Which motion you actually have

A butterfly leaf lives under the top and unfolds once the halves are apart. A loose leaf is a separate board you fetch from a cupboard. Sliding rails have no board. A concertina, or shutter top, grows by opening slats, and there is nothing hidden underneath to flip up. Indoor notes that assume a stored leaf are not the sheet for an aluminium patio table. Outsunny states one leaf and mechanical expansion. JUMMICO's bullets describe interlinked rails and a pinch-safety feature. TIMBER RIDGE is the concertina UK reviews call a shutter top. If you cannot tell which motion you have, stop and read the listing before you pull.

Opening a butterfly or a sliding top

Clear plates, mats and the parasol base off the top before anyone pulls. Two people stand on opposite sides, release any clip or clasp you can see, and pull evenly so the gap opens in a straight line. On a butterfly leaf, unfold the stored boards and push the halves home until the top feels level, with no step at the join. Look for a cap or a lock before you force the halves together. If nothing moves, do not lean harder and do not oil the runners. Brush what you can see, then leave it if it still binds. A bent rail is a workshop job.

A concertina camping table is a different motion

The TIMBER RIDGE TR 7014 does not hide a butterfly leaf. UK reviews describe a shutter-style aluminium top, legs that fold out, and a carry bag. The bullets say the length runs from 94 cm to 130 cm at 70 cm deep. The extended-length row says 129 cm, and one UK review measured about 120 cm. You are opening slats and setting feet, not unfolding a stored board. One UK reviewer feared the mechanism would jam if the table were left outside. If an edge arrives sharp, stop using that top. None of these listings shows a test report to BS EN 581-1:2017, whose buyer-facing point is rounded or protected edges.

Level the feet, count the parts, and know when to stop

TIMBER RIDGE states four feet, each with 3 cm of adjustment, for uneven grass, gravel or sand. Do not claim a larger range than the listing prints. Outsunny mentions non-slip feet, but the attributes do not state a centimetre range, so do not invent one. If a foot or a roller is missing, do not drill a substitute into the frame. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 22, you have 30 days to reject faulty goods after delivery. You can also cancel an online order within 14 days when it is not faulty. Stop when a rail is bent or an edge is sharp. Cutting the legs, which one JUMMICO buyer did, is not a listed adjustment.

Common questions

Do I need two people to extend a garden table?
For a butterfly or sliding dining top, yes. Two people pull evenly so the gap stays square. A camping concertina such as the TIMBER RIDGE is a different motion: UK reviews describe legs that fold out, and the listing weight is 8.4 kg, so one person often manages the bag. Outsunny weighs 21 kg and recommends two people for assembly. If you are unsure which mechanism you have, fetch a second person before you pull.
What should I do if the extending table will not move?
Stop. Look for a clip, a clasp or an umbrella cap, clear crumbs and grit from the track you can see, and try one even pull with two people. Do not oil the runners. An indoor dining guide says oil gums them up, and that warning is the safer line here. If the top still binds, the next step is the seller or a workshop, not more force.
How do I level an extending table on patio slabs?
Use the adjustment the listing actually states. On the TIMBER RIDGE that is 3 cm on each of four feet. Set the table where it will stand, then turn the feet until it stops rocking. Do not expect that 3 cm to fix a patio that falls by more than the feet can absorb. Outsunny mentions non-slip feet without a centimetre figure in the attributes we captured. Do not pack random offcuts under one leg and call that level.
Can I oil the runners to make a garden table extend?
Do not oil them as a first response. An indoor dining article says oil gums runners. This page does not transfer a dry lubricant onto the Outsunny leaf or the JUMMICO rails as a proven fix, because those manuals were not in the files. Brush out grit, pull evenly, and stop if it binds. Teak oil is about timber colour, and it does not belong on an aluminium runner.
What do I do if a foot is missing from the box?
Photograph the shortage, keep the rest of the parts together, and use the 30-day right to reject faulty goods under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 22, which starts after delivery. Do not drill a new hole or screw a homemade foot into the leg. In the Outsunny UK sample, one buyer was told the manufacturer had no spare foot. An online order can also be cancelled within 14 days even when the goods are not faulty.
