Extending table for a small patio

Updated: 22 October 2026

Your patio is a strip beside the house, and a fixed 180 cm table would block the door. An extending table for a small patio works only if the closed top is the weekday object and the open top still leaves a way past. Peter F. compared the listings. This is not a guide for eight or ten. Measurements are on the [extending garden table buying guide](/hub/garden-furniture/extendable-garden-table/sub/extendable-garden-table-buying-guide). Who each listing is for is on [best extending garden table](/hub/garden-furniture/extendable-garden-table/sub/extendable-garden-table-best). How the leaf moves is on [how to extend a garden table](/hub/garden-furniture/extendable-garden-table/sub/extendable-garden-table-how-to-extend). What small means in centimetres

Small, on this page, means a closed top near 80 cm, or a camping top that is 94 cm by 70 cm and then leaves in a bag. Lafuma's UK guide shows a 68 cm by 64 cm folding balcony table for two. That is not an extender, so it is not a recommendation here. Outsunny is the 80 cm case: 80 cm closed, 160 cm open, £165.99. JUMMICO's bullet says 81.5 cm square, at £155.90. TIMBER RIDGE closes at 94 cm by 70 cm, at £62.99, and leaves in a bag. Measure the closed square against the door swing first.

The length you grow into when people come

Outsunny's open length is 160 cm, and the rows agree. On an 80 cm width that is a tight six if you use Lafuma's lower rule of thumb of about 55 cm of edge per person, and it is not the 180 cm by 90 cm an indoor guide suggests for six in comfort. JUMMICO's bullet says 163 cm open and the size row says 160 cm. Quote both. Do not average them. TIMBER RIDGE's bullets stop at 130 cm, and one UK review measured about 120 cm. If you need 160 cm, that extra length will disappoint you.

Moving it, and the gap you need to open it

Outsunny weighs 21 kg, does not fold, and has no carry bag. UK reviews say one person can reposition it. Two people are recommended for assembly. JUMMICO's attribute says 16.5 kg and a bullet says about 13.7 kg, so do not promise yourself 13.7 kg. TIMBER RIDGE is 8.4 kg with a bag, the one you can put in the boot when the balcony must be clear. None of the three files states how much space you need to pull the top apart. A table hard against a railing may close to 80 cm and then have nowhere to grow. No parasol hole is listed.

Which listing fits a short patio

Choose the Outsunny when the closed 80 cm square fits the weekday patio, you can live with 160 cm and a lost path when people come, and you will count parts before you build. The load is 50 kg. The top is plastic with a wood effect, not teak. Choose the JUMMICO only if you accept 160 cm and 163 cm as a range and no stated load, at £155.90. Choose the TIMBER RIDGE when the table must leave in a bag. You do not get 160 cm. Skip all three when a parasol must pass through the top.

Common questions

Will an 80 cm square extending table sit on a balcony?
It can, if the closed square clears the door and the railing, and if you have checked the open length against the same space. Outsunny is 80 cm by 80 cm closed and 160 cm open, at 75 cm high and 21 kg. JUMMICO's closed size is 81.5 cm in a bullet and 80 cm on the size row. A 160 cm top on a narrow balcony will block the walkway for as long as it stays open. Measure the closed top first, then imagine the open one.
Can one person move an extending patio table?
UK reviews of the Outsunny say one person can reposition the 21 kg table. That is not the same as carrying it down stairs, and assembly still recommends two people. JUMMICO's lightweight bullet sits beside 16.5 kg and about 13.7 kg, so treat the mass as uncertain. TIMBER RIDGE at 8.4 kg with a carry bag is the one designed to be lifted into a boot. If you cannot shift the closed table away from the door, the open length will not save the weekday layout.
Do I need space beside the table to open it?
Yes, and none of the three listings states how many centimetres that gap is, so you should not invent one. A sliding top needs room to walk the halves apart. A concertina needs room for the slats to travel. If the closed table is already touching a wall or a railing, try the motion before you commit, with chairs moved clear. A table that only fits when it is closed is a bistro table, not an extender.
Will six people fit once a small patio table is open?
They might sit, and they will be close. Outsunny's title says six, unextended seating says four, and the top is 160 cm by 80 cm. Lafuma's 55–60 cm per person can be read as three places along 160 cm, on a width tighter than an indoor 90 cm comfort figure. JUMMICO's rows say 4–6, 10, and unextended 6, which is not one answer. Plan four in comfort and six as a squeeze. The chairs are not in the box.
Does the listing include chairs?
No. The included-components rows for Outsunny, JUMMICO and TIMBER RIDGE are the table, and in the TIMBER RIDGE bullets a carry bag. Your chairs add width the 80 cm top does not include, and they need somewhere to go when the table is closed against the wall. No parasol hole is listed, so a sunny balcony still needs shade that does not rely on a pole through the top.
