Solar wall lights in winter in the UK

Updated: 22 October 2026

You fitted a solar wall light in August, and the first grey week in December it is dark by the bins. That is a usual UK winter, not proof that solar wall lights never work. They can still come on if the panel gets direct sun, and none of the twelve listings in our [solar wall light outdoor comparison](/hub/garden-decor/solar-wall-light-outdoor) is promised to run all night after cloud. Peter F. did not time these fittings through a winter. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

They can work, and they will not match a summer night

Which? found that winter runtime varies, and that test is not these ASINs. A solar wall light in a UK winter can come on, and it will not copy an August evening. Shorter days and a lower sun mean less charge. A south-facing porch in lunchtime sun can still give a useful hour or two. A claim of up to 12 hours describes a good charging day, not a week of Midlands cloud. A drive that must stay bright until midnight was the wrong job for solar.

South, shade, and a panel stuck under the soffit

Which? says these lights need direct sun for part of the day. In December the sun stays on the south side of the house, so a north fence can sit in shadow all day. A panel under the soffit sees the gutter, not the sky. None of these twelve is a remote-panel kit. A sconce drilled in September stays put unless you fill the holes and refit it.

Spend the charge in bursts, or top up the USB-C light

An all-evening mode spends the cell as soon as it is dark, so SOTTLOT, TECKNET, Lavenham, LETMY, and YUNYODA go dark first after a short day. A motion head, such as the vighep six-pack, spends that charge in bursts. It is still affected by winter. The only USB-C backup stated here is the vighep up-and-down sconce at £29.99, not the six-pack. The bullets claim up to 205 lumens. Others call it dim after a USB charge and say it is not properly solar.

When to stop expecting solar to cover December

A drive that must be bright every December evening is a mains fitting under BS 7671, not a bigger lumen number. If you do not need the glow until March, store the head dry. A swollen cell is electrical waste. GOV.UK says to tape loose lithium terminals and keep batteries out of household rubbish. The checks are in the buying guide. Picks are on the best solar wall light outdoor page. Screws are in how to install solar wall lights.

Common questions

Do solar wall lights work in a UK winter?
They can come on if the panel gets direct sun for part of the day. Which? found that winter runtime varies on the solar garden lights they kept outside, and that test is not these twelve listings, so their times are not ours. None of these amazon.co.uk captures is a promise of all-night light after a grey week. A south-facing wall with a clear lunchtime sun is the case where winter use is realistic. A shaded alley is not.
Why does mine last all evening in August and go out early in December?
August gives the panel a long day and a high sun. December gives it a short day and a low sun, and the house throws a longer shadow across the fitting. The cell simply stores less, so an all-evening mode runs out sooner. The light has not changed its job. If you need the same number of hours, you need more charge, a mode that spends less, or a mains light. A bigger lumen claim on the listing does not add December sun.
Will a north-facing fence charge a wall light in winter?
Poorly, and it will not match an all-night claim. The December sun stays on the south side of a typical UK house, so a north fence can sit in shade for the whole short day. The panel is fixed to the light on these listings. You cannot move the cell to a sunny bed and leave the lamp where it is. If that fence is non-negotiable, the vighep sconce is the only one here that states a USB-C top-up, and even that is a claim of modest output.
Does cloud still charge the panel at all?
Some charge can occur in bright cloud, and it is not the direct sun Which? asks for. Heavy grey days are why lights that were fine on a clear Saturday are flat by Wednesday. Do not treat another brand’s “10 to 25 percent” line as a figure for these ASINs. If your wall only sees cloud and the shadow of the roof, expect a short evening or none, and do not keep buying a higher lumen number to fix the sky.
Which light in this set can I top up from USB-C when the week is grey?
Only the vighep dusk-to-dawn sconce, listed at £29.99 with 4.2 from 47 ratings, states a USB-C backup. The bullets claim about 205 lumens and an 1800 mAh cell. Reviewers use the cable when the panel has not kept up, and others call the result dim and not properly solar. The vighep six-pack is a different light and does not state USB-C. No other listing in this comparison states that backup, and we are not quoting a USB charge time.
