How to anchor a swing set

Updated: 22 October 2026

How to anchor a swing set is the job that finishes before the first push. A line that says ground stakes are included does not say whether those pegs are for soil or for concrete, and it does not size the arc. Most of the eight amazon.co.uk listings in our [double swing comparison](/hub/garden-furniture/double-swing) are freestanding children's frames. The Furinno is the odd one out: its chains are hangers, not ground anchors. This page is that stability check, not a ranking. Peter F. read the UK listings on 21 October 2026. Fit the stakes before the first swing

Reviews of the GYMAX frame and both Zero Gravity nests say the legs rock, or the set walks, before the anchors are in. Short pegs and sandbags appear in those comments. That is a use report, not a design to copy. The Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011 expect activity-toy instructions to cover anchorages and a suitable surface. RoSPA's home-play sheet asks you to secure the set to the ground. GYMAX, TP, HLC, Plum, and both Zero Gravity sets state stakes or pegs. Outsunny, at £46.99, does not. The Furinno, at £145.83, has chains and no legs. With the pegs fitted as the sheet describes, push the top bar sideways. If a foot lifts, the anchors are not doing the job yet. Sandbags can hold a foot for an adult test. They are a poor substitute once two children are swinging.

Soil pegs and concrete pegs are different

Plum's listing says the anchors are for concreting, and UK reviews say those pegs fail in grass. The boat is about 155 × 165 × 184 cm, with 100 kg combined. A concrete peg will pull in a soft lawn. GYMAX, TP, HLC, and the Zero Gravity nests also list stakes, without that concreting sentence. Some reviews still say the supplied pegs are short, which is a different fault. None of these listings states a hole depth, so this page will not invent one. If the frame still walks after the correct pegs are home, stop and change the fixing. Concreting the feet is permanent, and only sensible where the instructions allow a footing and you know what is under the turf. The load lines sit on the double garden swing buying guide.

Clearance under and around the seat

RoSPA asks for at least 200 mm under the seat at rest, with closed S-hooks and capped tube ends. That 200 mm is a ground gap, not a 200 m exclusion zone. Plum asks for a 2 m safety perimeter. Its steel is about 1.55 m by 1.65 m, so the clear lawn is larger than the footprint. HLC is about 3.12 m wide and 1.85 m deep before the arc. A Zero Gravity nest sits nearer 180–190 cm wide. Measure the frame, then add the swing and any perimeter that listing prints. A patio slab is a poor crash mat. Seller guidance says not to site a swing on concrete or asphalt as the fall surface, and grass packs down with use. That is not a British Standard for these frames. An open S-hook or a missing cap is a returns question before anyone swings. Sharing a nest or using two belts is on swing for two children.

When you stop

Before you drive anything longer than the supplied peg, know you are clear of electric cable, water, gas, and drains. If you cannot say what is under the lawn, stop. A cracked bar, a failed weld, or a bent leg means you retire the frame. Tape does not restore a split tube. The Furinno is the case you do not peg: it hangs from a beam. A joist, a truss, or a porch roof you have not opened is a structural check, on porch swing vs kids swing set. A school, nursery, or pub is outside this domestic set. If the push test is quiet, the peg type matches the surface, the seat clears the ground, and nothing under the lawn is a guess, choose on load and age. If any of those is open, the set stays empty.

Common questions

Do I have to fit the stakes before children use it?
Yes, if the listing includes them and the instructions say to use them. Reviews of the GYMAX and Zero Gravity sets describe rocking before the anchors were fitted. A push test with sandbags is not a substitute once children are on the seat. Outsunny does not state stakes, and the Furinno is not a ground-peg product.
Are Plum's pegs for grass?
The listing text says the anchors are for concreting, and UK reviews say they perform poorly in grass. That warning belongs to Plum's boat, about 155 × 165 × 184 cm, not automatically to every other frame. GYMAX, TP, HLC, and both Zero Gravity nests include stakes without that concreting sentence.
What if the frame still walks after the pegs are in?
Stop use and change the fixing. A short peg, or the wrong type for the soil, will pull even when it looks seated. Concreting the feet is permanent, and only sensible where the instructions allow a footing and you know what is under the turf. If the bar has cracked, get help rather than adding more weight.
How much clear space do I need?
Start with the frame, then add the arc and any perimeter the brand prints. Plum asks for 2 m around a 155 × 165 cm footprint. HLC is about 3.12 m wide before the seats move. RoSPA's 200 mm figure is the gap under the seat, not a 200 m zone around the garden.
Can I stand the frame on a patio slab?
Only if the anchors and the fall surface still make sense. A slab is a bad crash mat. Seller guidance says not to use concrete or asphalt under the arc, and grass packs down with use. Plum's pegs are a concrete footing, not permission to swing over paving.
How do I know the seat is high enough off the ground?
Measure at rest. RoSPA's home-play sheet asks for at least 200 mm under the seat, plus closed S-hooks and capped tubes. Meeting that gap does not mean this listing was inspected. If the seat is lower, or a hook arrives open, sort that before the first swing.
When should I stop and get help with concrete or buried pipes?
Stop before a long anchor or a footing if you cannot say what is under the lawn. Cables, pipes, and drains are not visible from the grass. Stop as well if a bar, weld, or leg has cracked, or if you are fixing a porch roof rather than a lawn peg. A school or nursery is outside this domestic set.
