden storage box leaking is not one fault. Rain through the lid and moisture you packed in need different fixes. On the [waterproof storage box comparison](/hub/garden-furniture/waterproof-storage-box) every table says water resistant, from the £44.45 Kentwood to the £74.01 Marvel+. This page is what to do with that wording once the box is outside. Peter F. matched the extracts on 21 October 2026 and did not leave a sensor in a box over winter. What the four listings actually say about water

Water resistant is the specifications line on all four. The Kentwood and Marvel+ titles say weatherproof, the Signature bullet says weather-resistant, and Olsen & Smith's title says waterproof. None prints an IP code, so nothing maps onto BS EN 60529. The CAP Code expects an absolute claim to be backed. Reviewers disagree: some 190 litre texts say the first rain stayed out, and some had not had rain yet. A shut lid is a fair hope in ordinary rain, not an IP number. If the title said waterproof and rain is running in, that is a description point under section 11 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015.

Rain through the lid, or damp that was packed in

A leak is water that crossed from outside to inside: a drip at the lid, a pool after wind-driven rain, a base in a puddle. Condensation is moisture already in the cushion or the air, trapped when the lid shut. Keter says store clean, dry items, consider silica gel, and shut the lid. Harbour Lifestyle says slightly damp foam grows mould, and winter storage belongs indoors or in a bag. Beads under the lid, with dry kit, point to cold plastic. One wet corner points to a gap, including a Marvel+ lid that no longer lines up because the sides bowed. None of these four lists gas pistons. A cover does not rewrite the table. Ventilation is on the resin or metal garden storage box page.

What to do before you store anything

Dry the foam, not only the cover, then stand the box out of a puddle. Silica gel does not dry a soaked pad. At about 5.6 to 6.4 kg empty, shared reviews say the chest moves in a breeze unless you weigh it down. Do not start with sealant. No listing specifies a bead, and a home-made seal can block ventilation. One shared review says the lid latch was missing. One Olsen & Smith review says the listed lock did not arrive. Talk to the seller for a missing part, or for rain after a waterproof title when the foam went in dry. The short-term right to reject has a time limit under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. Winter fabric is on the garden cushion storage box guide.

What a dry Tuesday does not prove

A dry Tuesday is not a test. Ordinary rain on a shut lid is the use the water-resistant line is aiming at. A submerged chest is not what these pages describe. If you talk to the seller, the useful record is a photo of the gap, the carton contents, and the title you bought against.

Common questions

Why is the inside damp if the lid was shut?
A shut lid holds moisture as well as keeping rain off. Wet foam, wet boots or damp air cooled overnight will leave the inside clammy even when no rain came through the joint. Look for a tide mark or a wet corner if you suspect a gap. Look at what you packed, and whether it was dry through the foam, if the damp is general. The two causes need different next steps.
Should I add sealant?
Not as the first move. The listings do not specify a sealant, and a bead you add can block ventilation and complicate a return. Dry the contents, stand the box out of a puddle, and check that the lid still meets the rim. A Marvel+ review describes sides bending so the lid sits out of line. That is a fit problem to raise with the seller, not a gap to fill before you know which fault you have.
Does a cover fix a water-resistant chest?
A cover can shed blown rain. It does not rewrite the table from water resistant to waterproof, and it can trap damp air against the box. One Marvel+ reviewer wants a cover because they do not trust the plastic alone. Use a cover as extra shelter if you wish, and still put dry kit inside. A cover all winter over damp cushions is the habit Harbour Lifestyle warns against.
What is condensation versus a leak?
Condensation is moisture already in the air or the contents, beading on cold plastic. A leak is rain that crosses from outside to inside, often at the lid line, a distorted rim or a base sitting in water. Beads across the whole underside of the lid, with dry kit that went in dry, point to condensation. A pool in one corner after wind-driven rain points to a leak.
Will silica gel replace a dry cushion?
No. Keter suggests silica gel as a help beside clean, dry items and a shut lid. Gel can take the edge off residual air moisture. It will not dry a pad that went in damp, and Harbour Lifestyle says even slightly damp foam grows mould. Dry the cushion indoors until the foam is dry, then use gel if you want a buffer. The gel is not a substitute for that afternoon inside.
