Teak or pine garden bench

Updated: 22 October 2026

The listing says hardwood, the photo looks golden, and the price is £49.99, or the next tab shows teak oil on a bench that is not teak at all. Teak or pine garden bench is one fork for a UK buyer: oily hardwood with a wash-led winter, or treated pine that needs a yearly preservative, with meranti and unnamed wood named honestly in between. None of the seven listings in this set is certified teak. Prices sit on our [wooden garden bench comparison](/hub/garden-furniture/garden-bench-wood). The Products Compared editorial team used amazon.co.uk listings in this folder and public UK sources. If you buy through our links we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

The real fork

The RHS splits outdoor seating care by timber type. Oily hardwoods such as teak can stay outside with an annual wash. They silver if you skip a protector, and that colour change is not automatic rot. Treated pine and other softwoods want a yearly preservative stain on dry wood, especially on horizontal seats and feet in damp ground. Which? notes that softwoods need constant protection while hardwoods last longer with washing, so do not treat oil and stain as the same job. The steps sit on wooden garden bench care. Choose teak, or another named oily hardwood you will wash, when you want lower winter maintenance. Choose pine for the sub-£70 metal-ended pattern in this set if you accept the preservative calendar. A frame row that says hardwood beside a pine bullet is a description problem, not an upgrade.

Meranti is not teak

Meranti appears once in this folder: Furinno Tioman, dark red meranti with teak oil, about 150 cm wide. Teak oil on meranti is a finish, not a species change. The frame field also prints teak. Trust the meranti bullet. Eucalyptus and other named hardwoods sit mostly outside this set on amazon.co.uk. A CASARIA eucalyptus example showed certified-hardwood language above the pine band. That is context for the price fork, not an eighth pick here. Width, plastic backs and load wording sit on the wooden garden bench buying guide.

When the listing only says wood

VEVOR and the SFAREST perch stop at wood or solid wood, so the care path is not on the page. One UK review on the VEVOR calls it a metal bench, so read the live materials line before you order. Wood-effect metal and plastic from a wood search are a different product family. Drop them before you argue teak versus pine.

Money and maintenance

The money fork is budget pine with a yearly preservative against hardwood money with wash-led care. Pine left bare on the seat face weathers faster than a washed teak seat left to silver. Which of the seven to open first sits on best wooden garden bench. GOV.UK timber rules put furniture in scope for operators on the Great Britain market. Shoppers still need an FSC or PEFC code on the listing, and none of these seven prints one. Durability and legality are separate questions. A pine bench that matches the gap is the right buy when you will stain it.

Common questions

Is teak worth the money for a UK garden?
It can be, when you want wash-led care and you are ready for the price band outside this set. On the 21 October 2026 amazon.co.uk snapshot, named teak benches sat near £351 and £495, while Jati's shop pages listed plantation teak from roughly £215. None of the seven ASINs here is certified teak. Pay that jump for the species and the simpler winter wash, not because a £50 pine frame row used the word hardwood.
Will treated pine last if I stain it yearly?
The RHS expects a yearly preservative stain on dry softwood, especially on the seat and on feet that sit in damp ground. That is the maintenance you accept with the Garden Vida pine rows at £47.99 to £49.99. Skipping the coat lets the finish fail sooner. A stain does not turn the bench into teak, and this page does not invent a service life in years.
Is meranti a teak substitute?
Meranti is a named hardwood, not teak. Furinno Tioman at £117.99 is dark red meranti finished with teak oil, about 150 cm wide, and the frame field also prints teak. Trust the meranti bullet. You get a wider timber bench than the pine rows, and only 34 reviews.
What if the listing only says wood?
You cannot choose a wash or a preservative from that wording. VEVOR at £63.00 and the SFAREST perch both stop at wood or solid wood. Ask the seller for the species in writing, or budget for softwood care until a label says otherwise.
Does teak oil turn pine into teak?
No. Teak oil is a finish. The timber stays pine, or meranti, whatever the tin says. Oiling a Garden Vida pine bench may change the colour. It does not give you oily-hardwood behaviour or a teak certificate. If the goal is low-care silvering, you are in the teak price band, not the £50 pine band.
Can I leave either out all winter?
Both can stay outside if the care matches the timber: an annual wash for oily hardwoods, a preservative on dry pine, and feet kept off standing water. A tight cover on a damp bench is a separate problem. Grey teak is not automatic rot. Bare pine on a horizontal seat is the case that wants the stain.
