Solar fountain or mains

Updated: 22 October 2026

You want water at 9pm in November, or a bird bath with no cable, and the listings all say solar as if that were one thing. Solar fountain or mains is a choice about the hour you need the spray, and about whether a battery is actually printed. Panel-only solar stops when the light drops. A cloudy-day title is not a milliamp-hour figure. The [fountain comparison](/hub/garden-decor/fountain) holds the nine amazon.co.uk rows. Which model fits a room or a bath is on the [best fountain](/hub/garden-decor/fountain/sub/fountain-best) page. Peter F. read the listings captured on 20 October 2026. Four power methods, not two

Panel-only solar has no battery in the bullets: AISITIN B08S2R6S91 at about 1.5 W, and both SZMP 3.5 W discs. They stop when the sun does. A review that says battery does not print a cell. Yzert states 2000 mAh and 4 to 6 hours after a full charge. AISITIN B083BRWQQY states 1500 mAh and 2.0 to 2.5 hours at full power. Those are the only milliamp-hour lines. Do not paste a shop’s two-to-four hours after sunset onto them. The panel still has to charge in the sun. USB is Creative Touch, about 1.5 m. Mains is Valiant’s UK 3-pin, BTGGG’s unnamed outlet, and Teamson’s 7 W adapter. A plug is the same at 9pm in November as at noon in June.

What the listing prints about cloud and night

Yzert’s title says it works on a cloudy day. The bullet still says direct sun is usual, with 4 to 6 hours after a full charge, and it does not finish a night-hours figure. At 3.9 from 710, one UK text says it fails on cloud and a June text got about three hours once shade arrived. Night running in a review is not a printed duration. The 1500 mAh AISITIN caps full power at 2.0 to 2.5 hours. UK texts call that reserve short or absent, and the title’s 6.5 W disagrees with a 1.4W model field. The panel-only discs stop when the sun leaves. The only wattage you can cost is the Teamson’s 7 W. First-hour fill is on how to set up a fountain.

What 7 watts costs, and what solar does not

Ofgem’s price cap for 1 October to 31 December 2026, Direct Debit, England, Scotland and Wales, is 26.32 pence per kilowatt-hour. The standing charge is 54.83 pence a day, and the fountain does not cause it. Northern Ireland and a fixed tariff sit outside this average. Electricity in that window is quoted with no VAT. Seven watts for eight hours a day is 20.44 kilowatt-hours a year. At 26.32 pence that is about £5.38. Continuous running is about £16. The listing does not split lamp watts from pump watts. Solar adds nothing to the unit charge while the panel supplies it, and it adds no spray when the light and any printed charge are gone. Other wattages here are missing or they clash, so they are not costed.

The plug and the lid

Valiant states a UK 3-pin and a UKCA cable. BTGGG says a standard outlet, and one UK text says that plug gets hot and has no fuse. Creative Touch stays on USB. Teamson’s 200 cm adapter will not sit under a closed outdoor socket lid. Do not cut the cable or prop the lid open. A new outdoor circuit is notifiable under Part P. An existing RCD socket is not that notification. Unplug before your hands go in the water. A solar puck still will not run through a British evening unless a printed cell has charge. Bowl size stays on the fountain buying guide.

Common questions

Will panel-only solar run under cloud or after dark?
Not as a promise. The £8.59 AISITIN and both SZMP discs do not state a battery, and UK texts say they stop in shade, under cloud, or when the sun goes. A weaker spray on a dull day, in one blue-SZMP text, is still sunlight on the panel. It is not stored power for the evening. If you need water after dark, you need a plug or a cell the listing actually prints.
What battery hours are printed on Yzert and on the AISITIN with 1500 mAh?
Yzert prints 2000 mAh and 4 to 6 hours after a full charge. AISITIN B083BRWQQY prints 1500 mAh and a maximum of 2.0 to 2.5 hours at full power. Those are the bullets. They are not a shop’s generic two-to-four hours after sunset, and they are not a guarantee that every UK buyer saw the full window. One Yzert text reported about three hours once shade arrived.
What does the 7 W Teamson cost at the October 2026 cap?
About £5.38 a year at eight hours a day, and about £16 if it ran continuously. The rate is 26.32 pence per kilowatt-hour, Direct Debit, England, Scotland and Wales, 1 October to 31 December 2026. The 54.83 pence daily standing charge is not part of that fountain sum. No other wattage on this shelf is printed clearly enough to multiply.
Does a USB tabletop count as mains?
It counts as a plug-in room fountain, not as solar and not as a UK 3-pin. Creative Touch’s lead is about 1.5 m of USB. It runs when the port is powered and it stops when you unplug it. There is no battery in the listing. Several UK texts say a 3-pin plug was not supplied. You do not put it on an outdoor RCD socket and call it a garden pump.
Will a transformer plug close an outdoor socket lid?
Not the Teamson’s, according to a UK review. The adapter is a block, the cable is 200 cm, and the lid will not shut on it. Do not cut the lead and do not leave the cover wedged open. If you need a new outdoor point that accepts that plug safely, that is an electrician, not a fountain setting.
