How to install solar wall lights without a cable

Updated: 22 October 2026

You want a solar wall light on a porch or a fence, and you do not have an outdoor socket. That is a reasonable job if the panel can see the sun and you know what is inside the wall. It fails on the first night when the panel sits under a soffit or a hidden switch is left off. This is how to install solar wall lights from the twelve listings in our [solar wall light outdoor comparison](/hub/garden-decor/solar-wall-light-outdoor). Which model to buy is on the [best solar wall light outdoor](/hub/garden-decor/solar-wall-light-outdoor/sub/solar-wall-light-outdoor-best) page. Put the panel in the sun before you care about the glow

Which? says solar garden lights need direct sun for part of the day. A south, south-east, or south-west face, clear of the house, is the pattern another brand prints. Use it as a direction, not as a hole chart. A north fence and a panel under the soffit will not match an all-night claim. None of these twelve is a remote-panel kit. Choose the sunny face first. The stated USB-C exception is the vighep sconce, and a grey week is covered on the solar wall lights in winter page.

Two screws, and the point where you stop drilling

These lights are not wired in. A new cable or outdoor socket goes to a registered electrician under BS 7671. Do not copy a 6 mm drill size from another brand’s sheet. Use the holes in the box you bought. SOTTLOT’s reviews describe two holes and a back plate. One UK buyer taped YUNYODA to stone. ZCXLIGHT’s printed size does not match a 340 g pack, so do not drill for a fitting more than a metre long.

The hidden switch and the first night

The failure in this set is a hidden switch left off. Other brands’ sheets disagree on whether the first charge wants the switch off or on. Follow the sheet in your box. Find the switch before you hang the light. A street lamp can hold a dusk sensor off. That is not a flat battery. If the light flashes once and dies, the cell is the suspect.

When this is no longer a two-screw job

Stop for a new cable, a new outdoor socket, or a lighting circuit. That is a registered electrician’s work under BS 7671. Stop if you cannot tell what is inside the wall, or if the building is listed. Stop if the cell is swollen, cracked, or hot. Tape loose lithium terminals and use a battery recycling route, as GOV.UK describes. A light that is not of satisfactory quality has a 30-day right to reject under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. What to check before you order is in the buying guide.

Common questions

Do I need an electrician to fit a solar wall light?
Not for an unwired fitting on two screws, if you know the wall is clear and the building is not listed. You do need a registered electrician for a new cable, an outdoor socket, or a lighting circuit, under BS 7671. NICEIC’s garden guidance is about that wired work. A solar head with no flex is not a reason to ignore a cable you are about to add beside it.
Where should the panel face in the UK?
Give it direct sun for part of the day, which in practice means a south, south-east, or south-west outlook, clear of buildings, trees, fences, and sheds. That direction comes from another brand’s wall-light sheet, so use it as a placement pattern and take the hole positions from your own box. An integrated panel has to live on the same wall as the glow.
Can I put it on a north-facing fence?
You can fix the screws there, and you should not expect the all-night claim. A north fence in the UK misses the winter sun, and the panel cannot be moved to a south bed while the lamp stays put. If that fence is the only place the light is useful, look at the one listing that states a USB-C backup, and read the winter page before you treat a dim evening as a broken bracket.
What do I do before I drill?
Choose the sunny face of the wall, then use the template or the hole marks in the box you bought. Do not copy a 6 mm drill size or a mounting height from a different manual. Check you are not drilling into a cable, a pipe, or a flue. If you cannot tell, or the building is listed, stop before the masonry is touched. A tape fixing, where the listing offers it, avoids the hole on stone.
Why does a new solar wall light stay dark on the first night?
The usual miss in this set is a hidden switch left off, or a panel that never saw the sun because it faces a soffit or a north fence. Lavenham’s page says there is no switch, and buyers who could not find a control reported lights that never came on. A street lamp can also hold a dusk sensor asleep. A flat cell after one flash is a charge problem, not proof the screws are wrong.
