Beer table for a garden party: how many people fit

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have a number of guests, a lawn, and a beer table for a garden party that the advert says will seat eight or ten. An 180 cm set does not become ten adults because a bullet says so. This page is the headcount and the space for a home party. It is not the fold sequence and not a wood-versus-plastic essay. The [beer tent table comparison](/hub/garden-furniture/beer-tent-table) holds three plastic listings, all about 180 cm. Peter F. set the shop rules side by side on 21 October 2026. Every headcount below is that shop's rule, not a British Standard. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Start from the guest list, not the bullet

Write the number of adults who need a seat at the same table. A folding beer set is a perch, not a dining chair with a back, and none of the three listings states a backrest. A retailer rule of thumb from e-woodproducts is about 55 cm of bench per adult. On one bench of 180 cm that is about three adults, so about six at the set, and only if the benches are actually 180 cm. RUKU's chart puts 1.80 m at four to six people, and 2.20 m at six to eight. Adverts on 180 cm plastic sets say up to eight. Those claims do not average. The buying guide is where you check that the listing is a set at all.

What 180 cm is for

Treat about 180 cm as roughly four to six adults, and move to a longer set when you want eight at one table. Deuba treats 170–180 cm as the smaller gathering and about 220 cm as the larger party. The bench has to be the length you are dividing. Relaxdays states benches of 42.5 x 180 x 25 cm, so the sum can apply. Ondis24 does not state a bench length. VOUNOT's bench bullet is 80 cm, which is about one adult at 55 cm. One UK reviewer of that set sat six and mentioned eight only with stools at the ends. The best beer tent table page says who should skip that conflict.

Leave room to stand up

You need space to swing a leg out and to walk behind a seated person. RUKU says leave at least 50 cm between the long sides of neighbouring sets. e-woodproducts wants at least 1.5 m between rows. Expo Direct uses 1.2 m aisles in a commercial beer garden. Those are seller planning rules, not Building Regulations. Soft ground does not replace the lock. The folding guide owns that step. Pavement furniture in England can need a pavement licence. A private enclosed garden does not. This page does not invent the rule for Scotland or Northern Ireland.

A long meal is a different job

Relaxdays states a bench 25 cm deep and 42.5 cm high. That is a perch for an hour, not an armchair for a long meal, and none of the three listings states a backrest. If everyone must stay seated, use chairs or a set that states a back. Relaxdays' table is about 74 cm wide and Ondis24 states 75 cm. A pub wood top is often about 50 cm. Do not leave a lacquered wood set in the rain because the party ran late, and do not treat a plastic year-round bullet as a weathering test. If the benches are stated at 180 cm and the list is six or fewer, one set can be enough. If the list is eight at one table, shop the 220 cm shelf. If the benches are unstated or listed at 80 cm, do not plan six people on them.

Common questions

How many adults fit on an 180 cm set?
Use about four to six, which is RUKU's chart for 1.80 m. e-woodproducts' 55 cm rule of thumb gives about three adults per 180 cm bench, so about six at the set, if the benches are that long. Adverts that say up to eight, or up to ten, are that advert. Do not average the claims. Ondis24 does not state a bench length, and VOUNOT's bench bullet is 80 cm.
When is 220 cm the better party size?
When you want about eight adults at one table. e-woodproducts' sum puts eight on 220 cm at 55 cm each, and RUKU puts 2.20 m at six to eight. Deuba treats about 220 cm as the larger gathering. That length is outside the three kept listings. A 220 cm fir set is also a storage decision, not only a headcount.
How much lawn does one set need?
More than the top. RUKU says at least 50 cm between the long sides of neighbouring sets. e-woodproducts wants at least 1.5 m between rows. Expo Direct uses 1.2 m aisles in a commercial garden. Pick a gap you can walk, and measure your lawn. Those figures are seller planning rules, not Building Regulations.
Can I put two sets end to end?
You can place two 180 cm sets in a line, and you do not get one continuous 360 cm table. Legs, ends, and the gap between the sets use length, and you still need a path along the side. If the aim is eight people at one surface, a 220 cm set is the cleaner shop. Two short VOUNOT benches do not become one long bench by being pushed together.
Are the benches comfortable for a long meal?
Relaxdays states a bench 25 cm deep and 42.5 cm high, with no backrest on any of the three listings. That suits a barbecue hour better than a long sit-down meal. People stand between courses. If everyone must stay seated, use chairs or a set that states a back. A child's comment in one non-UK review is not a comfort test.
Do I need a pavement licence for a garden party at home?
Not for a private enclosed garden. Expo Direct notes that pavement furniture in England can need a pavement licence. That is the pavement, not the back lawn. This page does not state a separate rule for Scotland or Northern Ireland. A public event is a different question, and a domestic folding set is not specified seating for one.
