Wood or plastic beer table: which one you can leave out

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are choosing a wood or plastic beer table for a wet October and a hot July afternoon. Lacquered softwood looks like a pub bench and wants a dry shed. Plastic or HDPE wipes clean, can smell when it is new, and a dark top can heat up in the sun. The [beer tent table comparison](/hub/garden-furniture/beer-tent-table) only kept plastic sets, about 180 cm. The [buying guide](/hub/garden-furniture/beer-tent-table/sub/beer-tent-table-buying-guide) is the order of the other checks. Peter F. read amazon.co.uk listings and UK seller notes on 21 October 2026 and did not run a weathering test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Two families, not two winners

Pub-style sets are lacquered softwood, often fir or hemlock, on a steel trestle. The top is often about 50 cm wide. Marquee-style sets are plastic or HDPE, often about 74–76 cm wide, and the kept listings are about 180 cm. A 50 cm wood top holds glasses. A 75 cm plastic top takes a serving dish as well. Ondis24 does not state a material. VOUNOT's material-type field says high-density polyethylene and its top-material field says metal. Relaxdays states plastic with a decorative wood look and a steel frame. None of them is the lacquered fir set beside them on amazon.co.uk. If the pub look is why you searched, this shortlist is the wrong family. The best beer tent table page says who each plastic row is for.

Lacquered wood is for the party, then the shed

e-woodproducts says their beer tables are lacquered, not pressure-treated, and that lacquer cracks if the set stays out all season. Store it dry. Pressure treatment is a picnic-table product, not this one. Lacquer is a film. Sanding through it is a repair, not routine care. Dancover says their folding pine and steel sets are not permanently designed to be outdoors. On a different 167 cm set they print 200 kg, evenly distributed, and say that set is not for permanent outdoor use. That figure is theirs. It is not a load for Ondis24 or Relaxdays, and it is not a weathering certificate.

Plastic wipes clean and still has limits

Plastic and HDPE are the wipe-clean side. VOUNOT's care line says wipe with a dry cloth, and the bullets call the top weatherproof and UV-resistant. Relaxdays calls the top easy-care. That is useful after a spilled drink. It is not a claim that the set can live outside through a British winter. BS EN 581-3:2017 sets mechanical safety requirements for outdoor tables and does not test weathering. None of the three listings cites it. Ondis24 reviews, which are not located in the United Kingdom, describe a strong plastic smell for days or weeks, and a dark surface that gets hot in direct sun. A white top and a black top are not the same seat at 3 pm. Feel the bench before children sit in full sun. HDPE is not wood look. Relaxdays' wood look is a printed grain, not timber. Ondis24's material field is blank. Do not fill that blank from another shop's page.

What the three listings actually say

Ondis24 states no material and no load. If you need the word plastic, or HDPE, before you pay £127.93, this row does not give it to you. VOUNOT states HDPE in one field and metal in another, at £119.99. The UK reviews are mostly cracks and smashed corners. Relaxdays states plastic, a wood-look finish, and a steel frame, at £170.90. Do not use the year-round bullet as a leave-out promise. The folding guide is where you dry the set before it goes in the shed. Choose wood when you want the pub look and you will store it dry. Choose plastic when you want to wipe spills, and when you accept smell and heat on a dark bench. If you will not store either, you are shopping a picnic table meant to stay out, not a folding beer tent set.

Common questions

Will a wooden beer table survive a British winter outside?
Treat lacquered softwood as a party set you store dry. e-woodproducts says lacquer is not pressure treatment and that it cracks if the set stays out all season. Dancover says their folding pine sets are not permanently designed to be outdoors. A pressure-treated picnic table is a different product. None of the three kept listings is that wood set.
Does plastic splinter?
A sound plastic or HDPE top does not splinter the way a failed lacquer or a split board can. That is the practical reason people choose it after a bare-wood bench. It can still crack in transit, which is what VOUNOT's UK reviews describe, and a crack is a sharp edge of a different kind. Plastic is not maintenance-free for ever.
Will a black plastic bench burn my legs?
Ondis24 reviews describe a dark top that gets hot in direct sun. Those reviews are not located in the United Kingdom, and they match the general point that a dark plastic surface heats in sun and cools in shade. A white top is a different colour, not a measured cooler seat. Feel the bench before anyone sits in full sun, especially children.
Which one smells when new?
Ondis24 review bodies describe a strong plastic smell for days or weeks, fading outdoors. The listing itself does not state a material, so the smell is a review theme, not a specification. VOUNOT and Relaxdays do not carry that theme in the review notes used here. Airing a new plastic set outside is a reasonable step. It is not a cure for a cracked board.
Is HDPE the same as wood look?
No. High-density polyethylene is a material name, and it is what VOUNOT's material-type field says. Wood look on Relaxdays is a decorative finish on a plastic top. Ondis24 does not state either phrase. A metal top field on the VOUNOT listing contradicts the HDPE line, so you should not merge them into one material.
Which is heavier?
The three kept item weights are 26.4 kg, 26.5 kg, and 27.4 kg. A wood seller's table at about 15 kg is their table, not these sets. Item weight is not the carton and not a legal lift limit. Compare the listing in front of you, not a slogan that plastic is always light.
