How to set up a fountain

Updated: 22 October 2026

The box is open, the bowl looks ready, and the pump is still dry on the table. How to set up a fountain is the first hour: water over the pump, a spray the bowl can hold, then power that matches the plug you actually have. The [fountain comparison](/hub/garden-decor/fountain) is where the nine listings differ. If you have not chosen a role yet, the checks are on the [fountain buying guide](/hub/garden-decor/fountain/sub/fountain-buying-guide). These steps follow the amazon.co.uk bullets and the saved UK texts. They are not a wiring guide. Peter F. read the listings captured on 20 October 2026. Same first rule for every pump

Do not connect power until the pump is under water. Teamson says the pump should not operate without water, and it names no cut-out. Creative Touch says keep the pump submerged. Valiant’s order is connect the pump, add water, then mains. Sun does not replace water over a solar impeller. Yzert claims a stop when water is short or the filter is blocked. AISITIN B083BRWQQY claims a stop when it leaves the water. The other discs, the tabletops, and the Teamson do not state that sensor. Unplug before your hands go in. Outdoor mains wants 30 mA RCD protection. What a battery does after dusk is on solar fountain or mains.

Tabletop and the freestanding piece

Seat the ball before you judge the sound. UK texts describe a Valiant base that bounced until the sphere was seated, a BTGGG ball that rattled until it was pushed down, and a Creative Touch plate that split after first use. More water does not fix a loose joint. None of the three tabletops prints litres. On BTGGG, overfill or underfill upsets the pump, and the size lines disagree, 20.5 cm against 18.5 cm. Cover the pump and stop before the rim overflows. If the Creative Touch ball is missing, do not run it. Teamson is the same rule at 9 litres: tight joints under the water line, and no power while the bowl is empty.

Nozzle and rods in a bath you own

Put the lowest nozzle on first. UK texts say a tall jet and a breeze empty a small bath. If the shortest head still soaks the rim, that disc is the wrong pump. The cheap discs have no flow dial. Fit the four pipes or rods before you blame the wind. They keep the disc off the rim. They do not catch a jet that is already too high. One flower-panel box arrived without the rods, and the bath emptied. That pump is aimed at a 20 inch bath. Put the disc in sunlit water with the impeller covered, and rinse the sponge rather than running it dry.

Plug in only after the water is in

Power comes last, in the form the listing named. Valiant states a UK 3-pin. BTGGG does not name BS 1363, and one UK text says the plug gets hot and has no fuse. If that is what you see, take it back. Creative Touch is USB, about 1.5 m, with no 3-pin in the box. Teamson’s 200 cm lead has a transformer plug that will not sit under a closed outdoor lid. Do not wedge the lid or cut the cable. An existing socket is not notifiable work. A new outdoor circuit is Part P, and Section 702 is where a new supply near water stops being a setup. Stop if the cable is damaged or the pump smells of burning. Draining for winter is on fountain winter storage.

Common questions

Do I plug in before the reservoir is full?
No. Cover the pump, let the return fall back into the bowl, and only then connect power. Teamson says the pump should not operate without water. Creative Touch says keep it submerged. Valiant’s own order is connect the pump, add water, then mains. A quick test on a dry unit is how these pumps fail.
How full is full enough for a tabletop?
Full enough that the pump stays under water and the rim does not overflow. None of the three tabletops prints a litre capacity. BTGGG is the one a UK text says is upset by overfill or underfill, and its two size lines disagree, so you watch the water, not a millimetre mark you invent. Valiant’s regulator comes after it is running.
Which nozzle should I try first in a bird bath?
The lowest pattern in the set. UK texts say a tall jet and a breeze empty a small bath in minutes. If the shortest head still soaks the paving, that disc is the wrong pump for that bowl. You do not get a flow dial on the floating discs in this file.
What are the four rods or pipes for?
They limit drift so the disc stays off the rim and the spray has a chance of landing in the bath. SZMP, the cheap AISITIN, and Yzert include them for that reason. They do not replace a low nozzle. One flower-panel box was missing the rods, and the bath emptied. Check the bag before you fill.
What do I do if the listing claims a low-water shut-off?
Treat it as a claim on that listing only. Yzert claims a shut-off when water is short or the filter is blocked. AISITIN B083BRWQQY claims a stop when the pump leaves the water. The other discs and the ornaments do not state a cut-out. You still top the bowl up, and you still unplug before you reach in.
When do I stop and call an electrician?
When you need a new outdoor socket or a new circuit, or when a mains pump or cable is damaged. That new work is notifiable under Part P, and supplies near water fall under Section 702. Plugging a sound fountain into a socket that already exists is not that visit. Do not shorten a cable to force a fit.
