How to set up a garden water fountain

Updated: 22 October 2026

The box is open, the stone-effect shell is on the patio, and the pump is still in a bag. A self-contained garden water fountain does not need a water main. The failures in the first hour are a base that is not level, a pump switched on in air, and a wall lion whose instructions never mention a bracket. Which model to buy is on the [stone fountain comparison](/hub/garden-decor/stone-fountain). Peter F. used Primrose, GardenSite, NICEIC and the UK texts in this set. Put it on a base you can level

Primrose treats a self-contained feature as a fill-and-plug job. You still need a firm pad: slabs, a plinth or a deck that does not rock. Set a spirit level on the rim both ways before you add water. GardenSite’s tier sheet says to level every stage, or the sheet leaves on one lip. A UK text on the Teamson plug-in lion says it must sit on flat ground or the water runs to one side. Check the level again once the bowls are full.

Fill first, then switch on

Fill every bowl before you connect power. The pump has to be under water. GardenSite’s pump sheet treats dry running as warranty damage. A loaded pump is a wet hum, and a dry one is a sharp buzz. Switch off, top up, and only then try again. No listing states litres per hour. Fill until the pump is covered and a sheet can form, then stop before the rim. Whether it will run all evening is on the solar or mains garden fountain page.

Plug, RCD and drip loop

Use the transformer in the box. Both Bumilgar models state a 3 m cord. The Teamson lion and the stacked bowls do not state a lead length. If the lead stops short, add an outdoor-rated extension with the joint off the ground. Do not cut the plug off. The socket should already be on a 30 mA RCD. A drip loop is a sag below the plug so rain drips off before the pins. Keep the transformer out of the bowl. Plugging in is not notifiable work under Approved Document P. A new circuit, a buried cable or a consumer-unit change is when you call an electrician.

Wall lions and a missing bracket

The Gardenwize is 4.75 kg and solar. The Teamson lion is 6.6 kg and plug-in. UK texts call the Teamson easy, and the file still does not describe the fixings. A UK text on the Gardenwize says there is no mount method and no bracket. Do not invent a rawlplug size. Geoffs’ note on courtyard wall fountains still rules out a fence panel. Use solid masonry you can identify, and stop if the wall is single-skin, unknown or listed. Which lion to buy is on the best stone effect garden fountain page.

The first week

Top up after the first afternoon. A UK text on the Zedazoom describes a leak that needed a daily top-up. That is a fault, not a normal thirst. The stacked Teamson has no drain. A UK text says the maker suggested a siphon or a bucket. Do not tip the stack. The solar Teamson is about 7 kg, and one UK text says to secure it in wind. Drain, pump and cover sit on the winterise a garden fountain page.

Common questions

Does a self-contained fountain need plumbing?
No. Primrose and the usual UK shop guidance for this type say you add water and use the power the product was sold with. You are not cutting into a supply pipe or burying a reservoir. You do need a level base and, on a mains model, a socket you can reach without cutting the plug off. A new outdoor socket is an electrician’s job, not a length of hose.
When can I switch the pump on?
When the pump is under water and every bowl that should hold water is filled. Dry running can wreck the pump, and GardenSite’s pump sheet treats that as a warranty problem, not a trial. If you hear a sharp buzz, switch off, add water and restart. There is no litres-per-hour figure on these listings to aim at. Cover the pump, let a sheet form, and keep the rim from overflowing onto the socket side.
What is a drip loop?
A drip loop is a downward sag in the flex before the plug, lower than the socket, so water running along the cable drips off outdoors instead of into the pins. Make it on every mains fountain in this set, including the Bumilgar models with a stated 3 m transformer cord. It does not replace a 30 mA RCD, and it does not make a short lead longer. Keep the transformer itself out of the bowl.
How do I hang a lion head if there is no bracket?
You do not invent one. A UK text on the Gardenwize says the instructions never explain the mounting and that no bracket is supplied. The Teamson lion’s fixings are also undescribed, even where UK texts call the job easy. Fix only to solid masonry you can identify, and stop if the wall is single-skin, unknown or listed. A 4.75 kg dry mask is not a reason to guess a drill size.
The lead is too short. Can I cut the plug off?
No. Use an outdoor-rated extension, with the joint off the ground, or move the fountain closer to the socket you already have. Cutting the moulded plug off a transformer lead is how a low-voltage set becomes an unsafe repair. Only the Bumilgar listings state a 3 m cord. One UK text on the 130 cm cascade still needed an extension past about one metre. A new socket in the wall is an electrician’s job.
