How to store stacking garden chairs

Updated: 22 October 2026

The barbecue is over, four plastic chairs are wet, and you want them off the patio before the next band of rain. This is how to store stacking garden chairs when you already own them, including the four green models in our amazon.co.uk set. Peter F. did not invent a stack limit, because none of those listings prints one. The comparison, if you are still choosing a pack, is the [garden stacking chairs comparison](/hub/garden-furniture/garden-stacking-chairs). Advice below is care, not a buying table. Clean and empty the seat

The only care line on the four listings is wipe clean. That matches the RHS and IKEA UK: wash plastic outdoor seats with mild soap and water. Skip scourers and a pressure washer. Do not turn a mention of bleach into a recipe. On the set of four, and on the VTL chair, buyers say water pools and does not drain. Tip the chair out and let it dry before you stack it. Weatherproof does not mean the seat drains, or that the chair can live outside all winter. The load check, if you are still buying, is on the stacking garden chairs buying guide.

Stack on a flat floor

Stack the same model on itself. A clam back will not nest cleanly on a low back. Use a level floor in a shed, garage or spare room. The listings recommend carpet and hard floor, not grass. There is no printed maximum. Stop while the pile is still steady if you nudge it, and do not climb it. Reviews of the set of four say the chairs blow about. That pack prints 10 kg without saying chair or set. The sets of six and eight print 2.35 kg with the same ambiguity. The VTL page prints 1 kg. None of those figures promises they will stay put. Bring them in. The RHS and IKEA both allow a cover when you cannot store indoors.

Winter: two public instructions

Public advice does not agree, and your listing does not settle it. The RHS says store plastic seats indoors if you can, because winter and strong sun can make them brittle. IKEA UK says cover plastic, or store it cool and dry, because it can crack when it freezes. Which? says you should not need to store plastic garden furniture in winter, while extreme heat can warp it. Argos and JYSK tell buyers of the Bica and the Nabben to store or cover those chairs. Those lines are not printed on simpahome or VTL. These four pages print neither a winter method nor a UV rating. A tight, damp cover holds moisture against the plastic. If you are still choosing the material, that is on plastic vs metal garden chairs.

If a chair has cracked

Stop sitting on it. On the set of four the failure is often the leg or the joint at the seat. On the set of six, backs and legs snap on first use. On the set of eight, a chair snapped after about 30 minutes. On the VTL chair, one back split the first time someone sat and turned. Take that chair out of the stack. Glue is not a repair this page supports. If the chair is faulty, unfit or not as described, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives you 30 days to reject it. One set-of-eight buyer says a single broken chair was refused unless the whole set went back. A serious injury needs medical help. If the chairs come out again, see stacking chairs for a garden party.

Common questions

How do I stack them without guessing a limit?
Stack only identical chairs, on a flat floor, and stop while the pile is still steady if you push it gently. None of the four listings prints a maximum height. Do not climb the stack, and do not copy a stack count from a school or contract chair that publishes one.
How do I clean them?
Wipe them with mild soap and water, then rinse the soap off and let them dry. That is the listing’s wipe clean line, and it matches RHS and IKEA advice for plastic seats. Do not scour the surface, and do not treat a casual mention of bleach as a measured method.
What do I do when rain sits in the seat?
Tip the water out before you stack. Reviews of the set of four and of the VTL chair say the seat holds a puddle and does not drain through the gaps. Leave the chair to dry so the next one in the pile is not sitting in that water. The word weatherproof on the bullet does not mean the seat empties itself.
Why do RHS and Which? disagree?
They are answering slightly different worries. The RHS is talking about plastic left out in winter and strong sun becoming brittle. Which? is talking about plastic as a weather-resistant budget material that can warp in extreme heat. Your four listings print neither position. You choose storage from the chair you own, not from a slogan on a different brand.
A leg is cracked. Do I glue it?
No. Take it out of use. A crack in a leg or at the top of the back is the failure reviewers already describe, including sitters who went backwards. You have 30 days to reject faulty goods under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. Glue is not a fix this guide supports, and an injury needs a clinician, not a hardware shop.
