Wooden garden bench buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are standing in a UK garden with a tape measure and an amazon.co.uk tab open, and the listings promise hardwood, three seats, and a heavy load figure. A wooden garden bench buying guide should settle four things before the price table: which timber you are actually buying, whether the back is wood or plastic, whether the width will seat the people you have, and what a kilogram line does not prove. The seven listings and GBP prices sit on our [wooden garden bench comparison](/hub/garden-furniture/garden-bench-wood). Peter F. read those amazon.co.uk files and the public UK pages named below, and did not run a laboratory test. If you buy through our links we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What counts as a wooden garden bench here

A wooden garden bench in this set is timber seating for wet British weather, usually with a back, sold as a bench rather than a chair or a storage box. Under about £70 on amazon.co.uk the common pattern is flat-pack slats on metal ends. Several Garden Vida patterns use a plastic decorative back on pine, or on hardwood language. That still counts as a wooden bench for shopping, and the back material is a separate check. Wood-effect metal and wood-grain plastic from a wood search are out of scope. Named teak benches outside this folder often sit well above £300 on amazon.co.uk. The Oxford teak listing was £495.00, and a Festnight teak banana seat was £351.16 with only three reviews. Those prices show the hardwood band. They are not picks inside the seven ASINs. If the gap is under 110 cm, or you are reading a 120 cm three-seater claim, the fit detail is on two seater wooden garden bench.

Read the timber line before the adjective

Start with the bullet that names a species. Pine, meranti, and unnamed wood are different maintenance jobs. The RHS treats oily hardwoods and treated softwoods as separate care paths: hardwoods get an annual wash, and softwoods want a yearly preservative stain on dry timber, especially on horizontal surfaces and feet that sit in damp soil. A frame row that says hardwood next to a pine bullet is a contradiction. Trust the pine line for care and for a Consumer Rights Act 2015 description check. In this set the Garden Vida metal-ended benches print solid pine, or a hardwood-slat claim beside plastic in the materials. The VEVOR bench at £63.00 says solid wood without a species, so you cannot plan a pine stain or a teak-oil routine from that listing alone. The Furinno Tioman at £117.99 names dark red meranti with teak oil, and its frame field also says teak. Treat meranti as the working claim. Teak oil on meranti is a finish, not proof you bought teak. None of the seven listings prints an FSC or PEFC code. UK timber rules put furniture in scope for the operator who first places it on the Great Britain market. You still need a certificate code on the page if that labelling matters. The species fork is on teak or pine garden bench.

Back, width, and stated load

Look at the back before the cast-iron ends. Rose, cross, and twin-cross Garden Vida patterns use plastic decorative backs on roughly 123 × 53 cm footprints at £47.99 to £48.99. The slatted Garden Vida at £49.99 keeps a timber back and curved arms on about 120 × 62 cm. The VEVOR adds arms and a deeper seat of about 63.5 cm. Plastic is acceptable if you want the motif and will maintain the pine slats. It is the wrong buy if you assumed carved timber. Near 120 to 123 cm, sold as three seats, UK reviews in this set more often describe two adults. Wilfirs' rule of thumb puts about 1.2 m with two people and about 1.5 m with three. Furinno at about 149.6 cm is the only kept listing that approaches a true three-adult footprint. The SFAREST at 100 × 30 cm is a backless perch for two claimed seats, not a deep garden seat. Load lines such as 240 kg or 700 lb are seller claims. BS EN 581-2:2026 bases mechanical tests on persons up to 110 kg, excludes street furniture, and does not test weathering. No listing here cites EN 581. A 9 kg or 11.5 kg bench can still tip if you sit hard on one end.

Assembly and arrival checks

Expect flat-pack work. Garden Vida reviews repeatedly mention a proper spanner, many bolts per slat, and instructions that some buyers call poor. The VEVOR listing fights itself: the technical row says assembly is not required, the bullets claim about 15 minutes, and UK reviews describe fitting legs and boards. Photograph any arrival damage before you start. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, satisfactory quality is judged against description, price, finish, safety, and durability. A joint that arrives open is a retailer problem. If a slat splits through after a season, or an iron end arrives cracked, stop sitting and contact the seller or a joiner. Paths, schools, and cemeteries follow the landowner's specification, not this buying guide. When you only need who each of the seven is for, use best wooden garden bench.

Common questions

What wood am I actually buying on these listings?
Read the species bullet, not the adjective in the title. Pine is the working claim on most Garden Vida rows here, at £47.99 to £49.99. Furinno names dark red meranti with teak oil. VEVOR and SFAREST say wood without a species, so you cannot plan a teak wash or a pine stain from those pages. A hardwood frame field next to a pine bullet is a conflict, not an upgrade.
Is a plastic decorative back acceptable?
Yes if you want the rose, cross, or twin-cross look and you already accept plastic on the panel. Those Garden Vida backs sit at £47.99 to £48.99, and UK reviews often say they expected metal. No if you assumed an all-timber lattice. The slatted Garden Vida and the VEVOR are the timber-back rows in this set.
How wide is a real three-seater?
A useful rule of thumb is about 1.5 m for three adults and about 1.2 m for two. Near 120 to 123 cm in this folder, UK reviews more often describe two adults even when the listing prints three seats. Furinno at about 149.6 cm is the only kept width in the wider band. Measure the gap before you trust the seat count.
What does 240 kg mean against BS EN 581?
It is a seller's load line, not a test report. BS EN 581-2 bases its strength checks on persons up to 110 kg and does not test weathering from light or moisture. The VEVOR's 700 lb line is the same kind of claim. None of these seven listings prints an EN 581 certificate, so do not treat the kilogram figure as one.
Do I need assembly tools and a second person?
Usually a spanner and patience, and a second person helps when the iron ends are heavy or the holes do not line up. UK reviews on the slatted Garden Vida ask for a proper spanner, and leftover screws show up on the cross-style bench. Do not trust a no-assembly technical row when the bullets and the reviews describe flat-pack work, as they do on the VEVOR.
Should I cover it or leave it out?
Leave it out if water can run off and the timber has the right finish, and cover it only with something that can breathe. A tight cover on a damp bench traps moisture against the seat. Hardwood wash and softwood preservative steps belong on the care page. This checklist only asks you to know which timber you bought before you choose a cover.
Is FSC printed on these seven listings?
No. None of the seven kept ASINs prints an FSC or PEFC code. GOV.UK timber rules put furniture in scope for the operator who first places it on the Great Britain market, which is not the same as a code printed for you on amazon.co.uk. Ask the seller in writing if chain-of-custody labelling matters before you treat the bench as certified.
